The Philips OLED+909 is a luxury all-in-one television for buyers who want flagship OLED picture quality, unusually powerful built-in audio and Ambilight without adding a separate soundbar. Its second-generation MLA-type OLED panel produces an exceptionally bright, vivid HDR image, while the integrated Bowers & Wilkins 3.1 system delivers clear dialogue, substantial bass and a broad front soundstage.
It is not perfect. Shadow detail can disappear in very dark scenes, only two of its four HDMI inputs are HDMI 2.1, and the Google TV experience—and UK catch-up app support in the tested configuration—is less polished than the hardware deserves. The OLED+909 is therefore best for a specific kind of buyer: someone who wants a dramatic, elegant living-room centrepiece rather than the most flexible home-cinema display.
Philips OLED+909: quick verdict
| Best for | Premium TV buyers who want excellent built-in sound and Ambilight |
|---|---|
| Biggest strengths | Bright HDR picture, four-sided Ambilight, Bowers & Wilkins audio |
| Main weaknesses | Two HDMI 2.1 ports, occasional black crush, imperfect smart-TV integration |
| Choose it if | You want one premium unit instead of a TV plus soundbar |
| Look elsewhere if | You need full surround sound, maximum HDMI flexibility or the cleanest app experience |
The OLED+909 makes the most sense when its three defining features—brightness, Ambilight and integrated audio—are all valuable to you. If you already own a good soundbar or AV system, much of what justifies its premium positioning becomes less important.
The original UK launch prices reported by T3 were £1,999 for 55 inches, £2,799 for 65 inches and £4,449 for 77 inches. Those are historical launch prices, not live September 2026 pricing. Availability also appears increasingly dependent on region and remaining stock, with Philips now promoting newer OLED+ models such as the OLED+910.

What is the Philips OLED+909?
The OLED+909 is Philips’ premium 2024-generation OLED television. In the UK and European launch context it was offered in 55-, 65- and 77-inch sizes, although exact size availability depends on country and model suffix.
Its specification combines:
- An OLED panel using second-generation META/MLA technology.
- Philips’ 8th-generation P5 AI picture processor, as identified in the T3 review.
- Google TV.
- Four-sided Ambilight.
- An integrated Bowers & Wilkins 3.1 audio system.
Philips’ official product naming uses OLED+909, with model numbers such as 65OLED909/12 and 77OLED909/12. The regional suffix matters: a UK or European /12 model should not automatically be assumed to have identical tuners, apps, software or availability in another country. Check the exact local product page and manual before buying.
Picture quality: bright, colourful and cinematic
The OLED+909’s biggest technical upgrade is its brighter panel. Philips describes it as a second-generation META OLED display, while T3 refers to it as a second-generation MLA-type OLED. Philips and product-generation material promote a claimed peak figure of up to 3,000 nits, with T3 reporting a 42% increase over the OLED908.
That number needs context. It is a manufacturer or technical peak claim rather than a promise of 3,000 nits across the whole screen during ordinary viewing. In practice, the extra headroom is most useful for small HDR highlights: sunlight flashing off metal, explosions, bright reflections and specular detail in games. It also helps the television retain impact in a room with daylight.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteT3 found the image rich, high-contrast and deliberately punchy. This is not the most restrained, reference-monitor presentation by default. Films, sport and games have a theatrical energy, with saturated colour and bright highlights making the picture immediately impressive.
HDR and bright-room viewing
OLED’s pixel-level black control remains valuable in a dark room, but the OLED+909’s brightness makes it more versatile in a mixed or bright living room than a dimmer OLED. HDR content has greater visual impact, and the picture is less easily overwhelmed by ambient light.
Philips lists support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ Adaptive and HLG on its OLED range overview. Format support can vary with the exact regional model, so confirm the specification for the television sold in your market.
Dark scenes and black crush
The principal picture-quality reservation is occasional black crush. OLED blacks can remain genuinely black while nearby shadow detail is lost, making dark clothing, dim interiors or night-time textures merge into a flat area.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
This is not necessarily a fault with every source or every viewing mode. It can be influenced by processing, picture presets and the room. However, buyers who are particularly sensitive to near-black detail should compare the OLED+909 with processing-focused alternatives such as Sony’s A95L or a premium Panasonic OLED.
Picture settings worth experimenting with
The television includes processing controls such as Dark Detail Optimisation, Light Level Optimisation, Colour Temperature Optimisation and HDR Optimisation. They can be useful, but there is no universally correct setting.
- Dark Detail Optimisation: can reveal more shadow information, but raising shadow detail may also make grain and compression artefacts more obvious.
- HDR Optimisation: can increase the perceived impact of HDR, but T3 observed visible brightness changes between scenes when it was active.
- Film viewing: start with the least processed cinema-oriented mode, then adjust only what you can identify as a problem.
- Bright rooms: a brighter preset may be practical in daylight, even if it is less faithful to the mastering environment.
- Gaming: use the appropriate Game mode and test HDR and VRR with the actual console or PC you intend to use.
The best approach is to make one change at a time. If a dark scene looks too flat, moderate contrast enhancement and investigate shadow-detail controls rather than simply raising overall brightness.
Four-sided Ambilight: a real reason to choose Philips
Ambilight projects colours from the top, bottom and sides of the television onto the wall behind it. On the OLED+909, all four edges are illuminated, creating a halo that follows the content.
It can make the picture feel larger and more immersive, particularly with films, sport and games. It is also a genuine differentiator: LG, Sony and Samsung do not offer an equivalent integrated system.
Ambilight works best when the television is wall-mounted against a relatively plain, light-coloured wall. Philips itself says wall mounting delivers the full impact of four-sided Ambilight. A textured or strongly coloured wall can weaken or distort the effect, while bright room lighting may compete with the projected colours.
The feature is subjective. Some viewers find the changing light relaxing and immersive; others prefer a distraction-free, calibrated cinema image. Reduce the intensity or choose a less reactive mode before dismissing it. For critical film viewing, switching it off is perfectly reasonable. It is not a substitute for neutral bias lighting if your aim is consistent, colour-accurate backlighting.
Bowers & Wilkins sound: can it replace a soundbar?
Yes—for many buyers, it can replace a basic or mid-range soundbar. The OLED+909’s integrated audio is one of its strongest reasons to exist.

