Choose a patio heater when you need controlled, directed warmth in a particular seating area. Choose a fire pit when an open flame and a social focal point are as important as heat. Neither category is automatically warmer or cheaper: comfort depends on the exact appliance, fuel, operating setting, wind, seating distance and current local energy prices.

Use the model’s installation instructions and your local fire and building rules as the final authority. The comparison below shows how to make that choice without treating a BTU rating or an advertised price as a guarantee of real-world comfort or cost.

How patio heaters and fire pits deliver heat

A patio heater is built to send heat toward people or a defined zone. Depending on the design, it may use an electric heating element, a propane burner or a natural-gas burner. A fire pit exposes a flame in a bowl, table or other enclosure. Its warmth radiates outward from the fire, so the experience changes substantially with seating position, wind and the pit’s diameter and construction.

These are different heat patterns, not simply two appliances with competing BTU numbers. A rated input describes the energy supplied to the appliance; it does not tell you how much warmth reaches the chair where someone is sitting. Reflectors, guards, burner geometry, the height of the heat source, wind, fuel pressure and operating setting all affect the result.

Directed warmth from a patio heater

Many freestanding, wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted heaters aim heat at a zone. That can make a narrow seating arrangement feel more consistent than an open flame, particularly when the heater can be positioned close to the people who need warmth. A directional design can also leave areas outside the intended zone comparatively cool.

Shared radiant warmth from a fire pit

A fire pit generally makes the flame the center of the gathering. People seated around the perimeter may receive different levels of radiant heat, and the side facing away from the fire may feel much cooler. Wind can carry heat and smoke away from the group. A larger flame or pit is not a guaranteed improvement for every seat; distance and the pit’s shape still matter.

Patio heater and fire pit comparison

Decision axis Patio heater Fire pit What to check
Warmth Dedicated heating appliance; output and coverage vary by model and fuel. Radiant warmth from a flame; effective heat varies by pit design, seating position and wind. Compare the exact model’s input rating and stated coverage with your seating layout. Do not treat BTU as a comfort guarantee.
Direction and layout Often directs heat toward people or a defined zone. Usually a shared focal point; warmth changes by seat and wind direction. Sketch chairs, tables, walls and prevailing wind before choosing.
Fuel and setup Electric, propane or natural gas. Each requires different connections, storage and placement. Wood, propane or natural gas, and in some designs a liquid fuel. Confirm power or fuel access, refill or delivery arrangements, storage and local restrictions.
Running cost Actual electrical draw or fuel consumption multiplied by your local rate. Actual burn rate or gas draw multiplied by the current local price. Include electricity charges, cylinder refills, delivery fees and the selected operating setting.
Safety Hot surfaces, fuel connections and required clearances; fuel-burning units are for outdoor use. Open flame, hot surfaces, sparks, smoke and fuel-specific hazards. Follow the listing, manual, recall notices and local fire rules for the exact model.
Experience and upkeep No open flame. Electric models avoid propane smoke and odor. Flame-centered atmosphere; wood adds smoke, ash and tending. Decide whether predictable heat or fire-side activity is the primary purpose.

Patio heater types and what each requires

Electric patio heaters

Electric models need a suitable outdoor-rated power source and a location where the cord, plug and controls will remain dry as required by the manufacturer. They avoid storing or refilling a fuel cylinder and avoid propane smoke and odor, a point noted in Consumer Reports’ December 9, 2020 category overview. The practical trade-off is dependence on the circuit’s capacity and the appliance’s electrical draw. Check the heater’s wattage, the circuit rating and whether the installation calls for a weather-resistant receptacle, dedicated circuit or hardwiring.

Electric heat is convenient where power is already available, such as a properly wired patio or balcony. It is less convenient when an extension cord would cross a walkway or when the available circuit cannot support the load. Never assume an indoor-rated cord, outlet or heater is acceptable outdoors; the product listing and local electrical requirements control.

