Purdue’s Academic Success Building in Indianapolis reached its highest construction point on Sept. 17, 2026, when crews placed the final steel beam during a topping-out ceremony. Purdue reported on Sept. 23 that the project was more than 60% complete and scheduled for completion in fall 2027. The available official reports do not verify what work was underway on Wednesday, Sept. 16, so that date should not be confused with the documented topping-out.
What happened at the construction milestone?
Purdue’s Sept. 23, 2026 report says the final steel beam was placed on Thursday, Sept. 17, marking the building’s highest construction point. The university’s event listing also identifies Sept. 17 as the date of its Academic Success Building Beam Signing and describes the final-beam hoisting as a topping-out ceremony.
The event listing gives 550 W. North St. as the ceremony address. Separately, Indiana’s July 2024 project description places the development near West Street and Michigan Street. Those are distinct source descriptions; the event address should not be treated as a verified description of the construction frontage along West Michigan Street.
How far along is the project, and when is it expected to finish?
As of Purdue’s Sept. 23 report, construction was more than 60% complete, with completion scheduled for fall 2027. Purdue Polytechnic Institute described the building as a 16-story, $187 million project in an Aug. 17, 2026 article; those figures are attributed to that article.

Published area and schedule figures vary by source. The Indiana Commission for Higher Education’s July 2024 project description gives an approximate planned scope of 252,000 gross square feet. Purdue Admissions lists 248,000 square feet and May 2027 completion, while Purdue News’ later Sept. 23, 2026 report gives fall 2027. The later report is the most recent schedule statement among these sources; the differing figures do not establish the final as-built area or a revised date explanation.
What will the Academic Success Building include?
Purdue describes the facility as a mixed-use part of its Indianapolis campus, with classrooms, labs, dining and student housing. The state’s July 2024 project description gives early planned figures of nearly 500 beds and dining capacity of approximately 400 seats, and says the facility is intended for students, business partners and the local community. These are planning-document figures, not newly verified as-built measurements.

Purdue frames the project as part of the university’s urban campus expansion. In the Sept. 23 report, Jay Wasson, vice president for physical facilities and chief public safety officer, said: “We aren’t pouring concrete just to add square footage to a campus map.”
