Clean, dry headcovers can stay on the clubheads, but wet equipment, hot vehicles, freezing spaces and damp outbuildings create the conditions that damage metal, epoxy, grips and bag materials.
What an extended closure can do to golf equipment
A golf set can appear fine when it is put away and still develop problems while unused. Moisture trapped in grooves, under a headcover or inside a closed bag can encourage corrosion on steel. It can also create stale odors in fabric and padding. Heat and cold are a separate risk: prolonged heat can accelerate grip deterioration and place stress on adhesives and epoxy, while freezing conditions can make materials less forgiving. Direct sunlight adds ultraviolet exposure that can harden or degrade grips over time.

The safest approach is preventive rather than restorative. Remove dirt and oils, eliminate moisture, control the storage environment and inspect the set periodically instead of leaving it untouched until the course reopens.

1. Empty and clean the golf bag
Remove balls, tees, gloves, scorecards, food wrappers and any wet clothing from every pocket. Shake out loose grass and sand, then wipe pocket interiors and the outside of the bag with a suitable damp cloth. Allow the fabric, zippers and padding to dry fully before closing the pockets. A damp towel or forgotten glove can keep the inside of a bag humid for weeks.

2. Clean each clubhead
- Wipe the face, sole, back and hosel with a damp cloth to remove soil, grass residue and oils.
- Use a soft nylon or other suitable soft brush to clear dirt from grooves. Brush along the groove direction rather than attacking the finish with a hard or abrasive tool.
- Keep water away from any opening where it could remain trapped, and do not leave a club submerged.
- Wipe the head again with a clean cloth so no loosened dirt or cleaning residue remains.
Cleveland Golf/Dunlop care guidance emphasizes wiping equipment with a damp cloth. The goal is a clean surface with as little retained moisture as possible, not a prolonged soak.
3. Wipe shafts and inspect the ferrules
Run a damp cloth down each shaft, then dry it with a separate clean cloth. Look closely at the ferrule, the small collar above the clubhead. A ferrule that is cracked, loose or visibly separating should be noted for repair before the club returns to play. Do not try to force a loose ferrule back into place during storage.
4. Clean grips using the material-specific method
Grips collect sunscreen, skin oils, dust and dirt. Those contaminants can make a grip feel slick even when the rubber or polymer itself is still sound. Golf Pride’s general care guidance supports cleaning with soap, water and a soft brush, followed by thorough drying. That general method must be adjusted for porous polyurethane grips, which are more sensitive to pressure, immersion and aggressive cleaners.

How to clean different grip materials safely
| Grip situation | Appropriate method | Do not do |
|---|---|---|
| Typical rubber or non-porous synthetic grip | Use water with a mild soap, work with a soft brush or cloth, rinse away residue and dry completely. | Do not use an abrasive brush, leave soap on the surface or store the grip while damp. |
| Porous polyurethane grip | TourMARK advises wiping gently with a soft damp cloth. Use only light pressure and remove surface dirt in small passes. | Never immerse the grip. Excessive pressure, strong soap or abrasive brushing can damage the tacky coating. |
| CADERO grip or another manufacturer-approved synthetic material | Use water or the manufacturer’s approved synthetic detergent, then wipe away residue and dry thoroughly. | Do not use thinner, benzene, toluene or other strong solvents. |
| Unknown material | Start with a lightly damp, soft cloth and check the grip maker’s care instructions before using soap or a brush. | Do not assume that a method safe for rubber is safe for polyurethane or another porous finish. |
TourMARK’s specific warning is unambiguous: “Never immerse the grip in water.” That matters because water can enter a porous surface and remain there even when the outside feels dry. If you cannot identify the material, choose the least aggressive method and consult the grip manufacturer’s instructions.

Avoid solvents and harsh chemistry
Thinner, benzene, toluene and similar strong solvents can attack grip coatings and change the texture that provides traction. They can also leave a residue that feels slippery. A cleaner that removes grime quickly is not necessarily compatible with the grip material. If a product label does not clearly state that it is safe for the grip, do not use it.
Dry every component before storage
Drying is a separate step, not something to assume will happen inside a closed bag. Use clean, dry towels on clubheads, grooves, shafts and grips. Leave the clubs and headcovers in a dry, shaded, ventilated area until no surface feels cool or damp. Pay particular attention to:
- Water remaining in grooves or around the sole and hosel.
- Dampness under a headcover.
- Moisture in the grip texture after cleaning.
- Bag pockets, dividers, shoulder straps and padding.
- Headcovers that were washed or used in wet conditions.
Only put a headcover back on when both the cover and the clubhead are dry. A clean but damp cover can hold moisture against metal and defeat the purpose of cleaning.