Propane patio heaters

Propane units use a cylinder and therefore need a stable, ventilated outdoor location for the appliance and safe storage and handling of spare cylinders. Refilling, exchanging or transporting cylinders adds recurring work and cost. Check the manual for the permitted cylinder size, hose routing, regulator requirements, anti-tilt shutoff and minimum clearances.

Portable propane heaters can be useful when you want to move heat between outdoor seating areas, but mobility does not remove clearance requirements. A unit that is stable on a paved surface may be unsafe on soft ground, near a walkway or where a child or pet can knock it over.

Natural-gas patio heaters

Natural-gas heaters require a suitable gas connection and a permanently planned location unless the specific product is approved for another arrangement. Installation may require a licensed professional, gas-line sizing, shutoff access and inspection under local rules. They can avoid cylinder changes, but the installation cost and fixed location can be significant. Verify that the appliance is listed for the intended outdoor location and that the gas connection and ventilation arrangement match the manual.

Fire pit designs are not interchangeable

Wood-burning pits

Wood fires provide flame, smoke, embers and ash as well as heat. You need a legal fuel source, a safe place for dry wood, a spark-control method where required, tools for tending the fire and a way to extinguish and dispose of ash. Wind can move embers beyond the pit, and smoke can affect neighboring properties or people with respiratory sensitivities. Local rules may restrict wood burning during dry or windy conditions or prohibit it entirely in some areas.

Gas fire pits

Propane and natural-gas fire pits offer a controllable flame without wood ash. Propane versions still need cylinder handling and storage; natural-gas versions need a properly installed connection and a fixed location. A table-style enclosure can have hot surfaces in places that look like ordinary furniture, so keep the manufacturer’s heat-shield and clearance requirements with the appliance rather than relying on the appearance of the unit.

Liquid-fuel tabletop pits

Liquid-fuel tabletop products require particular caution because spilled or pooled fuel can ignite as a fire larger than expected. On July 16, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported more than two dozen incidents involving named Houswise tabletop fire pits, including seven injuries with third-degree burns, and identified at least 53,500 units. The agency said: “CPSC urges consumers to stop using the tabletop fire pits immediately and dispose of them. Do not sell or give away these hazardous products.” That warning applies to the named models; it is not evidence that every fire pit has the same defect. Check the exact model against current CPSC warnings and recalls before buying or using a liquid-fuel pit.

Which feels warmer at your seats?

There is no reliable category-wide winner from the available evidence. A fair comparison starts with the people and furniture, not the product label.

  1. Map the seating. Mark every chair, table edge, wall and roof or canopy on a simple plan. Note where people will sit most often rather than measuring the entire patio.
  2. Identify wind exposure. Record the direction of prevailing wind and the locations of screens or walls. A fire pit may lose heat and carry smoke downwind; a heater’s directed output can also be disrupted by strong crosswinds.
  3. Compare the manufacturer’s claims. Record the exact model, fuel, input rating and stated coverage. Treat coverage as a manufacturer specification for its stated conditions, not a guarantee for your site.
  4. Check distance and orientation. A chair that is too far from a fire pit may receive little radiant heat, while a chair directly under or too close to a heater may violate clearance rules. Place the appliance where the manual allows and where the warm zone overlaps the seats.
  5. Decide whether uniformity or atmosphere matters more. If everyone needs predictable warmth while facing a table, a directional heater may fit better. If gathering around a shared centerpiece is the purpose, a fire pit may be the better experience even when warmth varies by seat.

Do not convert BTU to a promised “heated area” without the appliance’s design and installation context. The reviewed sources do not establish a controlled, like-for-like test between the two categories.

How to compare running cost honestly

No dependable current hourly figure applies to every patio heater and fire pit. Use the appliance’s actual consumption and your own utility or fuel prices.