Philips describes a slim Bowers & Wilkins system with nine front-firing drivers, a dedicated centre channel and a rear-mounted subwoofer. Philips’ OLED range overview lists the OLED+ audio system as an 80W/3.1 configuration. The exact specification should be checked against the regional model label.
T3 reported a substantial improvement over the OLED809, with clear dialogue, significant bass and a wide presentation. Voices remain intelligible, films have more weight than they do through ordinary television speakers, and the front soundstage is convincing for an integrated system.
Where the built-in system wins
- It avoids the cost and visual clutter of a separate soundbar.
- The dedicated centre channel helps dialogue remain clear.
- The integrated subwoofer provides more authority than typical slim-TV speakers.
- It is a particularly good fit for open-plan rooms where a full speaker system would be intrusive.
Where it cannot compete
Dolby Atmos support does not create the same physical separation as rear speakers and ceiling or upward-firing channels. The OLED+909 can produce a wide and engaging front presentation, but it cannot match a separate AV receiver and speaker system for rear-channel envelopment, overhead effects or future upgradeability.
Already owning a premium soundbar or surround system changes the value calculation. In that situation, a less expensive picture-focused OLED may be the better purchase, especially if you will disable the television’s speakers.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGaming performance and HDMI planning
The OLED+909 supports 4K gaming at up to 144Hz in compatible PC configurations. Philips specifically lists HDMI VRR, G-Sync and FreeSync support for PC gaming, and T3 reported automatic Game Mode detection plus particularly impressive brightness and colour from PlayStation 5 games.
For console buyers, remember that current consoles generally target up to 4K/120Hz rather than 4K/144Hz. The 144Hz capability is primarily useful with a compatible gaming PC, suitable graphics hardware and the right cable.
The important limitation is connectivity: T3 identifies four HDMI inputs, of which two are HDMI 2.1. That is enough for many households, but not every setup.
Example connection plans
- One console plus eARC sound system: straightforward; connect the console to an HDMI 2.1 input and the audio device to eARC.
- PS5 plus Xbox Series X: both can use the two HDMI 2.1 inputs, leaving little flexibility for another high-bandwidth source.
- PS5, Xbox, gaming PC and eARC: plan carefully. You may need to move a device, use a compatible AV receiver or consider an HDMI switch that genuinely supports the required gaming features.
HDMI 2.1 on a specification sheet is not a guarantee that every feature works on every input in every combination. Confirm the port, source, cable and settings, then test VRR, HDR, ALLM and eARC together rather than assuming they will all operate simultaneously.

No independent input-lag measurement is supplied in the dossier, so the OLED+909 should not be given a made-up latency figure.
Google TV and app limitations
The television uses Google TV, but T3 found Philips’ own menus and Google’s interface imperfectly integrated. Some remote commands reportedly produced a “feature not available in current mode” message.
More importantly for UK buyers, the tested configuration lacked integrated UK catch-up services. That is a meaningful drawback if you expect the television to handle live broadcast and catch-up viewing without another device.
This criticism is geographically specific. App availability, tuners and software behaviour vary by country and model suffix; the UK finding should not automatically be applied to every market.

