Pick strawberries when they are fully red, with no white areas—including white shoulders. Check plants daily once fruit starts turning red, handle berries gently, and refrigerate them promptly. Strawberries do not ripen further after picking, so leave partly white fruit on the plant.
How to tell when strawberries are ripe
Look for berries that are fully colored red from tip to leafy stem end. If any part remains white, leave the fruit on the plant and check it again later. The University of Minnesota Extension notes that flavor and sugar levels are best when berries are picked fully ripe. Some varieties can have white shoulders where leaves shade the fruit, so check the whole berry rather than relying on its exposed side alone. Color is a more useful picking cue than a fixed date. Penn State Extension gives about 28–30 days after full bloom as a general ripening interval, but variety and growing conditions affect the timing. Treat it as an estimate, not a guarantee for each berry. Penn State Extension describes the approximate interval and fully colored fruit as the practical sign.
When to check and pick
Home gardens
Once berries begin turning red, look through the plants every day. Fruit can reach full ripeness quickly, and checking regularly lets you pick it at its best rather than leaving ripe berries exposed.

Season varies by region and crop type
In Minnesota, June-bearing strawberries are harvested over roughly 3–6 weeks, from mid-June to mid-July. Day-neutral plants there can produce from early July into fall, potentially through October under tunnel production. These are Minnesota examples, not dates that apply everywhere; location, cultivar, weather, and growing system all affect the season. University of Minnesota Extension outlines the regional harvest season and crop schedules.
Commercial picking intervals
For commercial production, the University of Minnesota describes harvests every 1–3 days for June-bearing and day-neutral crops. Growers may pick more often during hot weather or when spotted-wing drosophila pressure is high. These production recommendations are useful context, but they are not a required schedule for every home garden.

How to pick without bruising berries
- Wait until the plants have dried in the morning, if practical.
- Lift and handle fruit gently to avoid bruises and wounds; retain the green caps when picking.
- Collect berries in an ordinary shallow container, bucket, cardboard flat, or pint- or quart-size container. Specialized equipment is not necessary.
- Keep the harvest out of direct sunlight while picking and transporting it.
Penn State Extension recommends retaining caps and keeping fruit out of direct sun, while the University of Minnesota advises careful handling to prevent damage. Neither source prescribes a single finger placement or stem-snapping motion, so use a gentle touch rather than forcing a particular technique. Refrigerate strawberries as soon as possible. Do not wash them until just before eating or using them, and keep them shaded during collection and transport. Strawberries do not continue to ripen after they are picked, so leave fruit with white areas on the plant until it is fully colored.
