What was PunkinBot?
PunkinBot was a CNC pumpkin-carving project built by Brian, Alex, and Eric VanDiepenbos, a father-and-sons team from Goshen, Indiana. Make: introduced it as “The CNC Pumpkin Carving Machine,” while EDN described it as a pumpkin-carving robot. The family adapted an EMSL Egg-Bot concept for the larger task of carving pumpkins. Make:’s 2012 account showed the first cut by the early machine at Maker Faire Detroit; EDN’s 2012 report covers the improved v2.0.

How did PunkinBot v2.0 carve a pumpkin?
Workholding and movement
The pumpkin sat on a central spike. A stepper motor for each axis movement rotated the pumpkin, moved the arm up or down, and advanced or retracted the carving tool. The arrangement combined rotation of the workpiece with a moving arm that positioned the tool against it.
Design-to-machine workflow
The reported workflow converted a digital design into code, then imported that code into Mach 3 to control motor movement. This is the control setup described for PunkinBot v2.0 in EDN’s 2012 article; the coverage is not an official, current build guide.

Surface carving, not through-cutting
A Dremel tool shaved the pumpkin’s top layer rather than cutting all the way through its shell. The family believed leaving the inner shell intact would make the jack-o’-lantern brighter because light would not disperse through a full cut. That is the family’s explanation as reported by EDN, not a cited test result.
What could it carve, and how long did it take?
EDN reported that v2.0 could carve traditional faces, skulls, bats, wolves, and Frankenstein designs. The same 2012 article gave an end-to-end process time of 15 minutes. Treat that as a historical report about the project—not an independently verified benchmark or a current performance specification.

How did the project develop?
From a first prototype to v2.0
EDN reported that the first prototype, v1.0, took about two months to build and used mostly PVC pipe and wood. After showing it at Detroit Maker Faire, the family developed v2.0 with improved materials, a simpler frame, and a more user-friendly design. Make: described the early machine as wobbly. Alex VanDiepenbos said of that version: “While the machine was a bit wobbly and tempermental, it proved our concept could work.”

Seasonal sales and plans for other fruit
EDN said the family used v2.0 to sell carved pumpkins at Pumpkin Fantasyland in Ligonier, Indiana, during October. Alex also said they hoped to adapt the machine for round fruit such as watermelon and cantaloupe; the report records that hope, not evidence of later production or sales.

Is PunkinBot available to buy or build today?
The 2012 coverage documents a maker project, not an ongoing commercial machine. It does not establish present-day sales, maintenance or support, or authoritative plans and instructions for building PunkinBot. The reported use of a Dremel identifies a rotary tool as part of the historical design, but the coverage does not specify a model, bit, speed, or compatibility requirements. It therefore does not establish which current rotary tool, if any, would fit a recreation.

Andrew Gutierrez and Chris Dalke built a separate pumpkin-carving CNC project in October 2021. Their GitHub repository describes a Grbl-based machine using an Arduino Uno and rotary table, with SolidWorks CAD files and Python scripts that generate G-code from an input image. The authors characterize their build as a rushed one-off that is far from reproducible.
