Verdict: The Prusa MK4S remains an excellent open-frame FDM printer for dependable PLA, PETG, TPU, and workshop-part production. It delivers strong first-layer automation, very good print quality, useful speed improvements over the MK4, offline operation, and unusually strong repairability. It is not the universal best choice in 2026: its 250 × 210 × 220 mm build volume, moving-bed design, premium price, and lack of an integrated heated chamber make the newer enclosed Prusa CORE One/Core One+ more attractive for engineering materials and larger prototypes.

For construction professionals, educators, and makers, the MK4S is best understood as a reliable prototyping tool—not a replacement for industrial fabrication. It is particularly useful for scale models, site-layout mockups, jigs, fixtures, brackets, cable-routing aids, and custom workshop organizers.

What is the Prusa MK4S?

The MK4S is an evolutionary update to the Prusa MK4. It is a Cartesian, moving-bed “bedslinger” with a direct-drive Nextruder, a removable magnetic PEI spring-steel sheet, automatic load-cell-based first-layer calibration, and mesh bed leveling.

Original Prusa MK4S Fully Assembled High-Speed FDM Desktop 3D Printer | with Input Shaping, Professional Print Quality, Open-Source Upgradeable Design for Makers & Pros
  • [HIGH-SPEED FDM PRINTING PERFORMANCE] Delivers fast and reliable desktop 3D printing with excellent surface quality and dimensional accuracy. Print Size 9.84 x 8.3 x 8.6 in.
  • [INPUT SHAPING FOR CLEAN RESULTS] Advanced motion compensation reduces ringing and vibrations for sharper edges at higher speeds.
  • [PROFESSIONAL-GRADE RELIABILITY] Designed for consistent day-to-day operation in workshops, studios, and production environments.
  • [OPEN-SOURCE & UPGRADEABLE SYSTEM] Built on Prusa’s open ecosystem with long-term firmware updates and hardware upgrade paths.
  • [IDEAL FOR PRODUCTION & PROTOTYPING] Suitable for both functional parts and detailed prototypes requiring dependable output.

The major changes are a front-mounted turbine with 360-degree part cooling and a supplied high-flow Prusa CHT brass nozzle. The cooling system is designed to improve bridges, overhangs, layer cooling, and the removal of supports from flexible materials. Prusa advertises support-free overhangs of up to 75 degrees, but that is dependent on material, geometry, orientation, and slicer profile.

The MK4S also includes Ethernet, Wi-Fi, NFC-assisted setup, and Prusa Connect. It can still operate entirely offline through USB, which is useful in workshops, schools, businesses, and sites where cloud-connected equipment is undesirable.

Design, build quality, and setup

Make’s review tested a fully assembled printer. Its setup consisted largely of attaching the spool holder. The package included tools, lubricant, an alcohol wipe, an acupuncture needle, a smooth PEI sheet, a handbook, and a 1 kg spool of Prusament PLA. Read that as an assembled-printer experience, not a description of the kit.

The MK4S kit requires substantial mechanical assembly, although Prusa supplies detailed instructions and pre-cut cables and says no soldering is required. The kit can be a valuable STEM or maker project because assembling the machine also teaches how its motion system, belts, extruder, and wiring fit together. For a business that needs immediate production, the assembled version reduces setup risk and downtime.

The moving bed needs a stable surface with enough depth and clearance for its travel. That motion can transmit vibration to a lightweight table and is less suitable for very tall, narrow objects than a CoreXY printer. The open frame, however, makes the nozzle, sheet, and mechanical components easy to access during maintenance or a print intervention.

Print quality: excellent, but the MK4S is an evolution

Make found that MK4S prints were often difficult to distinguish from MK4 output at first glance. The differences appeared in the details: improved bridging, overhang behavior, surface finish, and the ability to sustain higher flow in suitable profiles.

PLA was the strongest part of the review. Functional parts and toys showed clean surfaces and reliable geometry, making the printer well suited to construction mockups, tool holders, alignment guides, and low-load prototypes. PETG also produced visually excellent prints, although some larger examples delaminated on textured and satin sheets. The reviewer improved those specific results with approximately 0.1–0.15 mm lower baby-stepping. That is a test observation, not a universal setting; changing first-layer height without understanding the symptom can create poor adhesion or a crushed first layer.

TPU and other flexible materials benefit from the direct-drive extruder and improved cooling, but success still depends on filament condition, print speed, retraction settings, and part geometry. A printer being mechanically capable of a material does not mean every flexible formulation will print identically.

