Yes—but not from plastic alone. PAROL6 is an open-source, six-degree-of-freedom desktop robot arm created by Petar Crnjak and developed commercially by Source Robotics. You can print its PETG structural parts, download the software and documentation, and source the remaining hardware yourself. The finished machine still requires motors, gearing, electronics, wiring, fasteners, a power supply, computer, calibration and usually a gripper.
That makes PAROL6 a serious home mechatronics project rather than a one-click appliance. Its “industrial-style” description refers to its articulated six-axis layout, joint and Cartesian control, and automation-oriented workflows—not to industrial certification, factory-grade payload performance or unattended operation around people.

What PAROL6 is
PAROL6 is a desktop articulated robot arm designed with conventional industrial robots as a mechanical and usability reference. Its six axes, also called six degrees of freedom (6 DOF), let the arm position and orient a tool in space using a sequence of rotary joints.

PAROL6 is described by the project as open source under GPLv3. That applies to the project’s published code and design material; it does not mean every motor, gearbox, electronic component or third-party accessory is open source.
Industrial-style does not mean industrial robot. PAROL6 brings an industrial-like form factor, coordinate concepts, joint control and automation workflows to a maker-scale platform. It does not provide the safety certification, guarding, stiffness, duty-cycle validation, controller certification or production support expected of industrial automation equipment.
Can you really build one at home?
Yes, if “build at home” means assembling a mixed-material machine from printed parts and purchased hardware. The printable parts are only one part of the robot.
A realistic DIY builder needs:
- A 3D printer capable of producing dimensionally accurate PETG parts.
- PETG filament and a way to inspect parts for warping, layer separation and damaged mounting holes.
- Mechanical tools, assembly space and a stable surface or mounting structure.
- Soldering and wiring skills, plus basic electronics knowledge.
- Basic terminal navigation, Git and Python familiarity for the Commander software.
- A computer capable of running the control software.
- Time for mechanical alignment, electrical troubleshooting, homing and mastering.
- An accessible way to disconnect power quickly.
The project’s current print table, STL directory, BOM and assembly instructions should be treated as the authority. Do not assume that every consumer printer can produce the parts, and do not rely on an old article for print time, filament weight, settings or part count. Those details can change with design revisions.
What must be printed?
The printable package includes the PETG mechanical structure: arm housings, structural shells, joint-related components, mounting or enclosure pieces where applicable, and supplied printed gripper or end-effector parts.

The distinction between the project files matters:
- STL files are the normal starting point for printing.
- STEP files are useful for CAD inspection, modification and manufacturing workflows. They are not required for ordinary STL printing; Source Robotics sells them separately.
- The BOM identifies the complete inventory, including components that are not printed.
- The assembly documentation explains how the parts fit together and how the machine is set up.
Printed parts are structural components, not disposable cosmetic covers. Warping, undersized holes, layer separation, creep or poor alignment can affect bearings, belts, gearboxes, motor mounts and calibration. Reject visibly compromised structural parts rather than trying to compensate for them in software.
What must be bought or sourced?
The non-printed build includes, at minimum, stepper motors, gearboxes or other specified transmission components, control electronics and motor-driver hardware, a power supply, fasteners, wiring and connectors, USB or programming accessories as required, a computer and an end effector.
The exact component types and quantities should come from the matching BOM revision. A visually similar motor, gearbox, connector or power supply is not automatically a safe substitute. Check voltage, current, dimensions, mounting, connector polarity and firmware compatibility before changing the bill of materials.
This is why “I can print the robot” is an incomplete description. The files may be free to download, but the working machine depends on a substantial purchased hardware set, as well as tools, failed prints and possible replacement parts.

How PAROL6’s software works
PAROL Commander is a Python-based open-source control application listed for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its documented features include joint and Cartesian jogging, telemetry, error reporting, program loading and saving, and support for custom scripts.
The project documentation also points to a Python API, legacy API material, ROS2 and MoveIt simulation resources, community web interfaces, vision and AI projects, and LEAP Motion control code. Community integrations should be treated as separate projects, not as standard validated capabilities of every PAROL6 installation.
Because installation steps and dependencies can change, use the current official documentation and software repositories rather than copying an unverified command sequence from an older guide.

