Proven Industries sued YouTuber Trevor McNally after he posted videos showing a bypass of the company’s trailer hitch latch-pin lock. The company’s complaint accused him of wrongdoing, but those accusations were not court findings. Reporting says Proven voluntarily dismissed the case in July 2025; the available record does not establish a trial verdict or a judicial finding that the lock was defective.
What prompted the lawsuit
Futurism reported that Proven Industries first released a promotional video challenging claims that its latch-pin lock could be broken or defeated. McNally then posted videos demonstrating a way to bypass the lock. The dispute was about both the demonstration and how the video characterized what it showed.
Futurism described the product as a $130 trailer hitch lock in its October 29, 2025 coverage. That is a price cited in 2025 reporting, not a verified current price. Read Futurism’s report.
What Proven alleged—and what that does not prove
Proven sued McNally in federal court, and its complaint asserted claims including copyright infringement, tortious interference, civil conspiracy and defamation by implication. The complaint is the company’s account of the dispute: an allegation in a filing is not proof that the alleged conduct occurred or that a court agreed with the company.

The court reportedly questioned the tortious-interference theory and encouraged the parties to resolve their dispute. Futurism relayed a courtroom remark attributed to the judge through Ars Technica: “This is a capitalist market and people say what they say. As long as it’s not false, they say what they say.” That is a reported hearing remark, not a written ruling establishing the outcome of the case. Futurism’s account.
How the case ended
The case was *Proven Industries, Inc. v. McNally*, Middle District of Florida case 8:25-cv-01119. A docket index lists May 1, 2025, as the filing date. Copies of the complaint and a later filing are dated June 2 and June 6, 2025, respectively. Those filings document the parties’ submissions, not findings of fact. Legal-news coverage reports that the court denied preliminary injunctive relief and that Proven voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit on July 7, 2025. That is a reported procedural outcome, not a judgment after trial. The sources available here do not establish a final merits ruling against McNally, nor do they show that a court certified a product-wide conclusion about the lock’s security. McNally’s video demonstrated a bypass of the particular Proven latch-pin lock at issue. That matters to anyone evaluating the product, but the lawsuit’s dismissal does not by itself prove that every version of the lock is insecure, that every lock can be bypassed in the same way, or that the court made a technical finding about the product. The legal dispute and an independent assessment of a lock’s security are different questions.

For construction businesses and trailer owners, the practical point is to treat a lock as one part of a broader theft-prevention plan rather than assume a product name or lawsuit outcome establishes its security. Consider the trailer, hitch, storage location and exposure to theft when choosing security measures; this case alone cannot substitute for product-specific testing or advice.
