For an Indian home with a reliable PNG connection, piped natural gas usually removes the daily work of storing, booking and replacing cylinders. It is not automatically cheaper for every household, however. Your result depends on the local PNG tariff, LPG refill price after any subsidy, consumption, connection charges and the cost of converting or replacing appliances. Safety also depends more on sound installation, ventilation, maintenance and leak response than on choosing one fuel by reputation.

This guide compares pipeline-delivered natural gas (PNG) with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders and gives a practical method for deciding whether a switch makes sense for your building and budget.

What PNG and LPG are

PNG is natural gas delivered through a city-gas pipeline, composed primarily of methane. LPG is a liquefied fuel, mainly propane and butane, stored under pressure in a cylinder and vaporised for cooking. The different physical forms explain the everyday experience: PNG arrives through a fixed network, while LPG arrives as a cylinder that must be stored, booked and exchanged or refilled.

Both are combustible gases. Neither should be treated as risk-free, and neither is suitable for an improvised connection or an appliance that has not been approved for that fuel.

Which fuel costs less?

There is no nationwide answer that can be applied to every Indian kitchen. Compare your own current LPG refill cost with the PNG supplier’s tariff and then add the one-time costs of changing over. A household that qualifies for LPG subsidy may see a smaller recurring saving than a household paying the market-linked refill price.

What the national comparison does—and does not—say

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) states in its 2026 Natural Gas in India booklet: “Domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) is cheaper by 40% as compared to market-priced LPG and almost matches with the price of subsidised LPG.” This is a broad published comparison, not an audited current bill comparison for a particular city, building or family. It should not be presented as a guaranteed 40% saving.

Your authorised city-gas distributor, district tariff, meter-reading method, consumption pattern, taxes and any applicable charges determine the PNG bill. LPG cost depends on the current refill price and whether government support applies to your household. Domestic LPG pricing is linked to international benchmarks, while government price support can change the amount a qualifying customer actually pays. A January 2026 release gives Delhi-specific figures; those figures should not be carried over as current prices for another state or city.

Calculate a household break-even point

  1. Collect two or three recent LPG refill receipts and record the amount actually paid after any subsidy. Note how many refills the household uses in a year.
  2. Ask the authorised PNG entity for its current domestic tariff, fixed or minimum charges, meter rules, taxes and billing frequency. Obtain the quote in writing.
  3. Estimate annual PNG cost from the distributor’s tariff and your expected metered consumption. Use the supplier’s conversion guidance rather than attempting to translate cylinder weight directly into a guaranteed gas volume.
  4. List one-time PNG costs separately: refundable security deposit, installation or last-mile work, meter or building charges, and any association or access fee disclosed by the provider.
  5. Price an approved PNG-compatible stove or an authorised conversion of your existing stove. Include labour and any replacement burners, jets, regulators or hoses.
  6. Subtract the annual PNG estimate from your actual annual LPG spend. Divide the one-time changeover cost by the expected annual saving to estimate a simple payback period. If the saving is negligible, the convenience benefit—not a claimed financial saving—may be the main reason to switch.

Do not hide a refundable deposit inside a permanent fuel cost, but do include the temporary cash requirement and ask when and how it is returned. Confirm whether the quote covers installation labour and last-mile connectivity. Charges for a meter, pipeline route or building-specific work may be separate.

Why consumption changes the result

A small household that cooks infrequently may not use enough gas for a connection fee and appliance work to pay back quickly. A larger family, a home that cooks several meals daily or a property using gas for additional appliances may reach the break-even point sooner. Conversely, a PNG tariff with a substantial fixed charge can reduce the advantage for very low consumption. Calculate from your own bills rather than from a national percentage.

Connection and first-year costs

PNGRB’s domestic FAQ describes a PNG connection cost as including a refundable, interest-free security deposit for equipment and facilities, including installation labour for last-mile connectivity, and sets a ceiling for a single connection. The precise amount and inclusions can change with the authorised entity and current rules. Request the provider’s latest schedule before paying.

  • Ask whether the quote includes the meter, regulator, service line, testing and commissioning.
  • Confirm whether the housing society, landlord or local authority must approve pipe routing.
  • Ask about refundable versus non-refundable amounts and the conditions for a refund when the connection is surrendered.
  • Get a written price for appliance conversion or a replacement stove.
  • Keep the agreement, deposit receipt, commissioning record and emergency number with your household documents.

LPG generally has lower entry friction when a household already owns an approved stove and has an established distributor. It still requires a compliant cylinder location, regulator, hose and periodic checks, and refill costs continue whenever the cylinder is used.

Safety: properties, risks and correct actions

How the gases behave

The Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell states that natural gas is lighter than air and, with adequate ventilation, rises and disperses after a leak. It gives flammable ranges in air of 5–15% for natural gas and 2–10% for LPG. These are physical flammability ranges, not a complete home-safety rating. A leak in a poorly ventilated room, near an ignition source or combined with defective equipment can still cause fire or explosion.

LPG can collect in low areas because its vapour is heavier than air. That makes cylinder placement, ventilation and avoidance of pits or enclosed low spaces particularly important. For either fuel, a smell should be treated as a warning, not as proof that the gas is harmless because it has been odorised.

Preventive controls for either system

  • Use only an authorised installer and equipment approved for the specific fuel and pressure.
  • Keep burners, valves, regulators, meters and hoses accessible for inspection; do not conceal them behind permanent construction without an approved service arrangement.
  • Maintain effective ventilation and never block permanent vents.
  • Do not use a visibly cracked hose, damaged regulator, corroded pipe or burner that produces abnormal flames.
  • Keep flames and other ignition sources away from cylinders, meters and suspected leak points.
  • Arrange inspection or servicing through the authorised provider, especially after renovation, flooding, impact or a change in appliance.

