For most U.S. shoppers, the practical choice is standard, queen, or king; Euro pillows are usually square accent pillows. Typical dimensions are about 20 × 26 inches for standard, 20 × 30 for queen, 20 × 36 for king, and 26 × 26 for Euro. Pick size for coverage and appearance, but pick loft, firmness, fill, and shape for support. Always check the manufacturer’s actual measurements before buying a case.
For most U.S. shoppers, the right starting point is standard (about 20 × 26 inches), queen (about 20 × 30 inches), or king (about 20 × 36 inches). Euro pillows are usually square, about 26 × 26 inches, and are used mainly for decoration or upright support. Choose the size for the coverage and bed arrangement you want, but choose the loft, firmness, fill, and shape for neck support. A king pillow is longer; it is not automatically more supportive.

These are category conventions, not guaranteed finished measurements. Before buying a pillowcase, sham, or protector, check the product’s stated width, length, thickness, and gusset. Specialty pillows—including contour, cervical, body, and maternity designs—can differ substantially from ordinary bed-pillow dimensions.
U.S. pillow sizes at a glance
| Pillow type | Typical dimensions | Common uses | What to buy for it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | About 20 × 26 in | Twin, full, queen, or mixed-size arrangements | Standard pillowcase, after confirming the finished measurement |
| Queen | About 20 × 30 in | Full or queen beds; extra length without a king pillow | queen pillowcase or protector |
| King | About 20 × 36 in | King or California king beds; a broad visual and sleeping surface | King pillowcase or protector |
| Euro | About 26 × 26 in | Decorative layering, reading support, or square arrangements | Euro sham or square Euro cover |
| Body | Often about 9 × 60 in, but highly variable | Full-body, pregnancy, side-sleeping, and leg support | The brand’s designated body-pillow case |
| Toddler or child | Varies and is smaller than adult bedding | Child-specific sleep use | An age-appropriate case and pillow |
The standard, queen, king, and Euro measurements above are widely used U.S. conventions. Textile specifications such as those summarized in the HSN textile manual use these same nominal dimensions, but individual manufacturers may make narrower pillows, longer pillows, gusseted pillows, or shaped pillows. For example, Coop lists its Original classic pillow at approximately 19 × 29 inches in queen and 19 × 35 inches in king. Its crescent and cut-out models are narrower and include a 2-inch gusset. Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR-Cloud is another reminder that labels are not enough: its listed queen dimensions are approximately 24 × 15.75 × 5 inches and its king dimensions approximately 31.5 × 15.75 × 5 inches.

Which pillow size should you choose?
Choose standard for flexibility and easy replacement
A standard pillow is usually the simplest choice when you want broad case availability, a lower purchase price, or a modular arrangement. One standard pillow can work on a twin bed. Two standard pillows can be arranged across a full or queen bed, either alone or with decorative Euros.
Standard pillows are also useful when sleepers prefer separate pillows rather than one long surface. The trade-off is less horizontal coverage than a queen or king pillow.

A queen pillow is about 4 inches longer than a standard pillow. It can suit a full or queen bed when you want more room to change positions but do not need the long line of a king pillow. It is often a practical middle ground for sleepers who find standard pillows cramped and king pillows excessive.
If you are shopping for a queen size pillow, treat “queen” as a starting category rather than a precise measurement. Compare the actual dimensions, fill weight, loft, and case requirements before ordering.
Choose king for maximum length and a unified bed arrangement
A king pillow is typically about 36 inches long, giving a wide sleeping surface and a continuous appearance across a king or California king bed. It can also be useful for a sleeper who likes one long pillow instead of two separate pillows.
King pillows are not inherently better for neck alignment. Their extra length affects coverage and appearance, while support depends more on height, firmness, fill, and shape. King cases are also too long for most standard pillows, so do not buy a king case as a loose substitute.