Electric heater calculation

Obtain the heater’s operating wattage for the setting you intend to use. Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000, then multiply by the number of operating hours and your electricity rate. Add any applicable delivery or demand charges if they materially change the marginal cost. If the heater has several settings, calculate each setting separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hourly electricity cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × electricity price per kWh

Propane appliance calculation

Use the manufacturer’s fuel-consumption or burn-rate information at the selected setting. Multiply the amount consumed per hour by the price you actually pay for a refill or exchange, converted to a per-unit fuel price. Include delivery charges and the cost of maintaining a spare cylinder if that is part of your setup.

Natural-gas appliance calculation

Use the appliance’s stated gas input and the billing unit used by your utility. Multiply consumption by the current rate, then account for any fixed installation or service costs separately from the marginal cost of an evening’s use.

Wood-burning pit calculation

Measure or estimate the amount of wood used for a typical session and multiply it by your delivered or locally purchased price. Include kindling, fire starters, storage and any disposal or ash-management supplies. Because burn rate changes with wood species, moisture, wind and tending, record a realistic session rather than assuming a constant rate.

Safety rules that apply before first use

Clearance, ventilation and supervision

The National Fire Protection Association’s October 2020 fact sheet states: “Keep anything that can burn at least 3 ft (1 m) away from heating equipment.” It also advises turning off portable heaters when the area is unoccupied, following the manufacturer’s clearance and ventilation instructions, and never using propane heaters in enclosed locations. That fact sheet summarizes NFPA 1, 2018 edition, and is not a substitute for the current code enforced by your local authority having jurisdiction.

Do not infer that a roof, screened porch or pergola makes a fuel-burning heater or fire pit safe. A covered structure can trap combustion products and heat, and its ceiling, curtains, siding and furniture are combustible. Use only a product whose instructions expressly permit that setting, and meet every vertical, side and overhead clearance. If the manual does not clearly permit the location, choose another location or another appliance.

Freestanding patio heaters

Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) guidance for Ontario states: “PATIO HEATERS ARE DESIGNED FOR OUTDOOR USE ONLY.” TSSA also advises a stable surface and an anti-tilt feature for freestanding units and says not to leave patio heaters unattended. Those statements are Ontario guidance; your jurisdiction may impose different or additional requirements.

  • Place the base on a level, stable surface that will not settle or tip.
  • Keep combustibles, traffic routes and children’s play areas outside the clearances in the manual.
  • Inspect hoses, regulators, cords, plugs and guards before each season and after moving the appliance.
  • Turn the unit off whenever the area is empty, during severe weather or when a fault is suspected.
  • Never operate a fuel-burning patio heater in a garage, tent, enclosed room or other unapproved space.

Fire pits and open flame

  • Confirm that the pit, fuel and intended location are legal under local fire restrictions, property rules and any permit requirements.
  • Keep people, furniture, overhanging branches and combustible structures outside the manufacturer’s required clearances.
  • Use the specified spark screen, heat shield, shutoff valve and ignition procedure.
  • Keep an appropriate extinguisher, hose or other approved extinguishing method immediately available.
  • Never leave a fire unattended; fully extinguish it using the method in the instructions and verify that ashes or media are cool before disposal.
  • For wood, monitor sparks and wind. For gas, inspect connections and shut the supply off if the flame behaves abnormally.
  • For liquid-fuel products, never refill while a flame or hot surface remains. Check current CPSC notices for the exact model.

Recalls and model-level checks

Safety is not determined by category alone. In 2018, CPSC recalled about 58,000 Hampton Bay Cross Ridge G-FTB51057B outdoor gas fire-pit tables because a missing heat shield created a burn hazard; the remedy was a repair kit. That historical recall does not show that all gas fire pits share the defect. It demonstrates why you should search the model number, read the installation instructions and confirm that any recall remedy has been completed.

Before purchase or installation, record the manufacturer, model and serial number. Check the current CPSC recall and warning database, the manufacturer’s safety notices and your local authority’s fire guidance. Recheck after buying used equipment, because a previous owner may not have completed a repair or may have replaced a component with an unapproved part.

