There is no single best mode for every Patna trip. Choose the metro only when both your origin and destination are close to the short section that is actually operating. For journeys outside that footprint, a city bus or auto-rickshaw is usually the practical starting point, subject to the route, time of day, walking distance and current service. As of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ Rajya Sabha answer dated 23 March 2026, about 3 km of Patna Metro was operational. That is very different from the larger Phase 1 network shown on planning maps.
This guide explains how to make a defensible choice for a real journey, what is currently known about each mode, which fare figures are historical, and what you must verify before setting out.

What is actually running in Patna?
The most authoritative operating figure in the available evidence is the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ answer to Rajya Sabha Unstarred Question 3415, dated 23 March 2026: about 3 km of Patna Metro was operational at that time. This is the figure to use when judging whether the metro can serve a trip, rather than the full Phase 1 map or unofficial route-planner listings.
A 3-km operating section is a useful urban link, but it is not yet a citywide network. A journey may appear close to the metro on a map and still require a substantial walk, an auto or a bus at one or both ends. Treat the train ride as only one component of the trip, not as proof that the entire origin-to-destination journey is covered.

Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PMRCL) publishes a Phase 1 plan with two much longer corridors:
| Planned corridor | Planned alignment | Planned length | Planned stations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corridor 1 | Danapur–Mithapur–Khemni Chak | 17.93 km | 14 |
| Corridor 2 | Patna Railway Station–Gandhi Maidan–Patliputra Bus Terminal | 14.57 km | 12 |
Together, the planned corridors represent 32.50 km and 26 planned stations. Those are planned totals, not a description of the service passengers could use on 23 March 2026. A map can therefore be useful for understanding the intended network while being misleading for today’s trip planning.
PMRCL’s Corridor 1 information labels Malahi Pakri, Khemni Chak, Bhootnath Road, Zero Mile and ISBT Patna as constructed or working stations. That project wording does not prove that every listed station was open for passenger boarding. Confirm the current passenger opening, operating hours and fare before relying on any station-specific advice.
The parliamentary answer also records the precise limitation on a separate bus programme. It says 150 buses were sanctioned for Patna under PM-eBus Sewa, but none had been deployed under that scheme as of the answer because civil-depot and behind-the-meter (BTM) power infrastructure was incomplete. The answer lists ₹30.94 crore for BTM infrastructure and ₹3.96 crore for civil-depot infrastructure. In the minister’s wording, “At present, Civil Depot and BTM infrastructure work has not been completed. Therefore, as of now no e-buses has been deployed under the Scheme.” This refers to the PM-eBus Sewa allocation, not every bus or electric bus in the city.
How each mode fits a Patna journey
Metro: useful on the live segment, not yet a citywide solution
A metro trip makes sense when an operating station is close to both ends, or when a short, straightforward last-mile connection is available. Its fixed alignment can make a journey predictable once you are on the train, but the approximately 3-km operating extent reported by the central government limits how many origin-destination pairs it can serve today.
- Check that the station is open to passengers, not merely listed as constructed or working in a project update.
- Include walking, an auto connection or another feeder at each end when estimating the total journey.
- Verify the day’s first and last train, fare, platform access and any temporary closure through current PMRCL information.
- Do not use the 17.93-km and 14.57-km Phase 1 totals as evidence that those full corridors are already available.
For a visitor, a metro-plus-auto combination may still be worthwhile if it avoids a long road journey, but only a current station and timetable check can establish that. For a regular commuter, note the actual door-to-door time over several days; a reliable train segment can be offset by variable access traffic or a long final walk.

City bus: broad relevance, but verify the specific service
Buses remain relevant for destinations and streets outside the current metro footprint. Bihar Tourism identifies city buses as a way to reach multiple Patna destinations. The Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) provides an official journey-search facility, online ticketing and bus tracking.
The available authoritative material does not establish a dependable, current citywide list of local routes, headways, operating hours or fares. Therefore, do not promise that a particular bus number will arrive, quote a universal city-bus fare, or describe buses as the fastest or cheapest mode without checking the exact journey in the current BSRTC tools.
When using a journey search, enter the actual boarding and alighting points rather than only a broad area name. Check whether the result is an intercity journey, a local service or a connection that requires walking between stops. Save the boarding stop and service window, because a route result without a practical stop location is not enough for a time-critical trip. Tracking information can also change during the day, so check again shortly before leaving.

