Overnight Construction on Illinois 2 Near Sterling Starts Oct. 7, 2026

IDOT plans overnight patching on Illinois 2 east of Sterling from Oct. 7 through an expected completion by Oct. 21, with one lane closed at a time.

Overnight pavement patching on Illinois 2 is scheduled to begin Oct. 7, 2026, weather permitting, just east of Sterling in Lee and Whiteside counties. Crews will work on both northbound and southbound lanes, closing one lane at a time. IDOT expects the work to be completed by Oct. 21.

Where the Illinois 2 work is happening

The work zone is just east of Sterling, between Mound Hill Road and Prairieville-Palmyra Road. The project covers pavement patching on both directions of Illinois 2. See the Illinois Department of Transportation announcement for the project notice.

Schedule and lane closures

IDOT announced the work on Oct. 6, 2026. It is scheduled to start Wednesday, Oct. 7, weather permitting, and is expected to finish by Oct. 21. Work will take place overnight, but IDOT has not provided exact nightly start or end times. The completion date is an expectation, not a guaranteed deadline.

Crews will patch northbound and southbound lanes, with one lane closed at a time. The notice does not specify a contractor, project cost, detour, or route-specific travel-time estimate.

What drivers should expect and do

Traffic may slow or stop as crews work. IDOT advises motorists to allow extra time for trips through the area and consider an alternate route when feasible. As the department put it in its Oct. 6 announcement, “Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area and be prepared for slow and stopped traffic.”

  • Watch for changing conditions, work-zone signs, workers, and equipment.
  • Follow posted speed limits and other directions in the work zone.
  • Avoid using mobile devices while driving and stay alert.
  • If your trip crosses this stretch overnight, allow for possible delays; use an alternate route only if it is practical for your trip.
