But no layout makes toxic plants safe: the hazards differ by species, plant part and exposure route, so treat the garden as a display that requires informed, supervised access—not as a child- or pet-proof space.
Start with the design idea—not a promise of safety
Build the garden around a visual story: a label-first path, a sequence of storytelling zones, or one dramatic focal-point planting. Use contrasts in plant height, foliage shape and seasonal interest to create impact. These are creative approaches, not tested safety controls. The sources do not establish a universal barrier, spacing rule or layout that prevents poisoning.
Make identification part of the design. Give each plant a legible label with both its common and botanical name, and use visible warnings where visitors enter or move through the display. Keep toxic plants intentionally separate from edible crops so the two are not easily confused. These precautions can make risks clearer; they do not remove them.
Understand what “toxic” means before choosing plants
“Some plants can be poisonous if you eat them. Others can hurt you if you get them on your skin,” explains Poison Control. Risk also varies by plant part: some plants are harmful throughout, while in others only particular parts pose a hazard. Possible effects range from mild irritation to severe illness or death. Do not assume every plant, or every part of a named plant, presents the same danger.

Examples named by Poison Control include foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), oleander (Nerium oleander), yew (Taxus), poison hemlock (Conium maculatum), monkshood (Aconitum napellus and other Aconitum species), and lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria majalis). North Carolina Poison Control also lists azalea, castor bean, jimsonweed, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac and water hemlock among outdoor examples. These are illustrations of plants that can present hazards, not a recommended planting palette or an exhaustive list. North Carolina Poison Control explicitly cautions that not every poisonous plant is listed.
Choose a palette with local advice
Before buying or planting anything, ask a reputable local nursery, garden center or botanical garden to confirm the plant’s identity and suitability for your site and climate. A visually compelling plant may not grow well locally, and a general list cannot establish whether a particular species is appropriate around your household’s children or pets. Texas Poison Center Network advises using both common and botanical names and says households with small children or curious pets should consider removing toxic plants.

Compare candidates using questions rather than a supposed danger ranking:
- Visual effect: What height, leaf form or seasonal interest does it contribute?
- Growing suitability: Can a local horticultural expert confirm it suits your region and site?
- Exposure: Is the concern ingestion, skin contact or another route, and which plant parts are hazardous?
- Access: Can visitors reach it, and will access require close supervision?
- Household fit: Are children or curious pets likely to encounter it?
The cited guidance does not provide a complete species-by-species answer for pet safety or a climate-specific planting plan. If those questions cannot be resolved for your household and location, leave the plant out.

Make the layout legible to visitors
Use a label-first path
Place common and botanical names where visitors can read them before approaching a plant. Add a plain-language warning at the garden entrance and near relevant plantings. Avoid relying on a dramatic nickname or an unlabeled visual display as identification.
Create storytelling zones
Organize the display by visual theme—such as foliage shapes, color or seasonal interest—while keeping each plant individually identified. Keep the route away from edible plantings to reduce confusion. These choices help visitors understand what they are seeing; they do not guarantee separation from exposure.

Give the focal point extra context
A striking specimen can anchor the design, but do not let its prominence substitute for a clear label or warning. Plan for supervised access and consider whether displaying that plant is appropriate at all when children or curious pets use the space.

Supervise children in the garden and teach them not to taste or eat plants. Account for curious pets when deciding whether to plant toxic species; guidance from Texas Poison Center Network says households with small children or curious pets should consider removing them. A decorative boundary, label or path is not evidence that an area is safe for unsupervised access.

Handling precautions matter, too. Missouri Poison Center advises long sleeves and gloves when avoiding poison ivy and other skin-irritating plants. Protective gardening gloves can be a useful aid, but clothing and gloves should not be represented as eliminating exposure risk. Do not touch an unknown plant to identify it.
What to do after a possible exposure
If someone may have eaten a plant, do not guess at treatment. Contact a poison-control resource or medical professional for guidance. In the United States, Poison Control offers webPOISONCONTROL and the phone number 1-800-222-1222. If possible, provide the plant’s common and botanical names or other reliable identification when speaking with an expert. Follow professional advice rather than trying a home remedy.