Auto-rickshaw: flexible access for short or uncovered links
Bihar Tourism also identifies auto-rickshaws as a way to get around Patna. An auto can be especially useful when the nearest bus stop or metro station is not close to your destination, when you are carrying luggage, or when your trip falls outside a practical scheduled service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no current authoritative auto-rickshaw fare schedule in the evidence used here. Price, availability and speed vary by route, traffic and negotiation or metering practice. Obtain a route-specific quote before treating an auto as cheaper or quicker than a bus or metro combination. Ask whether the quoted amount covers the complete destination, and agree on the fare before departure when no meter or app price is being used.
Which mode should you choose for your trip?
Use the following order. It prevents a planned network from being mistaken for an operating one and keeps the comparison tied to your actual doors-to-door journey.
- Write down both endpoints. Use the exact neighbourhood, landmark, building or gate rather than only “central Patna” or a district name.
- Check the live metro footprint. Look for an operating station near each end. If either end requires a long or complicated connection, the metro may add transfers rather than save time.
- Check BSRTC for a direct or simple bus. Use the journey-search, ticketing or tracking functions for the date and time you will travel. Record the route, boarding point and expected service window.
- Price and time the last mile. Include walking, an auto connection, waiting, transfers, parking or pickup time. A short rail ride is not automatically a short total trip.
- Apply practical constraints. Luggage, mobility needs, rain, heat, late-night travel, crowding and the need for a guaranteed seat can change the best choice.
- Recheck shortly before departure. Metro openings, hours and fares can change quickly, while bus availability and traffic conditions are time-sensitive.
When the metro is the better fit
- Both ends are near a station confirmed as open for passengers.
- The route avoids a long feeder ride or multiple transfers.
- You value a fixed rail alignment and can travel within the published operating hours.
- Your departure and arrival times leave a safe margin before the last train.
When a bus is the better fit
- Your destination lies beyond the currently operating metro segment.
- BSRTC shows a direct route or one easy transfer from a convenient stop.
- You need a corridor or neighbourhood not reached by the open metro stations.
- You can tolerate variable traffic and have checked the current service rather than relying on an old route list.
When an auto is the better fit
- You need door-to-door access or a short connection from a station or bus stop.
- You are carrying luggage or travelling with someone for whom a long walk is difficult.
- No practical scheduled bus or operating metro station serves the final stretch.
- You have confirmed the fare for your specific route and are comfortable with traffic variability.
Fares: what can and cannot be compared
Do not publish a current “cheapest mode” conclusion from the dated figures available. The Bihar Bhawan Government of Bihar newsletter for October 2025 reported a ₹15 minimum metro fare and ₹30 for the New ISBT–Bhootnath Road stretch. Those numbers are historical newsletter figures, not a verified current metro fare table. The same newsletter said formal safety certification was still pending at that time, another reason to confirm present operating conditions before travel.
No current authoritative city-bus fare schedule or auto-rickshaw fare schedule suitable for a three-way comparison was established. A fare quoted by a blog, an old social-media post or a remembered journey may no longer apply. Check the current operator or ask for a route-specific auto quote. Also account for the cost of any feeder auto or extra bus when comparing a metro journey; the rail ticket alone is not the full price.
A separate sightseeing bus example
The October 2025 Bihar government newsletter also described a sightseeing double-decker service on a 15-km Digha Rotary–Kangan Ghat route. It reported operation from 5 PM to 10 PM, at ₹50 one way or ₹100 round trip. This is a visitor-oriented service, not a benchmark for ordinary city-bus fares. Its continued operation, hours and price should be confirmed before you plan around it.
How to compare total travel time fairly
Published in-vehicle time alone gives a misleading result. Compare the entire trip:
- Access time: walking, an auto ride, parking or a pickup to the first stop or station.
- Waiting time: the interval until the next bus or train, including any uncertainty.
- In-vehicle time: rail, bus or auto travel under the traffic conditions expected at your departure time.
- Transfer time: changing modes, finding the correct platform or stop and buying a ticket.
- Exit time: walking from the final stop or station to the actual destination.
The available sources do not provide current citywide headways, timetable coverage or comparable traffic-time measurements, so a universal fastest-mode ranking would be unsupported. A direct bus can beat a metro that requires two long feeder rides; an auto can be quickest for a short uncovered link but more expensive or less predictable in congestion.
Make a simple three-line comparison for each option: total minutes, total rupees and the number of changes. Record a range rather than false precision when traffic or waiting is uncertain. For a medical appointment, exam or train connection, add a buffer and favour the option with a dependable fallback, not merely the shortest expected time.

