It is usually the better fit for a tight patio, occasional cooking or a project that should avoid extensive utility work. Choose a fuller outdoor kitchen when you will regularly use supporting facilities such as a sink, refrigerator, enclosed storage, side burner or a dedicated preparation area—and your site can accommodate the footprint, circulation and infrastructure.
A modular cabinet run can sit between the two. The decision is not simply built-in versus freestanding; it is a comparison of scope. Appliance, cabinets, countertop, installation, gas and electrical connections, patio work, permits, delivery and weather protection can all be separate costs. What is the difference between an outdoor kitchen and a grill station?
A grill station is organized around one cooking appliance. It normally provides a grill, a heat-resistant landing area and enough counter space to season food, set down trays and serve. Depending on the design, it may also include a small amount of storage, a side burner or a compact refrigerator, but those are additions rather than the defining purpose.
An outdoor kitchen treats cooking as one part of a larger work area. Its cabinets and counters support preparation, cooking, serving and cleanup, with optional equipment such as a sink, refrigerator, ice maker, side burner, pizza oven, lighting and waste storage. The extra capability brings a larger footprint, more utility connections and more components that must be protected outdoors.

| Question | Grill station | Outdoor kitchen |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Grilling with a convenient landing and prep surface | Preparing, cooking, serving, storing and sometimes cleaning outdoors |
| Typical layout | Short straight run, compact island or modular cabinet section | Longer straight run, L-shaped plan or U-shaped plan with several work zones |
| Appliances | One main grill; other appliances are optional | Grill plus selected appliances such as sink, refrigeration, side burner or specialty cooker |
| Infrastructure | Fuel connection and possibly a small electrical run | Potential gas, electrical, water, drainage, lighting and structural or patio work |
| Best match | Limited space, seasonal or occasional grilling, simpler construction | Frequent outdoor meals, larger household, entertaining and a site that can support utilities |
Neither label guarantees a particular quality or price. A highly finished grill island can cost more than a basic outdoor kitchen, while a modest kitchen can be assembled from a few modular units. Define the equipment and construction scope first, then compare quotations.
Which option fits your cooking habits?
Start with the tasks you will perform, not the number of appliances that can be displayed in a catalogue. Write down what happens during a typical meal: where ingredients are stored, where they are washed, how far serving dishes travel, and whether people need to pass behind the cook.
| Your pattern | Likely fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Grilling a few times each month, with most preparation indoors | Grill station | You gain a useful outdoor landing surface without duplicating indoor storage and refrigeration. |
| Weekly meals for a family, with frequent chopping and plating outside | Expanded station or modular kitchen | Additional counter, enclosed storage and perhaps refrigeration reduce trips indoors. |
| Entertaining groups and serving several courses outdoors | Outdoor kitchen | Separate prep, cooking and serving zones keep the cook working while guests circulate. |
| Need for a sink because carrying dirty pans inside is the main frustration | Outdoor kitchen, if plumbing is practical | A sink can solve the problem, but it adds water, drainage and winterization responsibilities. |
| Rental property, uncertain future use or a patio that may be redesigned | Freestanding or modular grill station | Less permanent construction preserves flexibility and limits sunk infrastructure. |
Do not add an appliance merely because a cabinet can hold it. A sink, refrigerator or specialty cooker earns its space only if it will be used often enough to justify plumbing, electrical capacity, cleaning and weather protection.

