There is no universal winner between plywood and oriented strand board (OSB). Select an APA-rated structural panel by its application, performance category, thickness, span rating, support spacing, exposure classification and installation requirements. Both materials can provide similar structural performance when used as intended. OSB is a consistent, widely used choice for covered sheathing; plywood can be the better practical choice where a smooth face, more durable exposed edges or repeated handling matters.
The panel trademark, local building code and project drawings control the final choice. A sheet that looks suitable on the rack can be wrong if its span rating, thickness, edge support or exposure class does not match the wall, roof or floor assembly.

What plywood and OSB actually are
Plywood is layered veneer
Plywood is made by bonding thin wood veneers into a panel, normally with adjacent layers arranged at right angles. Veneer direction gives the sheet directional strength and stiffness. Face veneers create a relatively smooth surface, and the continuous wood layers make edges easier to inspect and finish than the strand-based edge of OSB.
OSB is cross-oriented strands
OSB is made from thin, rectangular wood strands. The strands are oriented in layers, bonded with adhesive and compressed under heat and pressure. Cross-orientation distributes strength through the panel while allowing large, uniform sheets to be manufactured from smaller wood pieces.

Neither description alone determines whether a panel is suitable. Structural panels are manufactured to performance standards, and the printed rating—not the material name—establishes where a sheet may be used.
Read the panel trademark before comparing materials
APA identifies both plywood and OSB as engineered structural panels for floor, wall and roof systems. The trademark supplies the information needed to match a sheet to the design.
- Performance category: identifies the structural panel type and nominal thickness range.
- Actual thickness: affects stiffness, fastener performance, floor feel and allowable spans.
- Span rating: states the support spacing for roof and floor applications under the stated conditions.
- Exposure or bond classification: indicates the moisture exposure the adhesive bond is designed to tolerate.
- Panel grade: may identify wall-only products, Structural I panels or products intended for a particular assembly.
- Edge profile: tongue-and-groove edges may be required for a single-layer floor.
How a two-number span rating works
Roof and floor panels commonly carry a two-number rating such as 32/16. The first number is the maximum roof-support spacing in inches on center; the second is the maximum subfloor-support spacing. A 32/16 panel is therefore rated for roof supports up to 32 inches on center and floor supports up to 16 inches on center, subject to the conditions printed with the rating.
The rating is not a universal strength score. It assumes the specified orientation, support layout, loading, fastening and edge support. A panel rated 24 inches on center cannot automatically be used over joists at 24 inches if the design also requires a different thickness, concentrated-load capacity or tongue-and-groove edge.
Exposure 1 is not the same as Exterior
APA describes Exposure 1 panels as suitable for construction or similar limited exposure, where the panel may get wet temporarily but will later be protected. Exterior panels are intended for repeated wetting and drying or long-term weather exposure. Neither bond classification, by itself, makes wood decay-proof. Decay resistance depends on moisture control, ventilation, drainage and the entire assembly.
Which is better for walls?
For walls, choose rated wall sheathing or another APA Rated Sheathing product that matches stud spacing, structural loads and the required fastening schedule. The important question is whether the panel provides the needed racking and shear capacity in the wall design, not whether its raw material is plywood or OSB.

Wall-only grades and span ratings
APA identifies wall-only grades such as Wall-16 and Wall-24. In some designs, rated sheathing with a roof span rating of 24 or greater may be installed over studs at 24 inches on center when the code or engineered design permits it. Confirm that allowance for the specific panel and wall assembly rather than assuming every 24-rated sheet qualifies.

Doors, windows and large penetrations interrupt the panel’s shear path. The design may require additional blocking, hold-downs, closer nail spacing or a different panel grade around openings. Install nails or screws at the specified edge and field spacing, keep fasteners in the framing and observe the panel’s required orientation. A stronger sheet cannot compensate for an incorrect fastening schedule or missing structural connections.
When plywood is the practical wall choice
Plywood’s face and edge can be useful where sheathing will remain visible, receive a coating, support repeated handling or be exposed at an unfinished interior. Its veneer face also makes damage easier to distinguish during inspection. These are practical advantages, not a blanket structural superiority claim.
When OSB is the practical wall choice
OSB provides consistent, uniform sheets for covered wall sheathing and is widely specified in conventional framed construction. If its APA trademark matches the wall design, OSB can meet the same intended structural function as plywood.
Which is better for roofs?
Roof sheathing must be selected by the required roof span rating, thickness, exposure classification and support spacing. Orient the panel’s strength axis across the rafters or trusses as specified by the trademark or design documents. Provide the required edge support, fastener spacing and panel gaps.