- SET OF 2 QUEEN SIZE PILLOWS WITH A 100% COTTON COVER: Each pillow measures 20 x 28 inches with a plush 8-inch loft, filled with 1,050g of hollow fiber down alternative inside a 250 thread count, 100% cotton cover. Two Queen pillows fit neatly across a queen or full bed and slip easily into standard or queen pillowcases.
- MEDIUM-FIRM FEEL FOR SIDE AND BACK SLEEPERS: The medium-firm feel holds your head up instead of flattening under it, which suits side and back sleepers who want steady support from lights out to alarm. The fill is spread evenly edge to edge, so you won't find empty corners or a lumpy middle.
- BREATHABLE COTTON FOR HOT SLEEPERS: Microfiber shells can trap heat against your face, but a 100% cotton cover lets air move through as you sleep, so your pillow feels cooler and fresher. A smart choice if you run warm at night, live somewhere humid, or share a bedroom that heats up in summer.
- OEKO-TEX CERTIFIED COVER, FEATHER-FREE FILL: The cotton cover is certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, and the down alternative fill has no feathers or quills, so nothing pokes through and there's no feathery smell. The hollow fibers spring back night after night, keeping a full, hotel-style shape with a quick fluff.
- MACHINE WASHABLE AND EASY TO CARE FOR: Wash each pillow on a gentle cycle and air dry, and it comes back fresh and fluffy. When your pillows first arrive, give them a few good shakes and up to 24 hours to reach full loft. A simple upgrade for your main bedroom, a guest room, or your first apartment.
Choose Euro for a square accent or upright support
A Euro pillow is usually about 26 × 26 inches. It is commonly placed behind standard, queen, or king pillows for decorative layering, but its square shape can also provide useful support when sitting up to read. A Euro is not a conventional bed pillow, so it normally requires a Euro sham or square cover rather than a standard rectangular case.
Does pillow size need to match the bed size?
No. Bed size and pillow size are related mainly to appearance, available surface, and arrangement—not to a strict compatibility rule.
- Twin bed: One standard pillow is a conventional fit. A queen pillow may work if you want more length, provided it does not crowd the sleeping surface.
- Full bed: One queen pillow or two standard pillows can work, depending on the sleeper and the look you want.
- Queen bed: Two standard or queen pillows are common. A king pillow can be used if you prefer a longer, less segmented arrangement.
- King or California king bed: Two king pillows create a broad, balanced line, but standard or queen pillows can be preferable when each sleeper wants a separate size or firmness.
Separate the question “Will it fit the bed?” from “Will it fit me?” A king pillow may span more of the mattress but still be too high, too soft, too firm, or the wrong shape for your neck. Conversely, two standard pillows may give a better arrangement for partners with different sleep positions.
How to choose the correct pillowcase
Match the case to the pillow’s actual finished dimensions—not just the marketing label. A nominal queen pillow may be close to 20 × 30 inches, but a full or gusseted pillow can need a roomier case. A case that is too small may compress the fill, distort the shape, or strain the zipper or seams. A case that is too large allows the pillow to shift and can leave unsupported pockets of fabric.
- Read the product specification. Record width, length, thickness, and gusset depth if listed.
- Check whether measurements are approximate. Foam, down, fiberfill, and adjustable-fill products can change shape when compressed or fluffed.
- Match the category only after checking dimensions. Use a standard case for a standard-size product, queen for queen, and king for king unless the manufacturer gives different guidance.
- Allow for fullness. A thick, gusseted, or densely filled pillow may require a case with more interior room than a flat insert of the same length and width.
- Use specialty covers for specialty shapes. Contour, cervical, maternity, and body pillows are not reliably interchangeable.
Once you have selected the pillow, a queen pillowcase, king protector, or Euro pillow sham can be chosen by the same measurement-first method. A protector is especially useful when the pillow’s inner fill or foam cannot be machine-washed; verify the manufacturer’s care instructions rather than assuming the entire pillow is washable.
Size is not the same as support
Pillow length and width determine how much surface you can use and how the pillow looks on the bed. Loft—the pillow’s height—along with firmness, fill, and shape has more influence on whether your head and neck remain comfortable.

Johns Hopkins advises considering a pillow that supports and cradles the neck for people dealing with neck or shoulder discomfort. Harvard Health’s practical test is alignment: your head should not be tipped sharply upward, pushed toward your chest, or allowed to fall noticeably to one side. Softness and price alone are poor ways to judge support.
Side sleepers
Start with a medium-to-higher-loft pillow that fills the space between your mattress and the side of your head without pushing your head sharply upward. The right height varies with shoulder width, body shape, and mattress firmness. A very firm mattress may leave more space beneath the head than a deeply compressible mattress.
An adjustable pillow can be a practical option if you are unsure how much height you need. Remove fill if your head is pushed too high; add fill if your neck drops toward the mattress. Make changes gradually and assess the result over several nights.
Back sleepers
Begin with a lower or medium loft that supports the curve of the neck without forcing the chin toward the chest. A cervical or contoured pillow may help some sleepers maintain a comfortable position, but its shape is not automatically better for everyone. Check whether the contour fits your neck and whether you can change position without feeling trapped in one spot.
Stomach sleepers
A relatively low, softer pillow is often the most comfortable starting point because a tall pillow can increase neck rotation or extension while you are lying face down. Some stomach sleepers prefer no pillow beneath the head and use a thin pillow elsewhere for comfort. Personal anatomy and medical circumstances still matter.
Combination sleepers
If you move between your side and back, an adjustable-fill pillow makes it easier to change height and firmness rather than buying a different pillow for every position. Products marketed as adjustable allow fill to be added or removed; confirm that the design includes removable fill and that the cover can be opened and washed as directed.

