Philips Hue Bridge Pro, Essential Bulbs and Festavia: What Changed and What to Buy

Philips Hue’s 2025 refresh added Bridge Pro, Essential bulbs, OmniGlow, Festavia outdoor lighting and Hue Secure. Here is what changed and what buyers should choose in 2026.

Signify’s September 4, 2025 Philips Hue refresh was much broader than a new Bridge. It introduced the Bridge Pro, lower-cost Essential bulbs, updated A19 bulbs, the diffused OmniGlow light strip, new Festavia outdoor products, Hue Secure hardware and a Sonos Voice Control integration.

The most important buying point in 2026 is simple: Bridge Pro is not a necessary upgrade for every Hue owner. Its strongest reasons to buy are higher capacity, MotionAware, and compatibility with some newer Festavia products. Prices and stock have also changed since the launch announcement, so the figures below distinguish launch claims from U.S. catalog information checked on August 16, 2026.

The short version

Product What it adds U.S. price or status
Hue Bridge Pro 150+ lights, 50+ accessories, MotionAware and higher system capacity $139.99 on Philips Hue’s current U.S. product page
Essential A19 and BR30 bulbs Lower-cost entry into the Hue ecosystem Essential BR30 listed at $24.99
Updated A19 bulbs Improved daylight reproduction, dimming and claimed efficiency Launch pricing started at $54.99; pack pricing varies
OmniGlow Diffused strip lighting designed to reduce visible LED dots $139.99 for a current 10-foot model
Festavia globe strings Decorative full-color outdoor string lighting From $179.99 for 22 feet
Festavia permanent lights Year-round roofline and eave lighting From $399.99 for 90 feet
Hue Secure wired doorbell 2K video, two-way audio and Hue-light reactions $169.99 listed; requires existing low-voltage wiring
Smart Chime Indoor audible alerts for the Hue doorbell $60 launch price; verify current price

For a small, reliable Hue installation, keeping the original Bridge is usually sensible. For a large installation, a multi-Bridge setup, MotionAware, or a Festavia product that explicitly requires Bridge Pro, the upgrade is much easier to justify.

Some products were available around the announcement, while others were scheduled for later release. Current pricing and stock should therefore be checked on the individual Philips Hue product page rather than inferred from the launch announcement. The original launch coverage is useful for announced specifications, while Philips Hue’s current Bridge Pro page and product catalogs are more relevant to present-day buying decisions.

Bridge Pro: what actually improves

More capacity

Philips Hue currently says Bridge Pro supports more than 150 lights and 50 accessories. The previous Bridge was commonly described as supporting about 50 lights. That difference matters most in whole-home installations, large properties, extensive outdoor lighting systems and homes with many sensors, switches and other accessories.

Owners who previously divided a large installation across multiple Bridges may be able to consolidate it. That can simplify control and automation, although migration still involves moving the existing system rather than merely plugging in a new box.

More processing power and scenes

Signify’s launch specifications, reported by MacRumors, described a processor five times more powerful, 15 times more memory and support for up to 500 custom lighting scenes. These figures should be understood as launch specifications attributed to Signify, not as a promise that every small installation will feel faster in everyday use.

MotionAware

MotionAware is Bridge Pro’s most distinctive feature. It uses changes in the Zigbee signal behavior between Hue devices to infer motion, rather than relying solely on a dedicated motion sensor.

At launch, Signify said MotionAware required at least three eligible Hue lights in a room. The reported compatibility covered bulbs and fixtures made after 2014, but excluded portable Hue devices and Hue Smart Plugs. It is therefore better viewed as a room-level signal-based motion feature than as a universal replacement for motion or presence sensors.

Smart-home compatibility

Philips Hue lists Bridge Pro compatibility with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Samsung SmartThings. That is ordinary Hue lighting compatibility; it should not be confused with Hue Secure compatibility. The 2025 launch coverage reported that Hue Secure products were not HomeKit-compatible and were controlled through the Hue app.

Should existing Hue owners upgrade?

Use this decision test before buying Bridge Pro:

  1. Are you near or beyond 50 lights? Bridge Pro is substantially more compelling if the original capacity is becoming a constraint.
  2. Are you using multiple Bridges? Consolidating a large installation may be a practical reason to upgrade.
  3. Do you want MotionAware? Bridge Pro is required for that feature.
  4. Are you buying a Festavia product that requires Bridge Pro? Add the Bridge to the project budget before comparing prices.
  5. Is your system small and stable? If so, the existing Bridge may continue to be sufficient.

Philips Hue said existing customers could upgrade with a few clicks. Anecdotal MacRumors forum reports described one migration taking roughly 15–20 minutes, while reconnecting the system to Apple Home reportedly required additional attempts. That is a user experience report, not a guaranteed migration procedure.

