A projector hush box can reduce the fan and mechanical noise reaching your seats, but it must be designed around the projector’s airflow—not sealed like a soundproof cabinet. Before building, check the exact projector manual for vent clearances, operating limits, mounting orientation and whether an enclosure is permitted. If you cannot provide a safe, monitored route for cooling air, choose a quieter operating mode, reposition the projector or consult an enclosure specialist instead.
What a projector hush box does—and what it cannot do
A hush box is an enclosure intended to reduce noise from a projector while still supplying the airflow the machine needs. It can limit direct sound reaching the seating area, absorb sound reflected inside the enclosure and isolate some fan vibration. It cannot make a projector silent: fans and moving air still make noise, and restricted cooling can make the projector’s own fans run faster.

Four different measures contribute to the result:
- Absorption: Suitable lining reduces sound reflections inside the box. Thin acoustic foam is not, by itself, soundproofing.
- Blocking: Dense panels, well-fitted doors and sealed joints limit sound passing through the enclosure.
- Path control: Offset or baffled air passages reduce direct sound leakage while allowing ventilation.
- Vibration isolation: Resilient mounts and flexible connections limit fan vibration travelling through the box and ceiling.
Vent openings and seams are both potential sound leaks and essential parts of the cooling system. Acoustic treatment must not obstruct a projector vent or restrict required airflow.
Decide whether a hush box is appropriate
A box is most useful when the projector is close to the audience, its fan is intrusive during quiet material, and there is a practical way to exhaust warm air safely. It is a poor DIY choice if the manual prohibits enclosed installation, the projector sits in a hot ceiling void, vents or filters would be blocked, or you cannot inspect and service the machine.

- Consider simpler fixes first: Try the projector’s low-power or quiet mode if available, reposition it, or move equipment to a remote location. These options avoid adding an enclosure that requires its own cooling and maintenance.
- Consider professional design: An expensive projector, permanent installation, commercial venue or difficult duct route can justify a professionally specified enclosure or design service.
- Skip the box: If a safe exhaust route and temperature-monitoring plan are not feasible, do not trade projector cooling for a small reduction in audible noise.
Start with the exact projector manual
Find the manual for the exact model and regional variant before drawing the box. Manufacturers warn that a closed or poorly ventilated installation can trap hot exhaust and cause overheating, reduced brightness or protective shutdown. Epson says not to place a projector where air cannot circulate, including in a box, unless the manufacturer is consulted; its setup guidance also shows that required clearances vary by model. Epson projector setup and installation guidance and the BenQ MH856UST+ manual illustrate why model-specific instructions matter.
Confirm these points in the manual or with the manufacturer:
- Locations of every intake, exhaust and air filter, and the clearance required around each vent
- Permitted mounting orientation and any restrictions on ceiling or inverted mounting
- Published operating-temperature range and any altitude or high-temperature mode guidance
- Whether an enclosure is allowed, and any ventilation or monitoring requirements
- Filter-cleaning intervals and access needed for lamp, laser, lens or other service
- Lens position, zoom, focus and lens-shift range relevant to the enclosure opening
Do not apply a generic clearance such as “three inches on every side.” Projectors may have bottom intakes, side exhausts or asymmetric cooling paths. For example, Epson’s documentation for particular models shows different clearances, while a specific BenQ manual gives its own installation warnings; none of those figures is a universal hush-box specification. See the Epson EH-QB1000B/EH-QB1000W guide, the Epson LightScene EV-100/105 guide, and the BenQ TH683 manual for model-specific examples—not values to copy to another projector.
Map the airflow before sizing the box
Mark where cool air enters and where heated air leaves the projector. Do not assume that every vent has the same function or that airflow direction is obvious from the case shape. A historic CRT-projector hush-box guide makes the same practical point: airflow must be checked before deciding whether a system should push or pull air. CurtPalme’s airflow discussion is useful as a design reference, not as a current manufacturer specification.
- With the projector operating normally and uncovered, identify each intake and exhaust from the manual.
- Confirm airflow at the openings with a narrow tissue strip held nearby or a non-contact temperature probe. Do not insert anything into a vent.
- Draw the air path in the proposed enclosure, including the projector’s own vent clearances and any separate cooling paths.
- Check that hot exhaust cannot flow straight back into an intake, including when the projector is ceiling-mounted or inverted.
Plan a cool-air intake and a separate warm-air exhaust. An exhaust fan pulling air through the box can be acoustically useful if it can be placed remotely, but neither positive nor negative pressure is automatically right for every projector. The important test is whether the projector receives adequate, cool intake air without its built-in fans fighting excessive restriction.

