Place a patio heater only where its exact owner’s or installation manual allows it. Use the manual’s clearance measurements for the ceiling, walls, roof, furniture, plants, and every other nearby material. Keep combustion-air inlets and exhaust paths open, set the heater on a stable surface outside normal foot traffic, and use a fuel-burning model only outdoors or in a partial enclosure expressly approved for that model.

There is no single clearance number that applies to every patio heater. A covered patio, pergola, screened porch, or gazebo is safe only when the specific heater and the structure satisfy the same manual requirements. An open door or window does not make an enclosed or unapproved location safe.

The manual—not a generic rule—sets the clearance

Patio heaters differ in fuel system, burner design, heat output, mounting position, and approved enclosure. Their manuals therefore specify different distances and configurations. Treat any number as valid only for the exact make, model, and arrangement identified in that manual.

Before choosing a location, find the current owner’s or installation manual and identify all of these items:

Amazon Basics 46,000 BTU Portable Outdoor Propane Patio Heater with Wheels, Commercial & Residential with Water Tank, Adjustable Heat Output, 9-Foot Radius, Slate Gray, 32.1"L x 32.1"W x 91.3"H
  • SOOTHING WARMTH: Outdoor gas heater for cozy warmth when sitting outside; ideal for cafes, restaurants, and home patios
  • EASY TO USE AND MOVE: One-touch ignition button for quick start ups; wheels for maneuvering into place
  • POWERFUL HEAT: 46,000 BTUs for heating up to a 9 foot radius; adjustable temperature knob for controlling the output
  • SAFETY FEATURES: Tilt safety auto-shut off valve; water box for weighing down the base and wheel kit; chain included to secure the tank
  • DURABLE EXTERIOR & REQUIRES: Powder-coated finish in Slate Gray for lasting strength; 20 pound liquid propane gas tank to operate (not included)
  • Minimum clearance above the heater, including the underside of a roof, awning, umbrella, or ceiling.
  • Required side and rear distances from combustible construction and furnishings.
  • Any required distance below or in front of a wall-mounted unit.
  • Approved wall, roof, and partial-enclosure configurations.
  • Required space around combustion-air openings, burner areas, and exhaust outlets.
  • Wind, operating, fuel, or mounting limits that could rule out the proposed location.

Measure the proposed site against those instructions rather than averaging values from another product. A clearance that is acceptable for one model can be inadequate for another.

What the published manuals demonstrate

Examples from several manufacturer manuals show why category-wide advice is unreliable. The figures below are examples tied to the named appliance and configuration, not universal patio-heater rules.

Manual example Clearance or configuration information How to use the information
Mr. Heater propane model A 1.2 m (47-inch) clearance is specified for one stated shelter arrangement. The manual also describes limited partial-enclosure conditions and prohibits use in a house, building, garage, or other enclosed or unventilated area. Apply the 1.2 m figure only to the arrangement and model described in that manual. Do not transfer it to another propane heater.
Napoleon PTH2650SS The manual lists 45 cm above and 60 cm at the sides from combustible construction. Use these distances only for the PTH2650SS instructions and the construction type identified there.
Sunpak heater models The clearance table separates side, rear, ceiling, and below distances by heater model. Look up the exact model and direction in the table; a side value cannot substitute for a ceiling or below clearance.

These examples also show why “non-combustible” does not automatically mean “no clearance.” Sunpak explains that surrounding space is needed for combustion air and exhaust ventilation, while Napoleon warns against obstructing combustion and ventilation air. The required space can therefore protect operation as well as nearby materials.

Ventilation: fuel-burning heaters need outdoor airflow

Propane and other fuel-burning patio heaters consume oxygen and produce combustion exhaust. Their air inlets and exhaust paths must remain unobstructed, and the appliance must be used only in the outdoor or partial-enclosure configuration its manual expressly permits.

“This appliance shall be used only in a well-ventilated space and shall not be used in a building, garage or any other enclosed area.”

That wording is from the reviewed manufacturer manual for a particular appliance. It is not a blanket description of every model’s approved configuration, but it illustrates the governing principle: an enclosure must be specifically allowed by the heater’s instructions.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2026 winter-safety guidance adds an important warning: “Opening doors or windows will not provide enough ventilation to prevent the buildup of lethal levels of CO.” A cracked door, raised garage door, or open window is not a substitute for an approved outdoor installation. If the manual says a space is enclosed or unventilated, do not operate the heater there.

