Practical 7: Profile and Cross-Sectional Levelling

A practical guide to taking, reducing and plotting levelling observations along an alignment and across its cross-sections.

Profile and cross-sectional levelling turns staff readings along and across a chosen route into a drawing of the ground. The longitudinal profile shows elevation changes along the route; cross-sections show the terrain from side to side. The work proceeds from setting a datum and collecting observations to calculating reduced levels (RLs) and plotting the measured data.

What profile and cross-section levelling shows

Longitudinal profile

A longitudinal profile, also called profile levelling, represents the ground along a selected alignment. It helps show how elevation changes in the direction of the route.

Cross-sections

A cross-section describes the ground across the alignment at selected locations. Together, the profile and cross-sections provide two different views of the terrain for surveying and mapping. The geomatics curriculum covers the importance of both and includes drawing profiles from data: Secondary Education Curriculum 2076.

Establish the datum and understand the levelling terms

Levelling observations need a reference elevation. A datum is the adopted reference for elevations; a benchmark is a point with a known or adopted level. Reduced level (RL) is the elevation assigned to a point relative to that datum. The surveying curriculum also includes height of instrument (HI), backsight (BS), intermediate sight (IS), foresight (FS), and turning point as core levelling terms: Diploma in Geomatics Engineering curriculum.

  • EASY TO SET UP ALIGNMENT: Optical levels provide horizontal and vertical cross-hairs and lines of sight to measure level and alignment and estimate distance. At the same time, the round bubble bottle with 90 degree prism allows for easy and quick setup and alignment.
  • PACKAGE AND WIDE APPLICATIONS: You will get a complete optical leveling kit including 1 x KL-32X Automatic Optical Level,1x 9FT Aluminum Grade Rod — Dual-sided graduations (Inches/Feet) for easy reading,1x Heavy-Duty Aluminum Tripod — Stable support with quick-release clamps,1x Hard Shell Carrying Case — Shockproof protection for easy transport. Ideal for Foundation Leveling,Deck Building,Grading, Construction,Landscaping, Irrigation, and other professional engineering and surveying tasks.
  • BS: a staff reading used to establish the instrument’s height relative to a known RL.
  • IS: a staff reading to a point whose RL is required, without moving the instrument.
  • FS: a reading taken before shifting the instrument, commonly to a turning point or the end of a run.
  • Turning point: a stable point used to transfer the level when the instrument is moved.
  • HI: the elevation of the line of sight, calculated from the known RL and a backsight.

These terms describe the logic of the observations; the exact booking format for a particular class exercise depends on its handout.

Field-to-drawing workflow

  1. Reconnoitre and identify control. Inspect the alignment and locate a usable benchmark or other reference point. Plan where observations are needed along the route and across it. The curriculum includes reconnaissance and monumentation as parts of field procedure.
  2. Check the level. Test the instrument and check for collimation error before taking readings. The curriculum includes level testing and collimation checks, but the cited material does not state a specific tolerance.
  3. Set out and identify observation points. Mark the points needed to represent the route and its cross-sections. Keep station and point identifiers clear so each reading can be connected to its location. The sources do not establish a universal station interval or offset pattern for Practical 7.
  4. Observe and book the staff readings. Take the BS, IS, and FS readings required for the chosen levelling method. Record each value against its point identifier in the field record, preserving the sequence of instrument setups and turning points.
  5. Compute reduced levels. Use the adopted method, such as height of instrument or rise-and-fall, to calculate RLs from the observations. Check the arithmetic and closure as appropriate to the work; do not assume a tolerance not stated by the exercise or its applicable requirements.
  6. Plot the data. Transfer the calculated elevations to the longitudinal profile and cross-section drawing. The plotted result represents the terrain inferred from measured points; it is not a substitute for the original observation record.

From observations to reduced levels

In the height-of-instrument method, the known RL of a benchmark plus the BS gives the HI. Subtract each subsequent IS or FS from that HI to obtain the RL of the corresponding point. When the instrument is moved, a foresight to a turning point gives its RL; a backsight from the new setup establishes the next HI. The rise-and-fall method instead derives elevation changes between successive points. Use the calculation and booking format specified for the class or survey.

Johnson Level & Tool 80-5556 Hand Held Sight Level, Orange, 1 Level
  • HAND-HELD SIGHT LEVEL: This hand leveling tool by Johnson is impeccably designed for surveyors; engineers; grade checkers; grading excavators and land developers to roughly level and estimate the distance during different land surveying or other projects.
  • PRACTICAL DESIGN: The optical tool has a level vial bubble and centering lines that offer accurate results in different leveling or distance estimating tasks.
  • PORTABLE TOOL: has a pocket-sized design; this hand-held sight level offers an instant sight over shorter distances. It can easily be added to your tool kit and carried along to various jobsites.
  • WIDE APPLICATION: This portable sight level is recommended to use for a variety of landscaping; excavating; surveying; framing; surfacing and flooring tasks.
  • PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: The Johnson’s pocket-sized sight level measures 1.25 in. in diameter; 5 in. wide and 1.25 in. high and it weighs around 0.7 lbs.

Keep the field observations, computed levels, and plotted points traceable to one another. A plausible-looking profile does not reveal every booking or arithmetic error, so retain the readings and perform the checks required for the levelling run. The curriculum includes computation, levelling errors, permissible error by order, and adjustment, but the cited passage gives no numerical tolerance for this practical.

Plot the profile and cross-sections

Plot the longitudinal profile using the alignment stations and their computed RLs. Plot each cross-section using its location along the alignment, the lateral position of each observed point, and that point’s RL. Label axes, stations, offsets where applicable, and elevation values clearly so the drawing can be read against the field data.
