A platform balance is a weighing instrument with a broad, stable surface for loads such as packages, containers and bulk goods. For construction and related work, choosing one means matching its capacity, minimum load, measurement requirements, platform size and construction to the job—not simply picking the scale with the finest-looking display.
What a platform balance is used for
Platform balances support workflows where a load needs to sit on a relatively broad weighing surface. METTLER TOLEDO describes applications including shipping and receiving, manufacturing and inventory management, with loads such as packages, containers and bulk goods. Its product range is manufacturer-specific; it is not a universal definition of available configurations. See METTLER TOLEDO’s platform scales overview.
At a construction site, the relevant question is what you will weigh and how the load reaches the platform. Consider materials, containers or deliveries that need weighing as part of a documented workflow. The sources do not establish a standard platform size for construction loads, so check the dimensions and handling arrangements of the exact model you are considering.
How to select a platform scale
NIST advises buyers to consider suitability, accuracy, capacity and minimum load. In Handbook 44, Section 2.20, the selection requirement says: “Equipment shall be suitable for the service in which it is used with respect to elements of its design, including but not limited to, its capacity, number of scale divisions, value of the scale division or verification scale division, minimum capacity, and computing capability.” NIST quotes this requirement in its Class II scale considerations.

It's incredibly easy to use with just one button to start weighing, and the high-definition LED screen ensures clear and accurate readings. Plus, you can easily switch between kg and lb units for convenient reading.
- AC/DC Power Supply: Our computing floor scale is designed for maximum efficiency with both a power adapter and rechargeable batteries. This dual-power system ensures uninterrupted use, even in the event of a power failure. Enjoy long-term use without worrying about running out of power.
- A Frame that Lasts: The large platform is constructed of durable carbon steel, making it is non-deformed and rust-proof. The screen is made of stainless steel, ensuring years of use without worrying about damage from bumps. You can trust this scale to last.
- 90° Foldable & Adjustable Feet: The commercial weight scale features a 90° folding design, making it a great space-saver that can be conveniently stored under shelves or by the wall. Its 4 feet can be adjusted to fit different surfaces, ensuring accurate measurements every time.
1. Establish the load range
List the lightest and heaviest loads the scale must handle. The maximum expected load must stay within the scale’s rated capacity, but the minimum load matters too: an instrument may not be suitable for weighing very small loads just because its maximum capacity is ample. METTLER TOLEDO gives a range of 0.6 kg to 600 kg in its FAQ for its own platform scales; the page does not state a year for that figure, and it should not be treated as a general range for all brands or models. Check the specification for the configuration you intend to use. Manufacturer overview and FAQ.
2. Specify the measurement performance
Decide what measurement performance the job requires, including the applicable accuracy class and readability. A display’s smallest increment alone does not establish the scale’s accuracy or whether it is suitable for a regulated application.

- Digital shipping postal scale for weighing items; heavy duty yet lightweight, portable design
- Includes a postal scale and an AC adapter; black ABS with an aluminum anti-skid platform
- 660 pound (300kg) capacity reads to 0.11 pound/50g/2 ounce in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 6 ounces (150g)
- Measuring units in kg, ounces, and pounds
- Additional separated large back-lit LCD display allows for reading the weighing data from a distance of up to 2m
NIST distinguishes the displayed scale division (d) from the verification scale division (e). For relevant device classes, e is used in determining the applicable accuracy class and tolerances. If the scale will be used for legal-for-trade weighing, confirm the requirements for the intended use and exact device configuration rather than comparing display increments alone. See NIST’s explanation of Class II scale considerations.
3. Check load and platform fit
Match the platform dimensions and shape to the packages, containers or bulk loads you will weigh. Account for how loads are placed, whether they overhang, and the equipment or people needed to move them onto and off the scale. Available evidence does not establish one suitable platform size for every application; confirm dimensions and handling limits in the model’s specifications.

4. Match the construction to the site
Choose construction for the actual exposure and cleaning conditions. METTLER TOLEDO describes options for dry and wet environments, hygienic applications, stainless-steel construction, hazardous areas, ramps and bench use. These are examples from one manufacturer, not features every platform scale offers. Confirm that the specific model is appropriate for moisture, washdown, corrosion exposure or hazardous-area requirements at your site. METTLER TOLEDO platform scale configurations.
5. Fit the scale to the workflow
Consider where the operator needs to see the reading and whether the scale must connect to a computer or another device. METTLER TOLEDO describes digital displays and device connections; its source does not establish that every model includes a particular interface. Also determine whether the workflow requires functions such as counting, checkweighing or totals, and verify their availability on the exact configuration.

6. Confirm trade-use and verification needs
If weight determines a commercial transaction or another regulated outcome, check whether the intended use makes the scale a legal-metrology device in your jurisdiction. NIST says commercial scales must comply with state law where used in that capacity; it reports that many state and local authorities, and some federal authorities, adopt Handbook 44. Adoption and requirements can vary, so consult the relevant weights-and-measures authority and verify approval for the exact model and configuration. NIST’s 2025 edition of Handbook 44 provides specifications, tolerances and technical requirements for weighing and measuring devices.
