Philips Hue raised U.S. prices on July 1, 2025—and warned tariffs could drive further increases

Philips Hue’s U.S. price increase took effect July 1, 2025. Signify blamed tariffs and left open the possibility of more changes, but did not publish one universal increase percentage.

Philips Hue’s U.S. price increase took effect on July 1, 2025. Signify, the company behind Hue, attributed the change to tariffs and said it reserved the right to adjust prices again if new or additional tariffs took effect. That is a historical increase—not a newly announced July 2026 hike—and the available announcement did not specify one percentage increase for every product.

What Signify announced

The announcement covered the U.S. Philips Hue portfolio, not just individual light bulbs. That potentially includes bulbs, light strips, lamps, fixtures, switches, sensors, hubs and entertainment products. The effective date was July 1, 2025.

Signify cited tariffs as the direct reason for the increase. Contemporary reporting discussed a possible 125% tariff rate on goods imported from China, with a July 9, 2025 implementation date being considered at the time. That figure should not be treated as a universal tariff on every Hue product: applicable rates depend on factors such as country of origin, product classification, exemptions and import route. Ars Technica’s report attributed the explanation to Signify; it did not independently calculate the tariff’s effect on each product.

There was no single documented percentage increase

The available report did not publish a complete before-and-after U.S. price list. It therefore does not support claims that every Hue bulb rose by the same percentage—or that every item in the portfolio changed by the same dollar amount.

  • EXPAND YOUR SETUP: Add a Hue Bridge and other Hue products to unlock more features, including home security and content syncing with music, movies, and video games

Different products can be affected differently. A bulb, a light strip, a Smart Button, a Bridge, a fixture and a TV-sync product may have different manufacturing costs, supply chains, tariff classifications and retail pricing. A portfolio-wide announcement is not the same thing as a uniform product-level increase.

The report gave historical comparisons including a Smart Button listed at $33 in the U.S. versus €22 in Europe, and a Hue Play wall washer listed at $220 in the U.S. versus €200 in Europe. Those figures are not a complete July 2025 price table. U.S. prices generally exclude sales tax, European prices commonly include VAT, exchange rates change, and regional models, packaging or warranties may differ.

Could there have been another increase?

Signify’s wording left open that possibility if “new or additional tariffs” became effective. That was a conditional warning, not confirmation that a second across-the-board increase occurred.

Future pricing could also be influenced by country of manufacture, component and shipping costs, retailer decisions, currency movements, exemptions and changes to tariff policy. The available evidence does not establish a later universal Hue price increase or prove that tariffs accounted for every dollar of the 2025 adjustment.

Why Hue costs more than many alternatives

Hue’s premium is not limited to the bulb itself. The ecosystem includes a broad selection of bulbs, fixtures, outdoor lighting, strips, switches, sensors and entertainment products. It also offers mature scenes and automations, voice-assistant and smart-home integrations, and a long product history that can matter to people expanding an existing installation.

Some products support direct Bluetooth control. A Hue Bridge can unlock broader capabilities for larger installations and more advanced automation, but it adds to the initial cost. Do not assume every Hue product supports Bluetooth or that every feature works without a Bridge; check the individual product listing.

Account and software considerations are separate from hardware pricing. Some cloud-connected features require a Hue account. Hue introduced an AI assistant in its app in 2025, reported as free at the time. TV-sync software and hardware can add substantially to the total cost; contemporary reporting cited $130 for a one-TV software unlock or $3 per month. Those optional entertainment costs do not mean ordinary bulb operation universally requires a subscription.

Should you buy Hue?

Existing Hue owners

Staying with Hue is often the simplest choice when you already own a Bridge, switches, sensors or multiple bulbs. Replacing an established system means recreating scenes and automations and potentially replacing proprietary accessories. Compare the current price of the exact replacement or expansion product with the cost of migrating the whole room or home.

First-time buyers

If you need one or two bulbs for basic dimming or color control, start by checking whether a Bluetooth-capable Hue bulb meets the requirement. You may not need a Bridge immediately. A cheaper ecosystem may offer similar basic control at a lower upfront cost, but it may not match Hue’s accessories, product range, automation behavior or entertainment integrations.

Whole-home installations

Calculate total system cost rather than multiplying a single-bulb price. Include bulbs, a Bridge or other hub, switches, sensors, fixtures and replacements. Hue’s ecosystem depth may justify the premium if you value continuity and advanced automation; it is harder to justify if you only need inexpensive white light.

TV and gaming setups

Hue’s entertainment lighting can be a reason to stay within the ecosystem, but the Sync Box and related software can cost more than the lights themselves. Price the complete setup before buying a starter kit that does not include the hardware or software you actually need.

Alternatives to consider

Lower-cost or differently designed ecosystems may be a better fit, but none should automatically be treated as a drop-in replacement or tariff-free option.

  • WiZ: A Signify-related lighting brand that may suit buyers seeking a less expensive setup, but it is not identical to Hue and should not be assumed to support Hue accessories or entertainment features.
  • Govee: Worth considering for decorative lighting, strips and app-driven effects, especially when upfront cost matters more than a Hue-style whole-home ecosystem.
  • Nanoleaf: A design-focused option with panels, strips and Matter-oriented products, but not necessarily the broadest conventional bulb-and-fixture range.
  • IKEA smart lighting: Potentially attractive for accessible hardware pricing, with a more limited product range and ecosystem than Hue.

When comparing products, match like with like: color bulb against color bulb, single bulb against single bulb, and hub-based features against hub-based features. Also check local versus cloud control, Matter support, app quality, accessory compatibility and the cost of any required hub.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Identify the exact bulb, fixture or accessory you need.
  2. Check whether it supports Bluetooth and which features require a Bridge.
  3. Compare the full setup cost, including hubs, switches, sensors and sync hardware.
  4. Separate a temporary sale price from the listed price.
  5. Check the retailer’s return window in case the product is discounted later.
  6. Confirm whether an item is being replaced or discontinued.
  7. Decide whether Hue’s scenes, accessories, outdoor range or entertainment features justify the premium.

The bottom line

The July 1, 2025 U.S. Hue increase was real, and Signify blamed tariffs. But the available reporting did not establish a universal percentage or a product-by-product total, and its warning about further increases was conditional. For existing Hue owners, ecosystem continuity may outweigh the price premium. For new buyers who need only basic lighting, compare the total cost and capabilities of cheaper ecosystems before paying for a Bridge or advanced Hue hardware.