Fan ratings need context. A free-air CFM figure does not tell you how much air a fan will move through a filter, grille, bends, acoustic baffles and duct. Long or sharply bent duct runs and restrictive filters add resistance. A remote fan can reduce noise near the seats, but poor duct design can undermine cooling. Tempest’s commercial enclosure manual gives model-specific duct arrangements and airflow requirements; its figures apply to those systems, not to a DIY box. Tempest Cyclone enclosure manual
Size around vents, lens movement and service access
Do not size the shell by the projector’s outside dimensions alone. Draw the projector to scale and add the model’s required clearance at each vent, the full lens movement envelope, lining thickness, fan and duct fittings, cable paths and room to remove the projector. Leave access for filter cleaning, controls and indicator lights, and make sure the unit can be removed without dismantling its mount.
A simple top, side and front drawing helps expose conflicts before construction. Mark the lens opening, mounting points, intake and exhaust routes, access-panel location and temperature-sensor positions. Older DIY builds illustrate framed panels, hinged access and remote exhaust, but their dimensions and cooling results are specific to their projectors. CurtPalme build, page 1 and page 2.
Choose materials for both acoustics and construction
Wood or MDF is straightforward to cut and can provide useful panel mass, but a large ceiling enclosure can become heavy. A lightweight timber or aluminum frame with rigid skins reduces weight, but it still needs stable, non-rattling panels, sealed joints and secure structural support. In either case, account for heat, humidity and the suitability of adhesives and finishes for the location.
Use absorptive lining on surfaces where it will not block airflow or shed material into a projector intake. Suitable options may include enclosed acoustic fiberglass or mineral-wool panels, melamine foam or purpose-made lining rated for the application. Secure or fully enclose fibrous material. Dense panels and sealed doors help block sound; foam primarily absorbs reflections. Keep material clear of vents, filters, fans, lens, hot components and electrical equipment.

Isolate fans with rubber grommets or resilient brackets, and use flexible duct connectors where practical. Rigidly fixing a vibrating fan to the enclosure can transmit its noise into the structure and ceiling. A sealed, removable service panel with a gasket and captive fasteners or draw latches can balance noise control with maintenance access.

Design the projection opening
The lens opening can leak sound and affect the image. An open port is simple and provides direct ventilation, but gives sound and dust an unobstructed path. A short hood or tunnel can reduce stray light and direct sound, but must not clip the beam or reflect light back into the lens. Check the full image at the projector’s intended zoom, focus and lens-shift settings.
An optical-glass window can provide a physical barrier, but ordinary window glass is not automatically suitable. Glass can introduce reflections, ghosting, flare, distortion or image loss, and it must be clean, correctly aligned and suitable for the thermal conditions. Test the projected image across the full lens movement range and at full brightness. Acoustic Frontiers lists projection-port glass as part of its custom design service, but its inclusion does not make an arbitrary pane appropriate. Acoustic Frontiers hush-box design
Build and commission the enclosure in stages
- Record an open-air baseline. Note the room temperature, projector mode, noise at the seating position, temperature near intake and exhaust, and whether the internal fan changes speed as the projector warms. Let it run until readings stabilize.
- Make a drawing and mock-up. Verify lens alignment, focus and zoom access, cable routing, maintenance access and mounting geometry with a temporary cardboard or foam-board model. Do not operate the projector for an extended period in a sealed temporary mock-up.
- Build a rigid shell. Use stable panels, sealed joints, a removable or hinged service panel and broad, smooth airflow passages. Keep loose material and hardware away from vents.
- Add ventilation and acoustic treatment. Install the intake, exhaust, fan and ducts according to the mapped airflow. Line non-vent surfaces without obstructing cooling paths; isolate the fan from the structure.
- Add monitoring and control. Place a sensor near the projector’s hot exhaust region and, where useful, another near the intake. Use an external thermostat or controller so ventilation cannot inadvertently remain off while the projector is running.
- Mount and secure the assembly. Support the projector and enclosure from structural framing with hardware rated for their combined load. Do not rely on drywall alone; use a secondary safety restraint and maintain access for inspection.
Keep cables slack enough for service, provide strain relief, avoid sharp bends in HDMI or fiber-optic cable, and maintain space around the projector’s power supply. Keep combustible acoustic material away from hot parts. Use appropriate listed electrical components and safe access to mains power. Do not modify internal projector fan wiring as a default DIY control method; that is model-dependent electrical work with potential safety and warranty consequences.
Ceiling mounting deserves particular care: the enclosure adds weight and leverage. Epson’s placement guidance calls for a sturdy surface or compatible ceiling mount and warns about placement and ventilation. Epson projector placement guidance