| Location | Temperature stability | Moisture and ventilation | Sunlight and physical risks | Assessment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Indoor closet or room away from windows | Usually the most stable option | Generally easier to keep dry; allow normal air circulation | Low UV exposure; protect the bag from being knocked over | Preferred when clean and dry |
| Climate-controlled interior storage area | Stable when the room remains occupied and conditioned | Low risk if the area is dry | Low UV exposure | Preferred |
| Garage | Can swing widely with outdoor weather | May be humid or damp, especially near an open door or concrete floor | Sunlight, dust and accidental abrasion are possible | Use only if it remains cool, dry, shaded and reasonably temperature-controlled |
| Car trunk or passenger compartment | Large heat and cold swings; can become very hot even when outside air feels moderate | Condensation and wet carpeting can add moisture | Limited ventilation and risk of the bag tipping or being crushed | Not suitable for months of storage |
| Attic | Often reaches extreme heat or cold | Air quality and humidity can vary | Dust, roof leaks and difficult handling increase risk | Avoid for an extended closure |
| Damp shed or outbuilding | Outdoor temperature swings | Highest risk of persistent humidity and condensation | Dust, pests and abrasion are additional concerns | Avoid unless the space is demonstrably dry and stable |
Do not interpret “indoors” as automatically safe. A heated attic, uninsulated garage or room with a recurring leak can be worse than a cooler interior space. Compare candidate locations by temperature stability, humidity, sunlight, ventilation and the chance that the bag will tip or rub against another object.
Pack and position the clubs for a long break
Use clean, dry headcovers
Headcovers limit dust and abrasion on clubheads. Inspect them for damp lining, mud or trapped grass, and clean them according to their own care instructions. They must be fully dry before use. If a cover is wet, leave it off while the club dries rather than sealing moisture against the finish.
Keep the bag upright and protected from abrasion
Place the bag where it cannot fall, be stepped on or be pressed against a sharp edge. An upright position reduces unnecessary pressure on clubs and makes monthly inspection easier. Keep the bag away from direct sunlight and from heat sources such as radiators, heaters and hot-water equipment.

Do not seal damp equipment in an airtight space
A closed bag can retain moisture from cleaning, rain or condensation. Complete the drying process first. Once everything is dry, close the bag normally to keep out dust, but do not use a sealed container as a substitute for drying or a stable room.

Inspection schedule during the closure
Monthly condition check
For a long closure, inspect the set about once a month. You are looking for early signs that the storage environment or a component has changed:
- Orange or brown spots on clubheads, grooves or exposed steel.
- Dampness, condensation or a musty odor in the bag or headcovers.
- Cracked, loose or separating ferrules.
- Bent, dented or cracked shafts.
- Grips that feel shiny, hard, split, loose or slippery.
- Bag fabric, zippers or padding showing mildew, moisture damage or abrasion.
If you find dampness, move the set to a dry indoor area, remove headcovers and open the affected pockets until everything is dry. Surface dirt can be wiped away, but suspected structural damage should not be hidden under a cover.
Annual grip-wear review
Golf Pride recommends checking grip wear at least once a year. The calendar is only a minimum checkpoint; a grip that loses tack, develops cracks or feels unsafe should be replaced sooner. A long closure is a useful time to review the entire set because changes are easier to notice when every club is examined together.
When a grip or club needs replacement or repair
Grip replacement signs
- The surface has become noticeably shiny and no longer regains its normal tack after proper cleaning.
- Longitudinal cracks, splits, peeling or hardened areas are visible.
- The grip twists, slides or feels loose on the shaft.
- The texture is uneven because the outer coating has worn through.
- You must squeeze much harder than before to keep the club secure.
Cleaning removes contamination; it does not restore a worn or damaged grip. Replace a grip when the material itself has deteriorated, and have a qualified club technician handle regripping if you are not equipped to do it safely.

Club repair warning signs
A bent or cracked shaft, a loose head, a ferrule that will not stay seated or corrosion that appears to penetrate the finish warrants professional assessment before play. Do not hit balls with a club that may be structurally compromised. A cosmetic mark and a structural crack are not the same problem, and a technician can determine whether the club is safe.
Prepare the equipment when the course reopens
- Remove each club and wipe away settled dust with a clean, dry cloth.
- Inspect clubfaces and grooves for rust, residue or damage that was not present before storage.
- Check every grip for secure attachment, tack, cracks, splits, hardening and unusual slipperiness.
- Examine shafts, ferrules and clubheads for bends, cracks or looseness.
- Air out the bag and headcovers if they have developed any odor or retained moisture.
- Replace damaged grips and arrange professional repair for any questionable club before returning it to play.
Do not try to disguise a slippery grip with oil or a coating. Restore safe traction with the correct cleaning method or replace the grip.
Troubleshooting common storage problems
| Symptom after storage | Likely concern | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Orange spots on a steel head or in grooves | Moisture-related surface corrosion | Separate the club, dry it and remove only superficial residue with an appropriate non-abrasive method. Seek professional advice if corrosion is deep or the finish is damaged. |
| Musty smell from the bag | Moisture retained in fabric, pockets or padding | Empty the bag, open pockets and dry it in a shaded, ventilated indoor area. Do not put clubs back until the source of moisture is gone. |
| Grip feels slick after washing | Soap residue, remaining oils or a worn coating | Rinse or wipe away residue using the grip maker’s approved method, dry completely and reassess. Replace the grip if tack does not return or if the surface is damaged. |
| Grip is hard, shiny or split | Material aging, heat or wear | Replace the grip rather than relying on additional cleaning. |
| Ferrule is loose or cracked | Possible movement at the head or ferrule deterioration | Do not play the club until it has been inspected and repaired. |
| Headcover is damp inside | Moisture trapped against the clubhead | Remove it, dry the cover and club separately, then inspect the head for corrosion. |
A simple closure checklist
- Bag pockets emptied and wiped.
- Clubheads, soles and grooves cleaned.
- Shafts and ferrules wiped and inspected.
- Grips cleaned with a method suitable for their material.
- All clubs, grips, headcovers and bag components completely dry.
- Headcovers clean and dry before being fitted.
- Set stored upright in a cool, dry, shaded indoor location.
- Monthly inspection scheduled for a long closure.
- Annual grip-wear review recorded.
- Damaged grips or clubs marked for replacement or professional repair.
Bottom line for a long course closure
The reliable routine is uncomplicated: clean before storage, dry everything completely, keep the set away from heat, cold, moisture and direct sunlight, and inspect it instead of forgetting it. Material matters most when cleaning grips; porous polyurethane must not be immersed, and strong solvents should never be used. When the course reopens, restore playability with a final inspection and replace anything that no longer provides secure traction or structural confidence.