An Apple TV, Roku, Google TV streamer, Fire TV device, set-top box or games console can provide a workaround. The trade-offs are another box, another remote, additional cost and one more HDMI connection—an especially relevant consideration when only two inputs are HDMI 2.1.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Design, weight and installation
The integrated speaker hardware makes the OLED+909 heavier than a conventional thin OLED. T3 says the tested 65-inch model weighed just under 25kg.
The television uses two feet rather than the older model’s central swivelling stand. This has practical consequences:
- Measure the width and depth of your furniture before choosing the feet position.
- Do not assume the screen can rotate on its stand; the review says the OLED+909 cannot swivel like the previous design.
- Check whether the speaker bar sits in front of a low media console or an existing centre speaker.
- Allow for two-person handling when installing a 65- or 77-inch model.
- Wall-mounting hardware was not supplied according to the review. Use a VESA-compatible mount rated for the exact television’s dimensions and weight.
- Leave access to HDMI and eARC connections if the set will be mounted close to the wall.
Wall mounting is particularly attractive because it improves the four-sided Ambilight effect, but it also makes cable access and safe installation more important.

OLED+909 versus the alternatives
| Alternative | Choose it when… | Why choose the Philips instead? |
|---|---|---|
| LG OLED G4 | You want a premium OLED and are happy to add a soundbar or surround system. | The Philips has stronger integrated audio and unique Ambilight. |
| Philips OLED+809 | You want Ambilight at a lower tier and can accept less brightness and less ambitious sound. | The OLED+909 has the brighter MLA panel, four-sided Ambilight and more powerful audio. |
| Sony A95L | You prioritise refined processing and near-black detail over Ambilight. | The Philips is more theatrical and includes much stronger built-in sound. |
| Panasonic premium OLED | You prefer filmmaker-oriented modes and a cinema-focused calibration approach. | The Philips offers a brighter, more colourful presentation and Ambilight. |
| Samsung QD-OLED | You want vivid colour and do not require Dolby Vision or Philips’ audio system. | The Philips combines Dolby Vision support, Ambilight and Bowers & Wilkins sound. |
Competitor model names, sizes and prices change by market and year, so compare the exact contemporary model rather than relying on an old launch-price chart. The T3 review specifically points buyers who want separate audio toward the LG OLED G4, and identifies the Sony A95L for those who do not need Ambilight and value black-level processing.
Which size should you buy?
55 inches
The 55-inch version is the most practical choice for a smaller room, narrower furniture or a shorter viewing distance. Its integrated sound remains useful, but the smaller screen has less visual impact than the larger models.
65 inches
The 65-inch model is the most balanced option for many living rooms: large enough to show the benefit of HDR and Ambilight without demanding the wall space or budget of the 77-inch version. Remember that the audio hardware contributes to its near-25kg weight.
77 inches
The 77-inch model suits a larger room and a longer viewing distance, particularly if the television is wall-mounted. Measure the wall, furniture and access route carefully. A large OLED with integrated audio is not a casual one-person delivery or installation project.

Ownership considerations
The OLED+909’s integrated audio may remove the need to buy a soundbar, but the real cost can include a wall mount, professional installation, delivery, cable management and possibly an external streaming device.
As with any OLED, consider how you will use the television. Static logos, news tickers, desktop interfaces and prolonged gaming HUDs are relevant long-term considerations. Do not assume immunity from image retention or burn-in; review the manufacturer’s panel-protection features and warranty terms, and vary content if the screen will display static elements for long periods.
Who should buy the Philips OLED+909?
Buy it if:
- You want premium OLED picture quality without a separate soundbar.
- You like Ambilight and can place the set against a suitable wall.
- You watch HDR films, sport and games in a bright or mixed-light room.
- You want Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support, subject to your regional specification.
- You have two or fewer HDMI 2.1 sources, or have a well-planned connection system.
- You prefer a vivid, dramatic presentation to the most restrained reference image.
Avoid it if:
- You need three or four HDMI 2.1 sources connected at once.
- You already own a high-end soundbar or surround system.
- You want the cleanest smart-TV interface and complete UK catch-up support in the television itself.
- You are highly sensitive to crushed shadow detail.
- You want convincing rear and overhead Atmos effects from the television alone.
- You need a conventional lightweight OLED or a swivelling stand.
If OLED+909 stock is old or scarce, compare its price and warranty with Philips’ newer OLED+910 before buying. A discounted 909 can be excellent value when the discount is substantial; it is harder to justify when it costs close to a newer model.
