For a power outage, choose a rechargeable lantern by the light it can provide at a usable setting, how long it runs there, and whether you can recharge it when the grid is down. The available product data supports a practical comparison of two rechargeable models, not a verified ranking of five. One option offers hand-crank backup; the other has manufacturer-stated runtimes across three brightness modes.
Why a lantern belongs in an outage plan
FEMA advises: “Stay fire safe. Use flashlights, lanterns and other battery-powered lights.” A lantern can illuminate a room or work area without relying on an open flame. It is a lighting tool, not a substitute for other emergency supplies or a way to heat a home. FEMA specifically warns: “Don’t use gas stoves or candles to heat your home.” FEMA’s power outage guidance also recommends gathering supplies for several days, keeping phones and electronics charged, and planning alternative charging methods. Generators, camp stoves, and charcoal grills should be used outdoors at least 20 feet from building openings.
Two rechargeable lanterns with useful published specifications
These products are not a five-model ranking: the available sources do not establish a harmonized shortlist of five rechargeable lanterns with comparable specifications. The figures below also come from different sources. REI provides tested-guide comparison data; Coleman publishes its own product specifications and runtime claims.

How to choose for your household
Match runtime to the brightness you will actually use
Check both high and low settings. High output can help when you need to light a larger area, but it can shorten runtime substantially. Low mode may be more practical for hours of background lighting. For example, REI lists the Goal Zero Lighthouse 600 at an average 2.5 hours on high versus 180 hours on low. Those figures are specific to REI’s guide and the stated modes; they are not a promise that every lantern will achieve similar runtimes.

Consider how you can recharge it without grid power
USB charging is useful when power is available, but a USB-only lantern may be difficult to recharge during an extended outage. REI says the Goal Zero Lighthouse 600 can be revived by hand crank and notes solar-charging options among the products it reviews. A crank or solar option can add redundancy, but neither removes the need to plan: solar charging depends on usable sunlight, and charging conditions affect how useful any backup method will be. Charge and test the lantern before an outage rather than relying on a new device’s out-of-box charge.
Decide whether phone charging is worth using lantern power
A lantern with USB output can provide an emergency top-up for a phone, but that draws from the lantern’s stored energy. Treat the feature as a backup for essential communication, not as free extra capacity. Keep devices charged when power is available and include a separate charging plan for a prolonged outage.

Check placement and portability before buying
Think about where the light will go: a table, a hook, or a central area of a room. Confirm the product’s hanging or standing options, light diffusion, packed size, and weight on its current product information. The cited specifications establish weight for the Goal Zero model only; they do not provide a consistent comparison of hanging ability, light distribution, durability, or water resistance across both lanterns. Avoid treating those qualities as interchangeable without model-specific evidence.

REI’s September 22, 2026 guide names eight tested lanterns, but the list includes a Coleman Powerhouse Dual Fuel Lantern, which is fuel-powered rather than rechargeable electric lighting, as well as string lights and models for which the evidence here does not establish all the same comparison points. A “best five” ranking would therefore imply a like-for-like assessment that the published details do not support. The two rechargeable models above offer concrete data points; check current product specifications and availability before making a purchase.