Measure the usable patio, not just the wall where cabinets could stand. Mark doors, steps, property boundaries, roof posts and the path people use to reach the house, pool or garden. Then reserve a clear route around the cooking area and enough room for someone to open a door or drawer without blocking that route.
Compact straight runs
A single run is the most forgiving arrangement for a small patio. A grill station can keep the run short, while a modular kitchen can add only the cabinets you genuinely need. Place preparation and serving surfaces beside the grill rather than forcing people to work behind it. Homes & Gardens identifies single runs as a good match for smaller patios.
L-shaped plans
An L shape can put the grill and hot appliances on one leg and preparation, serving or storage on the other. This arrangement can separate the cooking zone from the social zone, but the inside corner consumes space and must not become a pinch point. Homes & Gardens describes L-shaped layouts as useful for separating cooking and social areas.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
U-shaped plans
A U shape creates a contained work area, but it needs generous clearances on the open side and around the appliance doors. It is generally suited to a larger garden rather than a narrow patio. If guests will stand inside the U while the grill is operating, the layout has failed its circulation test.
Use four functional zones
Lowe’s planning guidance recommends distinguishing preparation, cooking, serving and entertainment zones. The exact boundaries can overlap, but the traffic should not. Keep guests from crossing directly in front of the cook, and give serving dishes a landing surface that does not compete with raw ingredients.
Ventilation and smoke direction matter in every layout. Lowe’s gives a general caution of at least 10 feet from combustible materials; that is not a universal installation dimension. The selected appliance manual, local building and fire rules, and the authority having jurisdiction control the actual clearance. Check prevailing wind so smoke is not routinely carried toward doors, windows or a seating area.
Outdoor kitchen and grill-station costs: compare the same scope
There is no single market-wide price for either project. Published figures describe different footprints, finishes and inclusions, so they cannot be averaged into a meaningful universal number. Use each range only with its stated assumptions and obtain a current, itemized local estimate.
Published examples with their stated scope
| Source and date | Scope | Published figure | Important exclusions or assumptions |
|---|---|---|---|
| CasaBella Outdoor, October 2026 | 7–10-foot island with a 36-inch built-in grill; cabinetry only | $9,800–$13,400 MSRP | Installation, gas and electrical work, patio or pad, permits and delivery excluded. |
| CasaBella Outdoor, October 2026 | Same island scope with grill and appliances | $16,800–$26,300 MSRP | Same exclusions; this is a catalogue MSRP, not an installed-project quote. |
| CasaBella Outdoor, October 2026 | Same scope with a typical estimated granite countertop | $18,000–$29,400 | Installation, utilities, patio or pad, permits and delivery excluded. |
| Homes & Gardens, 2026 | Broad editorial categories for outdoor kitchens | $2,000–$8,000 basic; $8,000–$20,000 mid-range; $20,000–$100,000+ high-end | Ranges are broad and depend on utility connections, groundwork, structural support, drainage and custom fabrication. |
| HomeGuide figures reported by Renology, October 2026 | Installed built-in grill island | $3,000–$10,000 | Assumes an existing patio and utility lines; attributed to HomeGuide through Renology. |
| HomeGuide figures reported by Renology, October 2026 | Custom outdoor kitchen | $10,000–$35,000 | Assumes an existing patio and utility lines; attributed to HomeGuide through Renology. |
The CasaBella figures are useful for showing how the scope changes as cabinets, appliances and a countertop are added. They do not include the work that often determines a real project total. The Homes & Gardens and HomeGuide-derived ranges cover wider project types and should not be combined mechanically with the CasaBella MSRP.

- Grill, side burner and other appliances, including model and fuel type
- Cabinet boxes, doors, hardware and weather-rated construction
- Countertop material, edge treatment and cutouts
- Foundation, patio extension, leveling or structural support
- Natural-gas, propane, electrical, water and drainage connections
- Labor for assembly, installation, testing and finish work
- Permits, inspections, engineering and utility-company fees
- Delivery, crane or difficult-access charges
- Lighting, cover, ventilation components and weather protection
Confirm whether tax, demolition, winterization and future service access are included. A low cabinet price can become an expensive project if the patio must be opened or a long utility run has been omitted.
Plan fuel, electrical, water and drainage before construction
Utilities should be coordinated as soon as the appliance layout is fixed. Joanne Bull, design manager at KönigOutdoor, told Homes & Gardens: “Utilities should be coordinated as soon as the appliance layout is fixed, ideally before paving, drainage and landscaping begin.” Running services after finishes are installed can mean cutting concrete, moving planting and repairing waterproofing.
Natural gas or propane
Natural gas requires a permanent line sized for the selected appliances. Propane is not tied to fixed pipework, which can provide more flexibility, but cylinders need a safe, accessible storage location and a plan for replacement. If several burners or appliances will operate together, have the total gas demand checked for the equipment and site. Fuel cost is not universally cheaper in one format; operating cost depends on local rates, usage and appliance efficiency.

