The result is a Wi-Fi-connected, browser-controlled LED matrix that can show drawings, images, animations, clocks, weather, and simple games.
It is an impressive maker project, but not a plug-in smart-light upgrade. You must open a riveted enclosure, remove or bypass the original controller, solder new wiring, flash firmware, and account for a potential 3.3-volt-to-5-volt logic-level mismatch. It is best suited to experienced hobbyists who already own—or can obtain—the lamp and are comfortable modifying hardware.

What the original OBEGRÄNSAD lamp is
The OBEGRÄNSAD is a black LED wall lamp from IKEA’s collaboration with Swedish House Mafia. Its face is made from four LED matrix plates, creating the distinctive chunky-pixel appearance. In its stock configuration, it offers five built-in lighting programs controlled by a physical button—not a general-purpose display or documented Wi-Fi smart-home interface.

Availability is particularly important for U.S. buyers. IKEA’s 2022 U.S. press material listed the lamp at $89.99, but that is a historical price rather than a current one. The current U.S. wall-lamp category inspected on August 18, 2026 did not display an OBEGRÄNSAD listing. Check IKEA’s current U.S. wall-lamp listings or the second-hand market before planning a build.
What the ESP32 modification adds
The project firmware, available in the open-source ph1p/ikea-led-obegraensad repository, takes over communication with the matrix. It adds:
- Wi-Fi control and a browser-based web interface
- Persistent drawings, image loading, rotation, and live drawing
- Custom animation creation and scheduled plugin switching
- OTA firmware updates
- Clocks, large clocks, weather, rain, fireworks, stars, lines, and circle animations
- Conway’s Game of Life, Breakout, Snake, and Pong Clock
- DDP support and integrations for automation-oriented setups
“Smart display” is a useful description, but it should not be confused with a conventional screen. This remains a low-resolution LED matrix with a deliberately blocky aesthetic. It is suitable for icons, simple text, animated patterns, clocks, weather symbols, and games—not detailed graphics, video, or a bright full-color dashboard.

How the hardware is arranged
The lamp contains four identical matrix plates with 64 LEDs per plate. The lowest plate exposes connectors that can be used to attach a replacement controller. The original microcontroller is removed or bypassed, and an ESP32 assumes responsibility for sending the matrix’s data, clock, latch, and enable signals.
The precise physical installation depends on the development board, board revision, custom PCB, and wiring method. This is not a standardized retrofit kit. Use the current repository and its board-specific configuration as the implementation reference rather than treating an old photograph or wiring diagram as universal.
Parts and tools
- An IKEA OBEGRÄNSAD LED wall lamp
- An ESP32 development board, preferably one compatible with the project’s
esp32devPlatformIO environment - A USB cable and suitable 5 V power supply
- Hookup wire, solder, flux, heat-shrink tubing, and soldering equipment
- Precision screwdrivers and tools for opening the enclosure
- A drill if you choose to remove the rivets rather than pry the panel open

The 3.3 V and 5 V logic concern
This is the most important qualification missing from many casual descriptions of the project. ESP32 GPIO operates at 3.3 V, while the lamp’s SCT2024 LED drivers are operated at 5 V. A later project discussion points out that the driver’s stated high-input threshold may be 3.5 V, putting a direct 3.3 V signal outside specification.
Some builds may work with direct connections, but that does not establish a reliable design for every lamp or driver revision. A 5 V buffer such as the SN74HCT125N is a safer circuit to investigate for the data, clock, latch, and enable signals. The Texas Instruments SN74HCT125 documentation provides the relevant device information.
This is an engineering recommendation, not a claim that the buffer has been formally validated for every community build. Confirm the supply, grounds, signal direction, board layout, and driver requirements before powering the completed assembly.
Opening the lamp
Disconnect the USB power before doing any work. Place the lamp face-down on a protected surface and inspect the rear panel. The enclosure uses rivets rather than ordinary screws, so opening it can damage the back panel and may be irreversible.
- Identify the rivet locations before applying force.
- Insert a screwdriver carefully between the rivets and rear panel.
- Work gradually, using a second tool to spread the force and reduce cracking or deformation.
- Alternatively, drill out the rivets for a cleaner but permanent opening.
- Photograph every connector and wire before removing the original controller.
Do not work on the lamp while powered. Although its external supply is low voltage, a short can damage the USB adapter, controller, wiring, or LED boards. The modification can also void any warranty, so treat the enclosure and original electronics as non-reversible unless you have a replacement plan.