What to do if you smell gas

Follow the provider’s current emergency instructions. PNGRB consumer guidance for a suspected leak or irregularity includes these immediate actions:

Convenience and reliability

Where PNG is easier

Once commissioned, PNG eliminates cylinder storage, refill booking and waiting for a delivery. The meter records consumption and the supply is available at the appliance without lifting a cylinder. This is especially useful for households with limited storage, older residents or frequent cooking.

That convenience assumes a functioning network, an active account and safe access to the building’s service line. A network outage, planned maintenance, emergency isolation or building-level fault can interrupt supply. Ask the distributor how outage notices and restoration work are handled.

Where LPG is more flexible

LPG can serve a property beyond the PNG network, including many rented, rural or newly built homes. Cylinders can also provide an alternative during a PNG interruption, provided the household has a separate approved LPG installation and follows all safety rules. Do not connect two fuels to one appliance or switch fuel without the required equipment and provider approval.

Building and tenancy considerations

In an apartment or gated development, a PNG connection may require permission for riser access, external piping, meter placement and inspection. A tenant should obtain the landlord’s consent and clarify who owns the meter, pays the deposit and arranges disconnection. Ask the building manager whether the network is already commissioned for your block; a pipeline at the property boundary does not necessarily mean an individual kitchen is ready for service.

Changing from LPG to PNG safely

Do not assume an LPG stove is ready for PNG. PNGRB’s domestic FAQ says basic stove changes may be required and describes conversion by the company under the regulation cited in that FAQ. It also identifies an energy-efficient PNG stove as an alternative. The current local provider should confirm whether your specific model can be converted and who is permitted to perform the work.

  1. Check network availability and request a domestic connection quote from the authorised PNG entity.
  2. Provide the stove make and model, photographs of the rating plate and details of any other gas appliance.
  3. Ask whether the provider will convert the appliance, whether a certified technician must do it, and what parts will be replaced.
  4. Have the LPG installation isolated according to the distributor’s instructions. Do not leave a cylinder connected as a casual backup.
  5. Install the PNG meter, service line, regulator and shut-off valve through the authorised process.
  6. Have the converted or new appliance tested, leak-checked and commissioned before use.
  7. Keep the commissioning record and follow the provider’s instructions for lighting, shutdown and maintenance.

Never change jets, drill burner orifices, alter regulators or rely on an unqualified retrofit. Gas pressure, burner design and air mixing differ by fuel; an appliance that appears to light can still produce unsafe combustion or a leak.

Decision guide: which is right for your home?

Your situation Likely practical choice What to verify
A PNG network is commissioned, you cook daily and cylinder handling is inconvenient PNG is a strong candidate Local tariff, fixed charges, deposit, conversion cost and outage procedure
You qualify for subsidised LPG and use little gas LPG may remain financially competitive Your actual post-subsidy annual spend and PNG payback period
Your building has no PNG service Continue with an authorised LPG supply unless a network expansion is confirmed Distributor reliability, cylinder storage and ventilation
You rent and may move soon LPG may avoid a connection investment Who owns the connection and whether the deposit is refundable
Your stove is old or its model cannot be converted PNG may require a new approved appliance Full first-year cost, warranty and installation responsibility
You need fuel diversity for a critical kitchen Choose only systems that remain separately compliant Provider-approved equipment; never improvise a dual-fuel connection

A simple yes-or-no checklist

  • Is PNG service available at your exact building and address?
  • Have you compared a written local PNG quote with your real LPG payments after subsidy?
  • Can the provider legally and safely convert your stove, or will you need a new one?
  • Will you stay in the property long enough for the one-time cost to make sense?
  • Does your home have adequate ventilation and accessible shut-off valves?
  • Do every adult and older child know the leak response and emergency contact?

If the first three answers are yes and the annual calculation shows a worthwhile saving or a meaningful reduction in handling, PNG is generally the more convenient option. If service is unavailable, consumption is low or the connection would not pay back during your expected stay, an authorised LPG arrangement may be the more sensible choice.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a national percentage as a personal quote: the PNGRB 40% statement compares broad categories and does not account for your tariff, subsidy or consumption.
  • Ignoring first-year costs: deposits, installation, building work and an appliance change can outweigh a small recurring saving for several years.
  • Calling either fuel completely safe: ventilation, maintenance and rapid isolation remain essential.
  • Converting a stove without approval: use the authorised provider or a technician accepted by that provider.
  • Assuming a pipeline means uninterrupted supply: ask how planned and emergency outages are communicated.
  • Keeping an abandoned cylinder as an informal backup: arrange safe disconnection and storage or return through the authorised distributor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PNG always cheaper than LPG in India?

No. PNGRB’s 2026 booklet gives a broad comparison in which domestic PNG is 40% cheaper than market-priced LPG and nearly matches subsidised LPG, but local tariffs, subsidy eligibility, consumption and connection costs determine an individual household’s result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use my LPG stove with PNG immediately?

Not necessarily. Ask the authorised PNG provider whether the model can be converted or must be replaced, and have the work, parts and commissioning completed through the approved process.

What should I do first if I smell gas?

Avoid flames and electrical switches, close the main valve only if safe, open doors and windows, leave the area and call the authorised provider’s emergency helpline from a safe location.