The roof is a complete system
Sheathing is not the roof’s waterproofing layer. A durable roof also needs underlayment, flashing, ventilation, properly installed roof covering and detailing at valleys, eaves, ridges, penetrations and wall intersections. APA describes roof performance as interdependent: a correctly rated panel can still suffer if water is trapped, flashing is omitted or the covering fails.

Temporary weather exposure
Construction schedules often leave sheathing exposed before the final roof covering is installed. Use the exposure class specified for that interval and cover the building promptly. Arrange overhangs, tarps or temporary protection so water can drain rather than pond. Allow wet panels to dry before installing materials that would trap moisture.
OSB and rain
Prolonged wetting can produce rough or uneven surfaces and lifting or flaking of OSB strands. That does not mean every wet OSB panel has failed, nor does plywood remain unaffected by water. Inspect for swelling, delamination, loss of edge integrity and fastener withdrawal; replace or obtain an approved assessment for panels that no longer provide a sound substrate.
When plywood helps on a roof
Plywood may be preferred where roof edges, eaves or exposed temporary surfaces will be handled repeatedly, or where a smoother face is useful for a particular finish. The roof covering and moisture detailing still determine long-term weather performance.

Start by deciding whether the project uses a single-layer floor or a separate subfloor and underlayment.
Single-layer floors
APA Rated Sturd-I-Floor products combine subfloor and underlayment functions when the finish floor and installation method allow that system. Use the required thickness, span rating, edge profile and fastening schedule. Tongue-and-groove edges or blocking may be required to control movement between joists.
Subfloor plus underlayment
APA Rated Sheathing can serve as a structural subfloor beneath the specified underlayment and finish flooring. The underlayment may be needed to provide a smooth, stable surface for resilient flooring, tile or another finish. Do not substitute a generic sheet where the floor specification calls for a rated underlayment system.

Common floor span ratings
APA lists Sturd-I-Floor span ratings including 16, 20, 24, 32 and 48 inches on center for OSB products; plywood is also available in rated configurations. Match the printed rating to the actual joist spacing. Check concentrated-load requirements for partitions, appliances, tubs, safes or heavy equipment, because a uniform distributed-load rating may not address those loads.

Floor feel and edge support
Insufficient thickness, excessive joist spacing, missing blocking or unsupported panel edges can cause bounce, squeaks and movement regardless of whether the sheet is plywood or OSB. Install panels with the strength axis across supports, leave the manufacturer’s required panel gaps and support all edges where the design calls for it.
Structural performance: what the standards say
APA’s technical comparison says plywood and OSB are manufactured to standards that assure very similar performance in intended applications such as sheathing, single-layer flooring and exterior siding. The American Wood Council summarizes the comparison this way: “For a given span rating, OSB is as strong as 5-ply plywood.”
That statement applies to panels with the same relevant rating and intended use. It does not mean any OSB sheet can replace any plywood sheet. Thickness, span rating, grade, support spacing, load, moisture exposure and fastening remain controlling variables.
Practical differences that affect the job
| Decision factor | Plywood | OSB | What it means on site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction | Cross-laminated veneer layers | Cross-oriented wood strands bonded under heat and pressure | Both can be structural when the trademark matches the application. |
| Structural equivalence | Comparable to OSB at the same applicable rating | Comparable to plywood at the same applicable rating | Compare ratings, not names. |
| Face and edge | Generally smoother face and more continuous edge | Strand texture is visible; edges can be vulnerable to swelling when persistently wet | Plywood may suit visible or repeatedly handled areas. |
| Moisture response | Can swell, delaminate or degrade if water is trapped | Can become rough, uneven, swollen or flake at strands after prolonged wetting | Use the correct exposure class and provide drainage and drying. |
| Sheet consistency | Appearance varies with veneer quality and face grade | Uniform strand-based appearance and large consistent sheets | OSB is convenient for covered structural sheathing. |
| Cost and availability | Vary by region, thickness, grade and market | Vary by region, thickness, grade and market | Check current local stock; no fixed price is reliable across markets. |
How to choose thickness and span rating
- Identify the assembly. Write down wall, roof, subfloor or single-layer floor, plus the finish materials above or below it.
- Measure support spacing. Confirm actual stud, rafter, truss or joist spacing on center. Do not infer it from nominal framing dimensions.
- Read the trademark. Record performance category, thickness, span rating, exposure classification and grade.
- Check orientation. Install the panel’s strength axis across supports unless the design expressly states otherwise.
- Verify edge conditions. Determine whether tongue-and-groove edges, blocking, clips or other edge support are required.
- Account for loads. Check code tables or the engineer’s design for distributed loads, concentrated loads, partitions and unusual equipment.
- Confirm the fastening schedule. Use the specified fastener type, length, edge distance and spacing; structural panels do not perform as rated when poorly attached.
- Resolve exposure. Select Exposure 1 for permitted limited construction exposure or Exterior where the design calls for repeated wetting and drying or long-term weather exposure.
- Check local approval. Verify the panel and installation against the jurisdiction’s adopted building code and the project drawings before ordering.
Installation and moisture-management checklist
- Store sheets flat, supported above grade and protected from standing water.
- Keep bundles covered while allowing air circulation so condensation does not remain trapped.
- Install the panel with the marked strength direction and required side facing the correct way.
- Leave the manufacturer’s specified expansion gaps at panel ends and edges.
- Provide blocking, clips or tongue-and-groove joints where the design requires unsupported edges to be restrained.
- Drive fasteners flush without crushing the face or breaking through the opposite side.
- Use underlayment, flashing, drainage planes and roof coverings as specified; sheathing alone is not waterproofing.
- Cover panels promptly after construction wetting and provide ventilation so incidental moisture can dry.
- Before enclosing a wall or floor, investigate any swollen edges, delamination, lifted strands, soft spots or panels that have lost their fastening surface.
What to do when panels get wet or damaged
Surface roughness without structural damage
Allow the assembly to dry, remove raised fibers only as permitted by the finish specification and check that fasteners remain tight. Do not sand away significant panel thickness or rely on a finish to conceal a loss of structural section.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSwollen edges
Measure the swelling and compare it with the panel manufacturer’s instructions and the floor or roof finish tolerance. Replace panels that prevent a flat finish, no longer fit their joints or have lost edge integrity. Do not force swollen tongue-and-groove joints together.