| Route | Listed price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Fully DIY | Not fixed by the project | Print the parts and source all hardware from the current BOM. |
| 3D Printed Parts KIT | €357.00 | Printed PETG parts only. You still source the mechanical and electronic hardware. |
| Partial KIT | €1,188.81 | Hard-to-find components, but excludes gearboxes, stepper motors and the power supply. |
| Robotic arm KIT | €2,378.81 | Hardware required to build the robot, excluding printed parts and the power supply. |
| Fully assembled arm | €3,570.00 | Assembled and intended to work with PAROL Commander, subject to computer and setup requirements. |
Which route fits?
- Choose fully DIY if you already have a suitable printer, can troubleshoot mechanics and electronics, and value control over the build more than convenience.
- Choose the printed-parts kit if you want consistent finished PETG parts but are comfortable sourcing everything else.
- Choose the partial kit if you want selected hard-to-find components while still sourcing gearboxes, stepper motors and the power supply yourself. It is not the beginner shortcut it may appear to be.
- Choose the full hardware kit if you want less BOM hunting and will print or separately buy the structural parts.
- Choose the assembled arm if setup time, support and a faster route to operation matter more than learning the construction process.
Optional items can change the economics. Source Robotics lists a screw kit, STEP files, programming adapter, control board and several grippers and accessories. None should be assumed necessary for every configuration; check the current BOM and intended end effector before ordering.
A practical build and setup path
- Select an acquisition route. Decide whether your priority is learning, lower sourcing cost, reduced print work, bundled hardware or immediate operation.
- Freeze the design revision. Record the repository revision or release date, then download the matching STL files, print table, BOM and manual. Do not mix old and new files without checking compatibility. The repository shows a V1 release dated March 8, 2025, but that is a release marker rather than proof that every current product uses only that revision.
- Read the safety material first. Review the project’s safety warning and disclaimer, prepare a physical power disconnect and clear the work area.
- Print and inspect the PETG parts. Follow the current print table. Check dimensions, holes, layer adhesion and warping before assembly.
- Match the hardware to the BOM. Inspect motors, gearboxes, electronics, fasteners, cables and connectors. Keep power disconnected while wiring changes are made.
- Assemble mechanically in the documented order. Check bearing, gearbox, motor and belt alignment; avoid overtightening printed components; and route cables so they cannot rub or bind through the joint range.
- Install the control hardware and software. Connect the control board, drivers, USB interface, power supply and any programming accessories required by the current documentation. Confirm that the computer recognizes the arm before enabling movement.
- Home and master the arm. The documentation explains that Joint 6 moves to allow Joint 5 to home. Mastering involves moving joints to their witness-mark positions and recording the robot’s position. Expect build-to-build differences because printer tolerances vary.
- Test unloaded and slowly. Jog one joint at a time. Verify direction, limits, homing, emergency power removal and clearance before adding a payload.
- Add the end effector last. Check its mass, mounting, electrical or pneumatic requirements and control integration, then reassess practical payload and reach.
What can it actually do?
PAROL6 is a useful platform for learning how a six-axis arm is operated and integrated. Joint jogging exposes individual-axis control; Cartesian jogging introduces tool-position concepts; saved programs and Python scripts support repeatable demonstrations and experiments. ROS2 and MoveIt resources can extend the project into simulation and robotics software development.
Likely applications include pick-and-place demonstrations, gluing experiments, PCB testing, education, research and small automation. These are appropriate use cases, not evidence that a particular build will deliver production reliability. A tool, camera, vacuum system or pneumatic accessory can introduce additional mass, wiring, pressure and safety requirements.
Safety and limitations
The project’s own warning material says the hardware, software and assembly documentation are experimental and may contain bugs, errors or incomplete features. It also refers to lethal voltages and serious injury hazards. Treat the arm as hazardous machinery, even though it is desktop-sized.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Disconnect power before changing wiring or electronics.
- Use an accessible physical emergency power cutoff; do not rely on software alone.
- Keep hands, clothing and loose objects clear of moving joints and the tool flange.
- Secure the arm to a stable surface or suitable mounting structure. The product information mentions standard mounting points for aluminium profiles.
- Use extra caution during first power-up, homing and calibration.
- Never rotate Joint 5 more than one full turn. Follow the official homing procedure if it fails rather than improvising joint motion.
- Do not operate it unattended around people or treat its small size as a safety guarantee.
Printed PETG can also creep or deform under sustained load or heat. A headline payload cannot establish safe capacity for every reach, speed, acceleration or build quality. If your application requires certified safeguarding, high stiffness, validated continuous duty or high-speed production operation, PAROL6 is the wrong category of machine.

PAROL6 compared with other robot-arm categories
The useful comparison is not simply the purchase price:
| Alternative | Typical advantage | Typical compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Small educational servo arm | Lower cost and simpler setup | Usually less industrial-like, rigid or capable. |
| Commercial desktop arm | More polished support and integration | Usually much more expensive and may use proprietary software. |
| Other open-source DIY arm | More freedom to modify | Documentation, payload, repeatability and support vary widely. |
| Industrial collaborative arm | Better production support and safety systems | Far more expensive and unsuitable for a casual home build. |
Compare six-axis capability, payload and reach, repeatability, CAD/STL/BOM availability, software and API support, calibration burden, end-effector choices, safety documentation, spare parts and vendor support. Include shipping, taxes, tools, failed prints, replacement parts and the computer—not just the apparent cost of the files.
Is PAROL6 worth building?
PAROL6 is a credible choice for an experienced maker, robotics student, educator or small-automation developer who wants to understand the entire stack: printed mechanics, motion hardware, electronics, calibration and software. Its strongest value is the combination of an industrial-style six-axis architecture and publicly available design and control material.