Placement and installation workflow

  1. Start with the site rules. Ask the local fire authority, building department, landlord or homeowners’ association about open flames, gas connections, electrical work, setbacks and seasonal restrictions.
  2. Measure the proposed location. Record floor dimensions, ceiling height, nearby walls, railings, furniture and vegetation. Compare those measurements with every clearance in the appliance manual.
  3. Confirm the service. For electric equipment, verify voltage, outdoor receptacle protection and circuit capacity. For gas, confirm cylinder access or have a qualified professional assess the natural-gas connection.
  4. Plan movement and storage. Decide where cylinders, wood, covers and extinguishing equipment will go when the appliance is not operating. Keep fuel away from ignition sources and protect it as the instructions require.
  5. Install exactly as listed. Assemble guards, heat shields, anti-tilt devices and shutoffs; do not remove a safety component to make the unit fit.
  6. Perform a cold inspection. Check stability, connections, cords, valves, screens and clearances before lighting or energizing the appliance.
  7. Run a supervised first session. Use the lowest practical setting, watch for abnormal heat, odor, flame behavior, smoke or movement, and shut down immediately if anything differs from the manual.

Maintenance and seasonal decisions

Patio heaters

Keep reflectors, guards and air openings free of dust and debris as the manual directs. Inspect fuel hoses and fittings for damage, protect electrical connections from moisture and make sure the anti-tilt mechanism still operates. Store or cover the appliance only in the manner approved by its instructions; trapping moisture or obstructing vents can create a later hazard.

Fire pits

Remove ash only when completely cool and store it in a noncombustible container if the local rules require one. Clean burner ports, media, screens and drain paths according to the product instructions. Inspect gas hoses, valves and connections before the first use each season. Replace cracked glass, damaged screens or warped heat shields rather than continuing to operate the pit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pause use during high winds, drought restrictions, severe weather or any condition in which sparks, smoke or heat could reach people or structures. Seasonal fire bans and local air-quality rules can override a product’s normal operating instructions.

Choosing by scenario

Your priority Usually the better starting point Why Confirm before buying
Warmth focused on a dining or conversation zone Directional patio heater Heat can be aimed at the occupied area without making an open flame the centerpiece. Coverage claim, mounting position, clearances, power or fuel access.
Fire-centered social experience Fire pit The flame provides a shared visual focus and an activity for the group. Fuel legality, smoke and spark management, hot-surface clearances and extinguishing plan.
No cylinder storage Electric heater or fixed natural-gas installation These options avoid portable propane-cylinder handling, but they have different wiring or installation requirements. Electrical capacity or professional gas-line assessment and total installation cost.
Frequent changes between seating areas Approved portable heater A movable design can follow the seating layout. Stable surface, anti-tilt protection, safe movement while cold and clearance at every destination.
Wood-fire atmosphere Wood-burning pit, where legal Provides visible flame, smoke and ember activity that gas and electric appliances do not replicate. Burn restrictions, spark control, wood storage, ash disposal and neighbor impact.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have you chosen the seats that must feel warm, rather than trying to heat the entire property?
  • Do you know the exact model, fuel type, input or electrical draw and stated coverage?
  • Can the appliance be placed while meeting every side, overhead and ventilation clearance?
  • Is the surface stable, and are anti-tilt, heat-shield and shutoff features present and working?
  • Have you confirmed local fire, gas, electrical, property and seasonal rules?
  • Can you calculate a session cost from your actual consumption and current local rate?
  • Do you have a storage, supervision and extinguishing plan?
  • Have you checked the exact model for current recalls and warnings?

When these checks favor controlled placement and repeatable warmth, select a listed patio heater that fits the available service. When the gathering experience, flame and fire-side routine are central, select a fire pit whose fuel, clearances and local permissions work for the site. In either case, let the appliance manual and local authority requirements decide the final placement.