Test temperatures and noise before regular use
A temperature plan is essential; there is no universal safe hush-box temperature. Use the projector’s published operating range and instructions, and distinguish room or intake-air temperature from exhaust and internal temperatures. One Epson guide, for example, specifies a 5–40°C operating range for particular LightScene models; that range is not transferable to other projectors. Epson LightScene EV-100/105 user guide
Compare stable open-air baseline readings with readings in the finished enclosure. Test the warmest normal room conditions and the projector mode that produces the most heat. Monitor whether its own fans ramp up, whether the intake receives cool air and whether exhaust temperature or box temperature continues to rise. A hush-box project documented by CurtPalme used a temperature probe and alarm, but its reported cooling outcome belongs to that installation, not to hush boxes generally. CurtPalme temperature-monitoring example
- Run the projector through normal operation long enough to reach stable temperatures.
- Check that ventilation continues through any required cool-down after shutdown.
- Test the fan controller’s behavior and consider what happens if a fan fails or power to ventilation is interrupted.
- Compare noise at the listening position, including any new duct or panel resonance.
- Keep the projector’s own thermal protections enabled; do not treat the absence of an immediate shutdown as proof of safe operation.
Stop using the enclosure if the projector’s fan becomes louder, temperatures keep climbing, an over-temperature warning appears or the machine shuts down. Let it cool, inspect the vents, filter, fan direction and exhaust path, and consult the model’s manual. Do not respond to a delayed shutdown simply by fitting a faster fan.

The projector overheats
Check for a reversed fan, blocked vent, clogged projector filter, restrictive intake filter, excessive duct resistance, hot-air recirculation or a projector exhaust trapped against a panel. Also consider whether the ceiling void or room is already hot and whether the projector is in a high-power mode. Increase usable intake area, separate hot and cold paths, reduce duct restriction or move the fan farther downstream. If cooling cannot be demonstrated, remove or abandon the enclosure.

A rising internal fan speed can signal that the projector is compensating for heat. Other causes include turbulent airflow at a small opening, fan vibration coupled to the shell, duct resonance or sound reflecting toward the seating area. Check temperatures before trying acoustic changes.

The image shows reflections or ghosting
Inspect the projection window and tunnel for ordinary or poorly aligned glass, dirty surfaces, internal reflections or a port that clips the beam. Test alignment and image quality without the window to isolate the cause.
The projector shuts down after running
A delayed shutdown may reflect thermal protection, obstructed airflow, exhaust recirculation, a blocked filter, a failed fan controller or high room temperature. Stop operation and inspect the cooling path after the projector has cooled; do not bypass the protection circuit.
Dust builds up in the enclosure
Provide a cleanable intake filter only if the fan system can overcome its resistance, and make it accessible for inspection. Epson warns that clogged filters or vents can impair cooling and cause malfunction or fire on the models covered by its guide. Epson EH-QB1000B/EH-QB1000W guide

The enclosure vibrates or feels insecure
Isolate fans and ducts from the shell, tighten rattling panels and check that the enclosure, mount and duct are structurally supported. A ceiling box must be attached to framing or other suitable structure, not just drywall, and should have a secondary restraint.

Quick Recap
Alternatives when a hush box is the wrong fix
- Use a manufacturer-provided quiet or low-power mode if image brightness remains sufficient.
- Reposition the projector or adjust seating so the fan is less intrusive.
- Place the projector in a properly ventilated remote equipment space and route the image signal appropriately.
- Compare the cost and installation effort with a quieter projector rather than adding an unsafe enclosure.
- For a permanent system without a workable DIY exhaust route, get a qualified designer or installer to assess a commercial enclosure.