Covered patios, pergolas, screened porches, and gazebos

Covered patio

Start by determining whether the heater is approved beneath a roof or other cover. Then measure from the heater to the underside of that cover and to every nearby wall, post, curtain, furniture item, plant, and stored object. The manual may require a specific roof height or an open-sided arrangement. If the cover cannot meet those conditions, move the heater to an open location or select a model whose manual expressly permits the structure.

Pergola

A pergola may look open while still placing combustible beams directly above the emitter. Count every beam, slat, shade, fabric panel, and vine as part of the overhead environment. Use the manual’s overhead and side clearances, not the visual impression that the structure is airy.

Screened porch

Screens do not automatically create an approved outdoor configuration. They can restrict airflow and may be combustible. Confirm that the manual allows the degree of enclosure and that the required permanently open portions, wall limits, and clearances are met. If the instructions are silent or unclear, do not infer approval.

Gazebo or temporary shelter

Fabric roofs and side curtains can add combustible surfaces and reduce ventilation. Remove or reposition them only if the manual’s configuration permits the heater to operate afterward; otherwise, use the heater outside the shelter.

Step-by-step placement procedure

  1. Identify the exact appliance. Record the manufacturer, model number, fuel type, and whether it is freestanding, wall-mounted, or ceiling-mounted. Obtain the matching owner’s or installation manual.
  2. Classify the proposed space. Decide whether it is fully open, partially enclosed, covered, screened, or enclosed. Describe every wall, roof, screen, curtain, umbrella, and temporary panel.
  3. Mark the heater’s footprint. Choose a level, stable surface where the unit cannot easily be struck, tipped, or placed in a walkway. Account for the cylinder or fuel connection if the model uses one.
  4. Measure overhead clearance. Measure from the heater’s specified reference point to the lowest roof member, beam, awning, umbrella, or other material. Use the manual’s required dimension for that exact configuration.
  5. Measure side, rear, front, and below clearances. Check each direction named in the manual. Include walls, posts, railings, furniture, plants, stored goods, decorations, and combustible construction.
  6. Check airflow openings. Locate combustion-air inlets, burner openings, ventilation slots, and exhaust outlets. Verify that no wall, cover, furniture item, dust buildup, or decorative screen blocks them.
  7. Verify enclosure approval. Compare the actual walls and open portions with the manual’s permitted partial-enclosure diagrams or wording. Do not substitute a general “outdoor” label for this check.
  8. Check local requirements. Determine whether local building, fire, or fuel-gas rules apply to the installation. Manufacturer instructions commonly require compliance with local codes or referenced fuel-gas codes.
  9. Control traffic and contact hazards. Keep the heater away from door swings, stairs, children’s play areas, grill work zones, and routes where people could bump the unit or snag a hose or cord.
  10. Recheck after setup. Confirm that furniture, umbrellas, planters, seasonal decorations, or a newly installed cover have not reduced any required distance or blocked airflow.

How to measure clearances accurately

Use the reference points shown in the manual. A measurement from the edge of a base is not necessarily the same as a measurement from the emitter, burner, reflector, or exhaust outlet. If the manual provides a diagram, reproduce its orientation on site before taking measurements.

Amazon Basics 46,000 BTU Portable Outdoor Propane Patio Heater with Wheels, Commercial & Residential, Easy to Use, with Water Tank, Havana Bronze, 32.1 x 32.1 x 91.3 inches
  • SOOTHING WARMTH: Outdoor gas heater for cozy warmth when sitting outside; ideal for cafes, restaurants, and home patios
  • EASY TO USE AND MOVE: One-touch ignition button for quick start ups; wheels for maneuvering into place
  • POWERFUL HEAT: 46,000 BTUs for heating up to a 18 foot diameter; adjustable temperature knob for controlling the output
  • SAFETY FEATURES: Tilt safety auto-shut off valve; water box for weighing down the base and wheel kit; chain included to secure the tank
  • DURABLE EXTERIOR & REQUIRES: Powder-coated finish in Havana Bronze for lasting strength; 20 pound liquid propane gas tank to operate (not included)
  • Above: Measure to the lowest overhead surface, not to the highest point of a vaulted roof.
  • Sides: Measure to the nearest wall, post, screen, curtain, furniture edge, plant, or stored item on each side.
  • Rear: Check the space behind the reflector, control housing, or mounting plate if the manual specifies a rear distance.
  • Below and in front: For mounted heaters, verify any required distance beneath or in front of the unit, including the area where people stand.
  • Combustible materials: Treat wood, fabric, dried vegetation, paper, plastic, and similar items as combustible unless the manual defines the material differently.

Do not reduce a required distance because a surface is labeled non-combustible. The clearance may be necessary for combustion air and exhaust, as well as for heat protection.