How fast is the MK4S in real use?

Make measured print-time improvements of approximately 5–15% on the models and profiles it compared with the original MK4. It also reported draft-mode volumetric flow around 28–30 mm³/s for functional parts. Those are useful hands-on results, not a universal speed guarantee.

The high-flow CHT nozzle melts filament through multiple channels, and Make described a 50% to more-than-100% flow-rate improvement over the standard MK4 nozzle depending on material and nozzle diameter. Higher volumetric flow does not translate directly into the same percentage reduction in elapsed time. Acceleration, travel moves, perimeter speeds, cooling, small features, and the number of layers can remain the limiting factors.

In practical terms, the MK4S is faster where a model can exploit additional flow without sacrificing cooling or surface quality. A large, simple functional part may benefit more than a small detailed model. Glossy, highly controlled surfaces often require slower profiles than draft printing.

Reliability and day-to-day operation

The MK4S’s reliability comes from several systems working together:

  • Load-cell sensing for automatic first-layer calibration.
  • Automatic mesh bed leveling.
  • Filament sensing and recovery features.
  • Power Panic through the Delta power supply and control electronics.
  • Fan monitoring and fault detection.
  • Removable spring-steel sheets that simplify part removal.
  • Extensive documentation, replacement parts, and a mature user community.

Prusa says fewer than 1% of its printers require hands-on maintenance. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified failure-rate study. The more defensible conclusion is that the MK4S is designed to reduce routine intervention and make intervention practical when it is needed.

It is not maintenance-free. Keep the sheet clean, inspect the nozzle, remove accumulated debris, lubricate the motion system as directed, keep filament dry when the material requires it, and replace worn consumables. Repairability means you can service the machine; it does not mean parts never wear out.

Noise and workshop suitability

Make described the MK4S as quiet enough for a shared workspace. There was no independent decibel measurement in the supplied testing, so noise should not be treated as a fixed specification. Fan speed, infill changes, acceleration, table resonance, and enclosure placement all affect the result.

It can suit an office-adjacent workshop better than many older printers, but a printer running overnight beside desks or meeting areas may still be noticeable. A rigid, heavy stand and vibration-damping feet can help with transmitted vibration.

Materials and enclosure requirements

Material Base MK4S suitability Practical guidance
PLA Excellent No enclosure normally needed
PETG Excellent with normal tuning An enclosure is usually optional; control drafts on large parts
TPU Good Use suitable profiles and dry filament
ABS/ASA Possible Avoid drafts; an enclosure is strongly advisable for large parts
Nylon/PA Possible with preparation Dry the filament and use an enclosure for more consistent results
Carbon- or glass-filled filament Material-dependent Use an abrasion-resistant nozzle; an enclosure may help depending on the polymer

Prusa lists PLA, PETG, flexible materials, PVA, PC, PP, CPE, and PVB among compatible materials. ABS, ASA, HIPS, and PA are listed for use with the Original Prusa Enclosure and filtration add-on. “Compatible” means the printer can be configured to extrude the material; it does not guarantee easy, dimensionally stable large parts on an open frame.

The MK4S has no built-in heated chamber. That is unimportant for ordinary PLA and often acceptable for PETG, but it matters for large ABS or ASA parts, tall nylon parts, and components where drafts can cause warping or layer separation. An enclosure adds expense, footprint, heat, and possible ventilation or filtration requirements. If you need an enclosure from the beginning, compare the complete MK4S-plus-enclosure cost with the CORE One/Core One+.

Software, connectivity, and privacy

PrusaSlicer supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, and the MK4S works with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Prusa Connect, and the Prusa mobile app. NFC can transfer Wi-Fi credentials during setup. Prusa Connect can schedule prints, send G-code, monitor jobs, and receive files from Printables.

Use the connection method that fits the workshop:

  • USB: maximum independence and no cloud requirement.
  • Ethernet: reliable for a fixed installation.
  • Wi-Fi and Prusa Connect: convenient for queues and multiple printers.

Make found Prusa Connect simpler for its tested functions than OctoPrint or Mainsail, but less feature-rich for users accustomed to those platforms. Remote visual monitoring also requires an additional camera solution; the MK4S does not provide the same integrated camera experience as some newer printers.

