For a reliable pocket-hole joint, measure the board’s actual thickness, set both the jig guide and bit’s depth collar to the matching setting for your jig, and choose a screw from that model’s chart. Secure the workpiece before drilling and clamp the joint during assembly. These checks help keep the screw path centered and reduce the risk of drilling into the jig or breaking through the workpiece.
Set the jig to the board’s actual thickness
Measure the board that will receive the pocket hole rather than relying on its nominal lumber size. Set the drill guide and step-bit depth collar according to the instructions for your specific jig, then verify that the two settings match. Kreg notes that a mismatch between the guide and collar on certain models can cause the bit to drill into the jig base. Its FAQ addresses guide adjustment for the Pocket-Hole Jig 520 and 720/720PRO: Kreg’s drill-guide adjustment FAQ.
The goal is for the screw to exit close to the center of the drilled workpiece. That is the Kreg K4 manual’s guidance, not a universal setting that overrides another jig’s instructions. Consult the manual for your model whenever its guide, collar, or bit-depth procedure differs. Kreg K4 manual.
Choose a screw for thickness and material
Use the screw-length chart supplied for your jig system. For example, the Kreg K4 chart pairs 3/4-inch stock with a 1-1/4-inch screw. The full K4 reference is below; these are K4 recommendations, not universal pairings for every jig, screw, or joint arrangement.

Thread choice depends on the material. The Kreg K4 manual recommends coarse-thread screws for softwoods and composite materials such as plywood and MDF, and fine-thread screws for hardwoods. Check the screw and jig manufacturer’s guidance if you are using a different system or material.
Position holes for the part and application
Hole spacing is not a one-size-fits-all rule; consider the panel’s width and the joint’s purpose, then follow your jig manual. For wide panels, the Kreg K4 manual recommends placing the first hole 2 inches from the edge and subsequent holes 6 to 8 inches on center. It also gives guide-hole combinations for different workpiece widths. Treat those distances as K4 panel guidance rather than a universal spacing standard. Kreg K4 manual.

Drill and assemble without shifting the joint
- Secure the workpiece. Position it as directed by the jig manual and clamp it firmly so it cannot move while drilling.
- Drill to the stop. For the K4, let the drill reach full speed and feed the bit until the depth collar contacts the guide; withdraw the bit as the model instructions specify.
- Check before repeating. Confirm that the pocket is properly formed and that the screw path will not break through the workpiece before drilling the remaining holes in project stock.
- Clamp the joint during driving. Hold the pieces aligned as the screw is driven, then stop when the screw is seated. Avoid overdriving, which can pull the joint out of alignment or damage the material.
For a repair using a separated drill guide, the Kreg K4 manual permits securing the guide with a bar clamp, C-clamp, or face clamp. The guide still needs to be held firmly to the workpiece, and the bit collar must be set correctly. Kreg K4 manual.

Compare the tool’s thickness range and adjustment increments, how it secures the workpiece, and whether it is intended for portable or bench-oriented use. Check what comes in the package—such as the step bit, depth collar, gauge, or driver bit—and confirm that accessories and replacement parts fit the specific model. For example, Kreg describes its R3 as supporting stock from 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches in 1/8-inch increments and as suitable for portable repair use. The Kreg 310 product page describes a portable jig with a thickness gauge and included step drill. Kreg R3 product page; Kreg 310 product page.