Pregnancy and full-body support
A body or maternity pillow is a separate category, not simply an oversized king pillow. Body pillows are often around 9 × 60 inches, but dimensions vary substantially. Coop, for example, lists its maternity pillow at 9 × 60 inches and describes it for pregnancy and later use. A body pillow or maternity pillow can support the abdomen, back, knees, or legs, but it needs its own correctly sized case.
Specialty pillow shapes: what changes?
- Contour or cervical pillows
- These use shaped foam or raised edges to support the neck. Their measurements are not equivalent to standard, queen, or king categories, so use the manufacturer’s cover.
- Cooling pillows
- Cooling covers, gel layers, or ventilated foam may change thickness and care requirements. Check whether the outer cover is removable and washable, and never assume the foam core can go in a washing machine.
- adjustable pillows
- These are useful when you are uncertain about loft or change positions. They may arrive overfilled so the user can remove material; store removed fill if the manufacturer permits later adjustment.
- Body and maternity pillows
- These offer length and positioning support rather than the compact, head-only format of a bed pillow. Their cases are highly brand-specific.
- Child pillows
- Children need age-appropriate products. Do not substitute an oversized adult pillow simply because it is soft or inexpensive, and follow applicable safety guidance for the child’s age.
What research says about pillow height and neck comfort
Controlled studies show that pillow height and design can affect cervical posture, pressure, temperature, and perceived comfort. One pillow-height study found that increasing height changed cranio-cervical pressure and modeled cervical alignment. Another comparison found that pillow shape and filling influenced the cervical curve, temperature, and comfort.
That evidence does not establish one universally ideal pillow or prove that a particular size cures neck pain. A systematic review found that some pillow types were associated with reductions in neck pain or waking symptoms, but pooled results did not show a significant improvement in sleep quality. A later review emphasized that the research is heterogeneous and does not support one best design for every sleeper.
The defensible takeaway is simple: choose size for fit and usable surface area, then adjust loft and shape to keep your head and neck in a comfortable, relatively neutral position. Do not assume that a larger pillow, memory foam, or an “orthopedic” label guarantees better support.
Common pillow-buying mistakes
- Buying the case before measuring the pillow: nominal labels vary by manufacturer.
- Confusing a Euro sham with a bed-pillow case: Euros are square and need square covers.
- Using a queen case on a very full or gusseted pillow: compression can change the pillow’s support and shape.
- Choosing by bed size alone: a pillow can look right on the bed but still have the wrong loft for the sleeper.
- Assuming king means healthier: length does not determine neck alignment.
- Treating a body pillow as a king pillow: body pillows have different dimensions, purposes, and covers.
- Ignoring return and hygiene policies: some sellers restrict returns on personal-use bedding. Tempur-Pedic, for example, states that its pillows may not be returned under its listed policy.
- Expecting a pillow to treat a medical condition: persistent pain, numbness, headaches, snoring, or suspected sleep apnea needs appropriate clinical attention.
A practical shopping checklist
- Measure or confirm the pillow’s finished width, length, thickness, and gusset.
- Choose standard for modularity, queen for extra length without king size, king for a long surface, and Euro for square decorative or upright support.
- Choose the loft and firmness based on your sleeping position, shoulder width, mattress firmness, and alignment—not bed size alone.
- If you change positions or are unsure about height, consider an adjustable-fill design.
- Buy the matching case or protector, especially for foam, contour, maternity, and body pillows.
- Confirm whether the cover is removable and washable and how the interior should be cleaned.
- Read the return, warranty, and hygiene policies before opening or sleeping on the pillow.
- Do not treat price, branding, or “orthopedic” wording as proof of superior support.
Bottom line
For most U.S. beds, standard, queen, and king pillows are the main choices: about 20 × 26, 20 × 30, and 20 × 36 inches, respectively. Euro pillows are usually about 26 × 26 inches and are primarily square accent or support pillows. Pick the size that gives you the desired coverage and bed arrangement, then use loft, firmness, fill, and shape to solve the support question. Always verify the manufacturer’s actual dimensions before buying a case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does pillow size have to match bed size?
No. Pillow size does not have to exactly match mattress size. One standard pillow can work on a twin, two standard or queen pillows can work on a full or queen, and king pillows create a longer arrangement on king or California king beds.

What are the standard pillow sizes?
A standard pillow is typically about 20 × 26 inches, a queen about 20 × 30 inches, a king about 20 × 36 inches, and a Euro about 26 × 26 inches. Actual product measurements vary.
How do I know what size pillowcase to buy?
Measure the pillow’s actual width, length, thickness, and gusset, then compare those measurements with the case’s interior dimensions. Do not rely only on the words standard, queen, or king.
What pillow height is best for each sleeping position?
Side sleepers often start with medium-to-higher loft, back sleepers with lower-to-medium loft, and stomach sleepers with a low, softer pillow. These are starting points; alignment and comfort matter more than a fixed rule.
Is a king pillow better for neck support?
No. A king pillow offers more length and coverage, but support depends mainly on loft, firmness, fill, and shape. A larger pillow is not automatically better for neck alignment.
The Bottom Line
Choose pillow size for coverage and appearance; choose loft, firmness, fill, and shape for support. Standard is about 20 × 26 inches, queen about 20 × 30, king about 20 × 36, and Euro about 26 × 26. Because products vary, measure the actual pillow before buying its case.