MK4S versus MK4

Change What it means
360-degree cooling Better support for overhangs, bridges, and difficult geometries
High-flow CHT nozzle Higher potential volumetric throughput
Firmware and profiles Refined speed-to-quality behavior
Wi-Fi/NFC workflow Easier network setup and remote management
Core platform Still fundamentally the same open bedslinger architecture

For an existing MK4 owner, the MK4S is a meaningful refinement rather than a generational revolution. Upgrade value depends on how often you print demanding overhangs, how much faster your jobs need to be, and the current upgrade price. If your MK4 already produces the quality and reliability you need, replacing it solely for visible PLA quality may be difficult to justify.

Is the MK4S outdated beside the CORE One?

No, but the comparison changes the buying decision. Prusa lists the MK4S with a 250 × 210 × 220 mm volume and no integrated chamber. The CORE One is a newer CoreXY design with a 250 × 220 × 270 mm volume and an integrated chamber listed at up to 55°C. Prusa’s MK4S comparison information lists the optional enclosure at up to 45°C.

MK4S CORE One
Kinematics Cartesian bedslinger CoreXY
Build volume 250 × 210 × 220 mm 250 × 220 × 270 mm
Chamber Optional enclosure Integrated enclosed design
Best fit Open, accessible general-purpose printing Enclosed printing and chamber-benefiting materials

Choose the CORE One/Core One+ when you are buying new and need an enclosure, additional height, or newer CoreXY mechanics. Choose the MK4S when open access, lower entry cost, simple PLA/PETG production, offline use, and existing MK4-compatible knowledge matter more. The MK4S is not obsolete; it is simply more specialized in a lineup with a stronger enclosed option.

Should you add MMU3?

The MMU3 enables up to five colors or materials through one nozzle. It can produce multicolor work with less waste than some purge-heavy systems, but it is not a zero-tuning accessory. Installation, filament routing, buffer space, calibration, and feeding all add complexity and consume workshop space.

Tom’s Hardware reported roughly 54 seconds per color swap, low waste, but also feeding errors, manual loading, and a need for fresh, dry filament. Its testing and review notes also identify TPU as unsuitable for the MMU3 workflow. The high-flow brass CHT nozzle supplied with the MK4S is not recommended for MMU3, according to Prusa’s nozzle documentation. Plan around the recommended standard-nozzle configuration rather than assuming the included nozzle works for every setup.

Buy MMU3 when five-color printing is a specific requirement and you are comfortable maintaining a more involved filament path. Skip it if you want instant multicolor printing, routinely use TPU, or mostly print single-color construction parts.

Total ownership cost

The printer price is only the starting point. Budget for:

  • Kit or assembled-printer premium.
  • Shipping, tax, and regional pricing differences.
  • Extra PEI sheets and replacement nozzles.
  • Filament, including a dryer for moisture-sensitive materials.
  • An enclosure when printing chamber-sensitive polymers.
  • MMU3 and its required space if multicolor is essential.
  • An additional camera for remote visual monitoring.
  • Routine cleaning, lubrication, and replacement parts.

Prusa advertises an owner program with 10% off 30 selected filaments per year and 10% off the next five assembled MK4S units after buying the first MK4S at full price. Treat this as a vendor program with its own terms, not as a universal lifetime discount.

Alternatives worth considering

Prusa CORE One/Core One+

The strongest in-family alternative is the CORE One/Core One+. It makes more sense for enclosed printing, engineering materials, extra build height, and users who would otherwise purchase an MK4S plus enclosure.

Bambu Lab A1 Combo

A lower-cost multicolor printer such as the Bambu Lab A1 Combo is attractive when price and straightforward multicolor entry matter most. Tom’s Hardware’s comparison found the Prusa system stronger in maintenance, reliability, and color-change efficiency, while the A1 Combo offered a substantially lower-cost route. That is one publication’s testing, not a universal ranking; choose based on whether serviceability and the Prusa workflow justify the premium.

Prusa XL

The Prusa XL is the more appropriate Prusa option when large-format printing or independent-toolhead multicolor work matters. It is a different class of machine and should not be selected merely as an MK4S substitute.

Final recommendation

Buy the Prusa MK4S if you want a mature, dependable, repairable printer for mainly PLA, PETG, TPU, and ordinary workshop prototypes—and you value offline operation, documentation, and long-term parts availability more than headline speed or the lowest price.

Buy the kit when assembly is part of the maker or educational experience. Buy assembled when uptime and convenience matter more than the savings and learning value.

Choose the CORE One/Core One+ for chamber-dependent materials, taller parts, or a newer enclosed CoreXY platform. Choose a cheaper multicolor printer when the purchase budget and plug-and-play color are more important than Prusa’s repairable design and lower-waste—but more involved—MMU3 workflow.