Do not copy this table unchanged to a TTGO, Lolin, ESP8266, or Xiao board. Verify the current include/constants.h and board-specific PlatformIO settings before making connections. Maintain a common ground, and confirm the matrix connector orientation from your own photographs and measurements.
Installing the firmware
The documented setup uses Visual Studio Code and PlatformIO:
- Install Visual Studio Code.
- Install the PlatformIO IDE extension.
- Clone the firmware repository and open the project:
git clone https://github.com/ph1p/ikea-led-obegraensad.git cd ikea-led-obegraensad code . - Connect the ESP32 over USB.
- Check the selected board environment and edit the pin definitions in
include/constants.has needed. - Configure the Wi-Fi credentials required by the current firmware.
- Build and upload with PlatformIO.
- Use the serial monitor or your router’s client list to find the ESP32’s IP address.
- Open that address in a browser and test the controls at low brightness first.
PlatformIO should load the project dependencies automatically. If a library is missing, use PlatformIO’s library tools or consult the repository documentation. The repository remains active: its listed release is v1.0.1, dated December 22, 2025, so use the current source rather than assuming the original Hackster article reflects every implementation detail.
Browser control and OTA updates
Once the device is connected to the local network, the firmware provides a web interface for selecting modes, loading images, and controlling the display. The documented firmware-update page is:
http://your-device-ip/update
Configure unique credentials before enabling OTA access. Do not expose the update endpoint directly to the public internet; keep the lamp on a trusted local network and use a strong, non-default password. If an OTA update fails or the device disappears from Wi-Fi, recover through USB with PlatformIO rather than repeatedly attempting remote updates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Home Assistant and alternative firmware
The project identifies a Home Assistant integration, making the lamp useful for displaying sensor values, automation states, notifications, or other local data. This is a custom integration—not native IKEA Home, Matter, Zigbee, or HomeKit compatibility. Installing the firmware does not turn the lamp into a standard IKEA smart-light product.

ESPHome-based forks may suit users who already operate Home Assistant, although they may not include the original project’s games, drawing tools, or web interface. WLED experiments are also possible, but the matrix’s driver arrangement is not automatically equivalent to an addressable LED strip; pixel ordering, brightness control, wiring, and power handling must be solved separately.
Recommended Free Tools
For creative coding, Hackster reported a community adaptation connected to the Tixy live-coding environment. That direction is better for generative visuals than for practical clocks or dashboards, and it should be treated as a fork or separate project rather than a guaranteed feature of the main firmware.
Troubleshooting common failures
Flickering, resets, or a black panel
- Reduce brightness and the number of lit pixels.
- Confirm that the ESP32 and matrix share a common ground.
- Check the 5 V supply under load, not only with no LEDs lit.
- Inspect solder joints, wire thickness, connector orientation, and polarity.
- Confirm the selected PlatformIO board environment.
- Verify every GPIO definition against the installed board.
- Try separate 5 V supply leads for the controller and matrix where appropriate.
- Add the recommended 5 V buffer or level-shifting circuit.
- Reflash over USB if the web interface is unreachable.
Voltage drop and inadequate signal levels can become more apparent at high brightness or when many pixels are lit. A supply that works during a dim test may still brown out the controller during a bright animation.
The device will not connect to Wi-Fi
Check the credentials, local network isolation, and serial output. Some guest networks prevent devices from communicating with one another, which can make a working ESP32 appear unreachable from your browser. Confirm the IP address assigned by the router before assuming the firmware failed.
OTA recovery fails
Connect the ESP32 by USB, select the correct serial port, rebuild the project, and upload through PlatformIO. Inspect serial output for boot errors, missing credentials, or repeated resets. USB recovery is the dependable fallback because it does not rely on the device’s Wi-Fi service starting successfully.
Is this IKEA hack worth doing?
Attempt it if you already own the OBEGRÄNSAD, enjoy soldering and microcontroller projects, and want a distinctive low-resolution display for artwork, games, clocks, weather, or home-automation data. The open-source firmware, browser control, and ESP32 platform make the project extensible, while the original enclosure gives it a look that a generic LED panel does not have.
Skip it if you need a reversible modification, native IKEA Home or Matter support, high-resolution text, or a simple mobile setup. The lamp may be difficult to source, the enclosure opening is destructive or semi-destructive, and power, wiring, logic levels, and firmware recovery all require real troubleshooting.
Current IKEA smart lamps such as products in the VARMBLIXT range are not equivalent replacements: they may offer native smart-home features, but they do not reproduce the OBEGRÄNSAD matrix-hack experience. The strongest reason to build this project is not convenience; it is the combination of IKEA’s physical design with an open-ended programmable display.