Outdoor receptacles and wiring must be suitable for the environment and protected as required by local code. The DCS Series 9 planning guide, version 1 from February 2024, specifies a GFI-protected outdoor 120 VAC, 15 A outlet and a qualified electrician for the listed appliance family. Treat that as model-family guidance, not a universal specification: refrigerators, lighting, ignition systems and future appliances may require different circuits or loads.
Water and drainage
A sink reduces trips indoors but adds supply piping, drainage, shutoffs and a winterization strategy where freezing is possible. Confirm where wastewater may discharge and whether a trap, vent or other plumbing detail is required locally. Do not place a sink on a plan until its route and service access have been priced.
Permits and qualified trades
Lowe’s advises checking with local officials or a homeowners association about permits and using licensed contractors for electrical, water, natural-gas or propane work. The exact permit set varies by jurisdiction and by whether the project changes a patio, roof, retaining structure or gas service. Put responsibility for permits and inspections in the contract rather than assuming it is covered.

Built-in grill or freestanding grill?
A built-in grill is designed to sit in a specified enclosure. It can create a seamless station and preserve counter space, but the cabinet must be designed around the appliance’s exact dimensions, ventilation and clearances. A freestanding grill includes its own frame and can usually be moved or replaced with less cabinet demolition.
| Decision factor | Built-in grill | Freestanding grill |
|---|---|---|
| Best use | Permanent island or coordinated outdoor kitchen | Flexible patio, rental or phased project |
| Design process | Select the grill first; build the enclosure to its manual | Set the grill in place without fabricating a custom cavity |
| Future replacement | Replacement must fit the existing opening or require cabinet changes | Replacement is generally less constrained by cabinetry |
| Fuel planning | Often connected to a fixed gas line, though some models support propane | May use a cylinder or a connection permitted by the model |
| Appearance and work surface | Integrated appearance with adjacent countertop | Self-contained frame; landing space must be provided separately |
The DCS Series 9 planning guide documents the BE1-36RC as a 36-inch grilling-surface model with LP or NG options. Its planning guide explicitly does not replace the product installation instructions. Select the actual grill before finalizing cabinet drawings, and verify current clearances, enclosure construction, ventilation and fuel instructions in the model-specific manual.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step planning sequence
- List the meals and tasks. Record how often you grill, whether preparation happens outdoors, how many people you serve and which indoor trips you want to eliminate.
- Choose the minimum useful equipment. Start with the grill and landing surface. Add storage, side burner, refrigeration, sink or specialty cooking only when a recurring task justifies it.
- Survey the site. Measure the patio and access routes; mark doors, windows, roof members, combustible surfaces, drains, existing utility points and the intended seating area.
- Draw the zones. Place preparation, cooking, serving and entertainment areas so social traffic does not cross the hot-work zone. Test appliance-door swings and drawer openings.
- Select the grill model. Record its cutout, overall dimensions, required clearances, ventilation, fuel options and electrical needs from the current installation manual.
- Choose a layout. Use a compact straight run where space is limited, an L shape to separate functions, or a U shape only where generous clearances remain.
- Coordinate utilities. Have gas demand, electrical loads, water supply, drainage and shutoffs designed before paving, cabinetry and landscaping are complete.
- Confirm approvals. Ask the local authority and any HOA about permits, inspections, fire separation and licensed-trade requirements.
- Obtain itemized bids. Require the scope list above, identify exclusions and request current pricing for delivery, labor, permits and site restoration.
- Plan protection and access. Choose a cover or roof strategy, keep service panels reachable and establish how the system will be shut down and winterized.
- Build and inspect in sequence. Complete the base and rough utilities, verify dimensions, install cabinets and counters, connect appliances through qualified trades, then test every burner, outlet, drain and shutoff.
Safety, ventilation and weather exposure
Outdoor appliances are exposed to rain, humidity, wind, temperature changes and grease. Use cabinets and finishes rated for the location, keep ventilation paths open and follow the appliance’s enclosure requirements. A cover can reduce exposure, but it does not correct an undersized clearance or an unsafe gas installation.
Keep combustible construction, furnishings and stored fuel outside the clearances specified by the manufacturer and local rules. The 10-foot caution cited in Lowe’s guidance is a general warning, not permission to ignore a product manual. Confirm smoke direction, locate fire-safety equipment as required locally, and avoid routing electrical components where water can collect.
Provide service access to regulators, shutoff valves, filters, ignition components and refrigeration equipment. A beautiful counter that prevents a technician from reaching a connection turns routine maintenance into demolition.