Bridge Pro’s launch price was $98.99, but Philips Hue’s U.S. product page listed it at $139.99 during the August 16, 2026 research check. The launch price should not be used as current buying advice.

Essential bulbs versus standard Hue bulbs

Essential is Philips Hue’s lower-cost product tier. The initial range included A19 and BR30 bulbs, with Bluetooth control and additional functionality available through a Hue Bridge.

  • WHAT’S IN THE BOX: Includes one Hue Bridge and two Hue white and color ambiance LED smart 60W A19 E26 base light bulbs suitable for most fixtures; perfect for general lighting anywhere in your home
  • UNLOCK THE POWER OF THE HUE BRIDGE: Enjoy automations, control from anywhere, a secure, stable connection that won’t drain Wi-Fi, use Matter to connect your devices to your Hue smart lighting system

  • VOICE CONTROL: Set up voice control in the Hue app and use simple voice commands to control your Hue lights with Alexa or Google Assistant

The important qualification is that Essential is not simply a premium Hue bulb at a lower price. Launch coverage identified compromises including less aggressive low-end dimming, a narrower white-light spectrum and no Chromasync premium color-matching technology.

Priority Better choice
Lowest-cost entry into Hue Essential
Basic white smart lighting Essential
Precise color matching Standard Hue
Deep bedroom or nighttime dimming Standard Hue
TV and entertainment scenes Standard Hue
Large installation where cost matters Essential in utility spaces, premium Hue in visible rooms

Essential makes sense for first-time Hue buyers, utility rooms, rentals where sophisticated color performance is unnecessary, and large installations where using premium color bulbs everywhere would become expensive. Standard Hue remains the better choice for home theaters, entertainment areas, color-critical spaces and bedrooms where very low dimming matters.

Philips Hue’s catalog listed an Essential BR30 at $24.99 during the research check. An Essential A19 four-pack also appeared in the catalog, but pack-specific pricing should be confirmed on the individual product page.

Updated A19 bulbs and connection standards

The updated A19 models emphasize better daylight reproduction, improved dimming and approximately 40% better efficiency, according to Signify’s announcement. The range includes 60W- through 100W-equivalent options.

The announcement also described Matter over Thread, Zigbee and Bluetooth connectivity for the latest Essential and A19 products. Those protocols are not interchangeable from a feature perspective:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Bluetooth can provide basic nearby control without a Bridge.
  • Zigbee through a Hue Bridge supports the established Hue ecosystem, automations and centralized control.
  • Matter over Thread can improve interoperability with compatible Matter ecosystems, but it does not automatically reproduce every advanced Hue feature available through the Hue Bridge and app.

The announcement listed updated A19 pricing from $54.99, while Philips Hue catalog results showed at least one 60W A19 two-pack at $48.99 during the research pass. The difference may reflect pack configuration, later pricing or catalog changes.

OmniGlow: a visible light strip rather than hidden accent lighting

OmniGlow is designed for installations where the strip itself can be seen. Its diffusion reduces the individual LED-dot effect that is common with exposed light strips, allowing it to function as a more continuous source of light for direct or indirect applications.

Philips Hue’s current U.S. catalog lists a 10-foot OmniGlow model at $139.99, with up to 2,700 lumens, smooth effects and bright white-light output.

A launch report described the product as costing $139.99 for 40 meters. That measurement conflicts with the current official 10-foot listing and appears to be a malformed or unreliable specification. Buyers should use the current product page for dimensions, kit contents and any extension information rather than assuming a 40-meter run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before installation, confirm whether the selected package includes the required controller, power supply and mounting hardware, and whether extensions or separate bases are needed. OmniGlow is most attractive when diffusion and high brightness matter more than the lowest cost per foot. Ordinary Hue strips and cheaper third-party alternatives may be better for concealed cabinet lighting or long runs on a strict budget.

Festavia outdoor lighting

Permanent outdoor lights

Festavia permanent lights target rooflines, eaves and façades. Current U.S. listings show 90-foot versions from $399.99 and 150-foot versions from $599.99. A listed 150-foot white model has 80 lights, up to 50 lumens per light, IP65 weather resistance and white and color-gradient effects.

At least some current Festavia permanent products explicitly require Bridge Pro. Philips Hue’s current 150-foot product page identifies that requirement, so the real system cost may be the light kit plus a $139.99 Bridge Pro rather than the advertised light price alone.