Accessibility, luggage and late travel
Accessibility is a route-level question, not a label attached to an entire mode. Confirm step-free station access, elevator availability and the walking surface at both metro ends. For buses, check the boarding stop and whether the vehicle and stop can accommodate your mobility needs. For autos, consider the vehicle’s step height, available space and whether luggage can be secured.
At night, verify the actual last departure rather than assuming the metro or a bus runs late. If a station or stop is unfamiliar, plan the final walk in daylight or arrange a known pickup point. The evidence does not establish a citywide night-service timetable, so do not infer one. Keep a charged phone, a second route and enough cash or an accepted payment method for the final connection.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Counting the full Phase 1 map as open service
The two Phase 1 corridors total 32.50 km and 26 planned stations, but those figures describe the plan. Use only stations and track confirmed as open on the date of travel.
Treating “constructed” as “open”
PMRCL’s wording about five Corridor 1 stations concerns construction or project status. It does not by itself establish passenger service. Look for a current operating announcement or station-level confirmation.

Using an old fare as today’s price
The ₹15 and ₹30 metro figures came from an October 2025 newsletter. Carry their date and context whenever you mention them; verify the present fare before buying a ticket.
Assuming the PM-eBus Sewa figure describes every Patna bus
The 150-bus number is the Patna allocation sanctioned under one scheme. The March 2026 answer said none had yet been deployed under that scheme because depot and power works were incomplete. It does not prove that Patna had no other buses or electric buses.
Choosing by mode reputation instead of endpoint coverage
A metro is not automatically faster, a bus is not automatically cheaper and an auto is not automatically available. Compare the specific origin, destination, access legs, waiting, transfers and current price.
Ignoring the return journey
A route that works in the morning may be impractical after the last train or a change in bus frequency. Check both directions, especially when an event, appointment or train arrival determines your return time.

- Check the current metro fare for your stations.
- Search the exact bus journey in BSRTC’s official tools and note the boarding stop.
- Allow for traffic, waiting and a final walk instead of using only map distance.
- Get a current auto fare for the precise route before boarding.
- Plan an alternative if the connection depends on the last train or a low-frequency bus.
- Recheck information close to departure because transport status can change quickly.
What this means for visitors and residents
Visitors moving between well-known sights should first identify the nearest confirmed operating metro station, then compare that access with a direct bus or an auto to the door. Bihar Tourism’s guidance confirms that buses and autos serve multiple Patna destinations, but it does not supply a current fare-and-time matrix. Residents making a regular commute should test the same origin-destination pair at the actual departure time and keep a bus or auto fallback until metro coverage and schedules are stable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Patna Metro running?
Yes, but only a short section was reported operational. A Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs answer dated 23 March 2026 reported about 3 km in operation. Confirm the currently open stations and hours with PMRCL before travelling.
Which Patna Metro stations are open?
PMRCL lists Malahi Pakri, Khemni Chak, Bhootnath Road, Zero Mile and ISBT Patna as constructed or working on Corridor 1. That wording is project information, not proof that every station accepts passengers, so check a current passenger-service announcement.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan I use city buses or autos to get around Patna?
Yes. Bihar Tourism identifies both city buses and auto-rickshaws as ways to reach Patna destinations. Use BSRTC’s current journey-search and tracking tools for a bus, and obtain a route-specific quote for an auto.
What is the Patna Metro fare?
A Government of Bihar newsletter from October 2025 reported a ₹15 minimum and ₹30 for the New ISBT–Bhootnath Road stretch. These are dated figures, not a verified current fare table. Check the present fare before buying a ticket.
Is Patna Metro cheaper than a bus or auto?
There is no defensible universal answer from current published information. No comparable current city-bus and auto fare schedules were established, and feeder costs can change the total. Compare the complete route, including access and transfers.
Are the two Phase 1 metro corridors fully open?
No conclusion of full operation should be drawn from the plan. PMRCL’s map shows Corridor 1 at 17.93 km with 14 stations and Corridor 2 at 14.57 km with 12 stations, while the March 2026 government answer reported only about 3 km operational.
Were all 150 PM-eBus Sewa buses running in Patna?
No. The March 2026 parliamentary answer said 150 were sanctioned, but none had been deployed under that scheme because depot and behind-the-meter power infrastructure was incomplete. That does not describe every bus in Patna.
The Bottom Line
Choose by endpoints, not by the mode’s reputation or the planned metro map. The metro can be sensible on its confirmed operating section; buses remain important beyond that footprint; and autos are useful for flexible door-to-door links. Check current openings, hours, fares and BSRTC or route-specific auto details immediately before travelling.