Four practical configurations
Small urban patio
Use a short modular straight run with a built-in or freestanding grill, one landing surface and limited storage. Keep a continuous walking path and preserve the seating area rather than filling the patio with a deep island. If preparation is mostly indoors, a sink and refrigerator are unlikely to repay their utility cost.

Family patio used every weekend
An expanded straight run or compact L shape can add enclosed storage, a side burner and weather-rated refrigeration. Position the preparation leg near the house-side access and keep serving space away from the grill opening. Price the electrical and gas capacity for simultaneous use before selecting appliances.
Large garden for entertaining
An L or U layout can separate cooking from seating and provide distinct preparation and serving surfaces. Confirm generous clearances on every approach, especially if guests will circulate behind the cook. Add a sink or refrigeration only after mapping plumbing and drainage routes.
Phased project with uncertain budget
Install the base, utility sleeves and a capable grill station first. Design the foundation and conduits so future cabinets or a refrigerator can be added without tearing out finished paving. Do not install empty appliance openings that collect water or compromise ventilation.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Comparing a cabinet MSRP with an installed quote. Correction: put appliance, counter, labor, utilities, patio, permits and delivery in separate columns.
- Designing cabinets before choosing the grill. Correction: use the current model manual and cutout drawing before fabrication.
- Leaving utilities until the end. Correction: freeze the appliance layout and rough in services before paving and landscaping.
- Overbuilding for occasional use. Correction: start with the tasks you perform and add only equipment that removes a recurring inconvenience.
- Ignoring circulation. Correction: mark social paths and appliance-door swings at full scale; remove cabinets that create a pinch point.
- Treating a general clearance as a code approval. Correction: follow the manufacturer’s spacing, local code and fire requirements, whichever are more demanding.
- Choosing fuel without planning storage or capacity. Correction: decide between permanent natural gas and propane after confirming line sizing, cylinder storage and local rules.
- Blocking service access. Correction: leave reachable shutoffs and removable panels before sealing the counter.
- Assuming a sink is a simple add-on. Correction: price water, drainage, venting, freeze protection and permitted discharge first.
- Forgetting weather protection. Correction: specify outdoor-rated components, drainage, covers and a realistic cleaning and winterization routine.
A final decision checklist
Choose the grill station if most of these statements are true:
- Your main objective is grilling with a safe landing and prep surface.
- Most washing, chopping and refrigeration will remain indoors.
- The patio is tight or must retain a generous social and walking area.
- You grill seasonally or only occasionally.
- You want a smaller, more movable or more easily phased project.
Choose the outdoor kitchen if most of these statements are true:
- You prepare and serve meals outdoors frequently.
- Storage, refrigeration, a sink or specialty cooking equipment will be used regularly.
- The site can support the footprint without sacrificing circulation.
- Gas, electrical, water and drainage routes can be installed before finishes.
- You accept the additional maintenance, permits and long-term commitment.
When the answers split, specify a modular run: build a well-planned grill station with sound utilities and leave a deliberate path for future storage or appliances. That approach preserves today’s usable space while avoiding a rushed decision about a full kitchen.