Globe string lights

Current U.S. globe-string listings include:

Length Bulbs Listed price
22 feet 8 $179.99
45 feet 16 $229.99
91 feet 32 $379.99

The globe products use 50-lumen replaceable bulbs, include a low-voltage power supply and are positioned for indoor and outdoor use. Philips Hue lists a full-spectrum range of 1,000–20,000K. The 91-foot model was temporarily out of stock during the research check, so availability should be confirmed immediately before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outdoor installation cautions

  • IP65 is not submersion protection. Do not treat the rating as permission to place every component underwater.
  • Plan power access, mounting points, cable routing and seasonal maintenance before installing permanent lighting.
  • Confirm whether sections are cuttable, extendable or individually replaceable.
  • Integrated outdoor systems can be harder to repair than conventional fixtures using standard replaceable bulbs.
  • Check the product warranty and replacement policy before committing to a long roofline installation.

Festavia is a good fit when coordinated color scenes, Hue automations and a polished installation justify the premium. Conventional outdoor fixtures or standard string lights are more practical when low cost, easy repair and replaceable parts matter most.

Hue Secure doorbell and Smart Chime

Hue Secure adds a wired video doorbell and Smart Chime to the Hue portfolio. The doorbell can trigger Hue-light responses when it detects a visitor or when its button is pressed.

Current catalog information describes the doorbell as offering 2K video, two-way audio and day-and-night vision. The listed price is $169.99. It requires 12–24V AC and a minimum 10VA transformer; the transformer is not included. That makes it a poor fit for renters or homes without suitable existing low-voltage doorbell wiring.

The Smart Chime launched at $60. Confirm its current price separately because launch pricing and catalog pricing can change.

Do not confuse Hue Secure with normal Hue compatibility

Hue Secure is a separate security ecosystem. MacRumors reported that Hue Secure products were not HomeKit-compatible and were controlled through the Hue app. That is a major distinction for Apple households expecting HomeKit Secure Video or broad camera integration.

Signify announced free 24-hour video history later in 2025, smoke-alarm recognition that could trigger lights and an AI facial-recognition feature planned for 2026. These should be treated as announced policy or roadmap claims unless a current official support page confirms that the relevant feature is available in the buyer’s region and under the buyer’s plan.

Before purchasing, verify current subscription terms, video-storage limits, privacy controls, platform compatibility and whether the doorbell’s wiring requirements match the property.

Hue, Matter, Apple Home, voice assistants and Sonos

The announcement combines several kinds of interoperability that should be kept separate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Hue Bridge and Hue app: The fullest route into Hue scenes, automations and accessory management.
  • Bluetooth: Useful for basic nearby control, but not a substitute for every Bridge feature.
  • Zigbee: The principal Hue lighting network used with the Bridge.
  • Matter over Thread: Can provide broader interoperability with compatible Matter ecosystems, subject to the capabilities of the specific platform and device.
  • Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings: Listed by Philips Hue as compatible with Bridge Pro lighting.
  • Hue Secure: Must be evaluated separately because its platform support is more limited than ordinary Hue lighting support.
  • Sonos Voice Control: Signify announced that Sonos Voice Control users would be able to operate Philips Hue lights with voice commands. Availability may vary by device, region, language and supported Hue function.

Who should buy what?

Keep the original Bridge

Keep it if your installation is modest, reliable and well below the previous capacity limit; you do not need MotionAware; and you are not buying a product that requires Bridge Pro.

Buy Bridge Pro

Buy it if you have more than roughly 50 lights, use multiple Bridges, want MotionAware, need a larger centralized scene and accessory capacity, or are purchasing a Festavia product whose product page requires Bridge Pro.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Essential

Choose Essential for utility rooms, basic white lighting, first-time Hue ownership or large projects where premium bulbs would push the budget too high. Use standard Hue bulbs in rooms where color quality, precise matching or deep dimming matters.

Choose OmniGlow

Choose OmniGlow when the light strip will be visible and smooth diffusion is worth the premium. Confirm the actual length and included hardware; do not rely on the questionable 40-meter launch wording.

Choose Festavia

Choose Festavia when integrated Hue scenes, gradient effects and a polished outdoor installation justify the cost. Include Bridge Pro in the budget where required, and plan the electrical and mounting work before ordering.

Consider Hue Secure cautiously

Hue Secure is most suitable for existing Hue households that specifically want doorbell or camera events to trigger lights. It is less attractive for buyers who prioritize HomeKit Secure Video, wireless installation, mature security-camera features, broad third-party compatibility or clearly defined long-term subscription costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Philips Hue’s refresh is a portfolio expansion, not a universal replacement cycle. Bridge Pro is the meaningful upgrade for large systems, MotionAware users and buyers of certain new Festavia products. Essential bulbs lower the entry price but make real compromises in dimming, white-light range and color matching. OmniGlow addresses visible LED dots, while Festavia brings Hue’s premium ecosystem outdoors at a substantial installation cost. Hue Secure is best treated as a separate security purchase whose wiring and platform limitations deserve careful checking before installation.