Stable placement and traffic control

A heater that meets dimensional clearances can still be unsafe if it is easy to knock over. CPSC heater-safety research identifies stable placement, clear surroundings, ventilation, and clearance as recurring considerations. Choose a base that is level and appropriate for the model, and position it where normal movement will not strike the pole, reflector, controls, fuel connection, or mounting hardware.

Keep chairs, tables, toys, sports equipment, shopping bags, and temporary storage outside the required zone. Do not place a freestanding heater where a door, gate, or service path can push into it. For a mounted unit, confirm that the supporting surface and hardware meet the manufacturer’s installation instructions before operating it.

Fuel-burning models and partial enclosures

For a fuel-burning heater, the key question is not whether the patio feels “mostly outside.” It is whether the exact manual permits the actual combination of walls, roof, screens, and open area. The reviewed Mr. Heater manual, for example, allows only specified partial-enclosure arrangements and sets restrictions on side walls and a stated permanently open portion for one configuration. Those conditions belong to that appliance and cannot be generalized.

If the manual does not clearly describe your patio, pergola, porch, or gazebo, treat the setup as unresolved. Do not operate the heater until the manufacturer or a qualified professional confirms an approved arrangement, or move the heater to an unquestionably open location.

Local codes and professional review

Manufacturer instructions may require installation in accordance with local codes or referenced fuel-gas codes. Those requirements can vary by jurisdiction, fuel, mounting method, and structure. A manual-based clearance check is not a permit determination.

Contact the local building or fire authority when the installation is permanent, mounted, connected to a fixed fuel supply, or located near a building. A qualified installer can also review structural support, fuel routing, and the relationship between the heater and the patio cover. Keep the manual available so the reviewer is evaluating the correct model rather than a generic category.

Choosing a heater for a particular space

If you are still selecting a heater, compare products against the installation problem first. A model’s fuel type or marketing label does not establish that it will fit your patio.

Decision point Question to answer before purchase
Enclosure approval Does the manual expressly permit the intended open, covered, screened, or partial-enclosure configuration?
Overhead and side clearances Can the available ceiling, beams, walls, posts, and furnishings meet the model’s measured distances?
Airflow Can combustion-air inlets, ventilation openings, burner areas, and exhaust paths remain unobstructed during normal use?
Fuel or power arrangement Does the site support the model’s fuel or power requirements without placing connections in traffic or near combustible materials?
Surface and mounting Is there a stable floor or a structure capable of supporting the specified mount?
Operating limits Does the manual impose wind or other conditions that the proposed location cannot reliably meet?

Do not rank one heater as safer solely because another model has a smaller published clearance. The values may be measured for different directions, materials, outputs, or installation arrangements.

Unsafe assumptions to avoid

  • “All patio heaters need the same distance.” They do not; the exact manual controls.
  • “A non-combustible wall means clearance is unnecessary.” Airflow and exhaust space may still be required.
  • “An open window makes a garage acceptable.” CPSC warns that doors and windows do not provide enough ventilation to prevent lethal carbon-monoxide buildup.
  • “A pergola is automatically open enough.” Beams, shade panels, vines, and curtains can create overhead or side obstructions.
  • “A screen is just air.” Screening can restrict ventilation and may itself be combustible.
  • “A measurement from another heater’s manual will work.” Clearance tables are model-specific.
  • “If it fits today, it is safe all season.” Added furniture, decorations, plants, covers, or stored items can invalidate the original clearance.

When the proposed location fails

Stop and relocate the heater if any required distance cannot be measured, if an overhead or side surface falls inside the prohibited zone, if airflow openings would be blocked, if the unit would sit in a traffic path, or if the manual does not approve the enclosure. Do not solve a failed clearance by adding an improvised heat shield, closing a curtain, opening a door, or relying on a fan unless the manufacturer specifically provides that method.

The practical choices are to move the heater into a fully open area, remove or redesign the obstructing structure, or select a different model whose instructions match the site. If none of those options is clear, obtain model-specific guidance from the manufacturer or a qualified installer before use.

A final pre-use checklist

  • The model manual is present and matches the installed appliance.
  • Overhead, side, rear, below, and front clearances match the manual for the actual configuration.
  • Combustion-air inlets, ventilation openings, burner areas, and exhaust paths are clear.
  • The heater is outdoors or in a partial enclosure expressly permitted by the manual.
  • The location is stable and outside walkways, door swings, and impact zones.
  • Furniture, plants, umbrellas, curtains, decorations, and stored goods remain outside the required clearances.
  • Any applicable local code or installation requirement has been addressed.
