Choose the bit by the operation: a dedicated edge-banding set cuts matching profiles in solid-wood edging stock, while a bearing-guided flush-trim bit trims overhang from edging that is already attached. They are different tools for different stages of finishing a plywood edge.
Which plywood edging operation are you doing?
| What you need to do | Bit to consider | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Make solid-wood edging to fit a plywood or MDF panel | Dedicated edge-banding router-bit set | Cuts matching profiles in edging stock so the pieces can be joined and attached. |
| Trim edging already glued to a panel | Bearing-guided flush-trim bit | Removes the edging’s overhang, following a suitable reference surface. |
Buying a profile set will not, by itself, trim attached edging flush. Likewise, a flush-trim bit does not make the matching joint used to produce solid-wood banding.
For making solid-wood edging: use a profile set
CMT 8/955.510: check panel thickness before buying
CMT describes its 8/955.510 set for making edge banding for cabinet doors from plywood or MDF. Its product listing specifies panels 12.7 mm or 25.4 mm thick and a 60-degree tongue-and-groove profile. CMT says to center each cutter on the edging stock, cut the matching profiles, and glue the two pieces together; trim the assembled edging flush afterward if needed. The manufacturer describes the joint as having “an ample surface area for glue application.” See CMT’s 8/955.510 product details.
Those thicknesses apply to this specific set. Do not assume they are compatible with another panel thickness or with a different edge-banding set; check the chosen product’s complete specifications.

Another route: two-bit banding sets
Klingspor describes a two-bit approach for making hardwood banding for plywood, particleboard, or MDF. Its listing specifies carbide tips and a 1/2-inch shank, and says the finished banding can be trimmed with a router or hand plane. Treat this as a separate product path: confirm current model details, cutter dimensions, shank fit, and panel compatibility on the applicable listing before purchase. View Klingspor’s plywood-edging set.
For trimming attached edging: use a flush-trim bit
A flush-trim bit cuts away the portion of edging that projects beyond the panel. Freud describes flush-trim bits for cutting cleanly along a flush edge and lists plywood among suitable materials. Bosch’s flush-trim category also lists plywood and includes bearing-guided products. These manufacturer descriptions establish plywood as a suitable material, but they do not make every bit suitable for every edge or router. See Freud’s flush-trim range and Bosch’s flush-trim bits.

- Route dados and straight cuts sized to receive dressed plywood
- Premium C3 micro-grain tungsten carbide blades for a sharper & longer lasting edge
- For use on CNC, table mount and handheld routers
- Silver induction brazing for maximum strength and durability
To find a suitable product, search for a bearing-guided flush-trim router bit for plywood edge banding, then check bearing position, cutting length, and shank diameter against the panel, edging overhang, and router. The bearing must ride on a usable reference surface; a mismatch in bearing location or cutter length can prevent the bit from trimming the intended edge safely and cleanly.
Plan the guide and support before routing
A bearing helps guide the cutter, but the router and panel still need stable support along the edge. The reference surface and setup should suit the bit and workpiece; the published examples below are alternatives, not a universal best method.

Fit checks to make before purchasing
- Confirm whether you need to cut profiles in edging stock or trim attached edging.
- For an edge-banding set, verify supported panel thickness and the resulting profile or joint.
- For a flush-trim bit, confirm bearing location and cutting length suit the reference edge and overhang.
- Check shank diameter and the router’s compatibility, along with the product’s full specifications.
- Plan how the router and panel will remain supported along the edge.