Delamination or flaking strands
Delamination, lifting veneers or flaking OSB strands indicate more than cosmetic wetting. Keep the area open for inspection and have the panel evaluated by the designer, building official or manufacturer. Replace it when its rated capacity or fastening performance cannot be established.
Panels exposed before the building is closed
Find and correct the water path first: roof leaks, missing flashing, open penetrations, poor grading or trapped condensation. Dry the assembly before adding insulation, membranes or finishes that could conceal continuing moisture.
Common selection mistakes
- Choosing by price alone: a cheaper sheet with the wrong rating can require replacement and still fail inspection.
- Ignoring the second span number: a roof rating does not automatically authorize the same spacing on a floor.
- Confusing bond class with decay resistance: Exposure 1 or Exterior describes intended adhesive-bond exposure, not immunity to rot.
- Using a wall panel on a floor: wall-only grades may not carry the floor span or concentrated-load requirements.
- Skipping edge support: unsupported joints can move even when the sheet thickness is correct.
- Enclosing wet work: trapped construction moisture can damage panels and adjacent framing.
- Assuming plywood is waterproof: veneer can swell or delaminate when water remains trapped.
- Assuming OSB is weak: a correctly rated OSB panel can provide the intended structural performance of a similarly rated plywood panel.
Application-based buying checklist
Before purchasing, write the required information on the order:
- Walls: rated wall sheathing, stud spacing, shear design, panel thickness, fastening schedule and opening details.
- Roofs: roof span rating, rafter or truss spacing, exposure classification, panel orientation, edge support and complete weatherproofing assembly.
- Floors: Sturd-I-Floor or Rated Sheathing designation, joist spacing, thickness, tongue-and-groove requirement, concentrated-load needs and underlayment type.
- Any use: exact performance category, grade and exposure classification printed on the panel.
If the sheet does not carry the information required by the design, do not guess from its appearance. Ask the supplier, designer or building official for a documented equivalent.
Bottom line for the three applications
| Application | Best selection rule | When plywood may be preferable | When OSB is appropriate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walls | Use rated sheathing matched to shear design, stud spacing, thickness and fastening. | Visible faces, repeated handling or finish-sensitive work. | Covered structural wall sheathing with the required rating. |
| Roofs | Match roof span rating, exposure class, orientation, edge support and roof-system details. | Exposed edges, temporary handling or a smoother face requirement. | Rated sheathing under a complete, properly flashed and ventilated roof. |
| Floors | Match Sturd-I-Floor or Rated Sheathing designation, joist spacing, thickness, edge joint and loads. | Projects needing a particular face, edge or finish characteristic. | Rated subfloor or single-layer floor panels installed at their printed span. |
The reliable choice is the panel whose trademark and installation details satisfy the application. Compare plywood and OSB only after the required rating, thickness, span and exposure have been established.
