The sustainable design proposed in May 2024 for Baltimore’s collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge was a preliminary cable-stayed concept—not the replacement design Maryland later advanced. Webuild, Carlo Ratti Associati and structural engineer Michel Virlogeux presented a 2,230-foot main span, six lanes and features such as solar panels. Maryland’s Transportation Authority’s 2026 materials describe a different official project, with a 1,665-foot main span and four lanes.
What did the 2024 proposal show?
In a May 8, 2024 photo story, Interesting Engineering reported that Webuild, Carlo Ratti Associati and structural engineer Michel Virlogeux had presented a preliminary concept for a replacement after the bridge collapsed. The article said the proposal was still awaiting approval. Its description is a record of what the team proposed at that time, not evidence that Maryland approved or built those features. Interesting Engineering’s May 2024 report includes the design images.
- A 2,230-foot (700-meter) main span: The article compared this with a 1,200-foot (365-meter) main span for the collapsed bridge.
- Six lanes: The proposed bridge would have six lanes, compared with four on the former bridge.
- Piers outside the navigation channel: The concept proposed positioning support pillars away from the channel and avoiding artificial islands.
- Solar panels and “smart features”: These were described as elements of the concept; the report did not establish their final design or implementation.
The article characterized cable-stayed construction as material-efficient and lower-carbon, but supplied no quantified lifecycle analysis or measured emissions result. Those sustainability points should therefore be understood as qualitative claims about the proposal, not verified performance outcomes.
How does it compare with Maryland’s official replacement design?
Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) board materials from January 2026 describe a separate official replacement project. The specifications differ from the 2024 concept, including in span length and lane count.

| Feature | 2024 proposal, as reported | MDTA official project, January 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Main span | 2,230 feet (700 meters), per Interesting Engineering’s May 2024 report. | 1,665 feet, per MDTA board materials. |
| Back spans | Not stated in the Interesting Engineering report. | 850 feet, per MDTA board materials. |
| Lanes | Six, per Interesting Engineering’s May 2024 report. | Four 12-foot travel lanes, per MDTA board materials. |
| Navigation clearance and pier protection | The proposal described piers positioned away from the navigation channel; a numerical clearance is not stated in the Interesting Engineering report. | Minimum 230-foot vertical clearance and minimum 1,100-foot horizontal clearance between pier protection around the main-span piers, per MDTA board materials. |
| Status | Preliminary concept reported as awaiting approval in May 2024. | Official project specifications in January 2026 board materials; MDTA later began procurement for the main-span and marine approaches. |
| Sustainability evidence | Qualitative claims; no quantified emissions or lifecycle result reported. | Not stated in the cited January 2026 materials. |
The figures describe different designs at different stages, so the 2024 proposal’s span and lane count should not be presented as specifications for the state’s replacement. MDTA’s January 2026 board materials provide the official project dimensions.
Was the 2024 concept approved?
The May 2024 report said the concept was awaiting approval. MDTA announced a Request for Qualifications on July 21, 2026, beginning a two-step competition to select a design-build team for the official project’s main-span and marine-approaches construction contract. That milestone confirms active procurement for the state project; the available official sources do not establish whether MDTA formally adopted or rejected the earlier concept, or incorporated any of its features. See MDTA’s July 21, 2026 procurement announcement.

What is known about the project’s delivery and cost?
MDTA’s FY2025 annual financial report describes progressive design-build delivery and estimates the rebuild at $4.3 billion to $5.2 billion. This is the agency’s dated estimate, not a final cost. The report does not make that range a cost estimate for the separate 2024 concept. MDTA’s FY2025 annual report provides the delivery and estimate details.

The 2024 concept paired a cable-stayed form with proposed solar panels and smart features, and its report described the approach as material-efficient and lower-carbon. The consulted reporting and official project documents do not provide a named, published statistic establishing emissions reductions, material savings, ecological impact or measured performance for that concept. Without quantified evidence, those statements describe the proposal’s intended benefits rather than demonstrated outcomes.
