The right choice depends on your exposure, the exact species or polymer, protective finish, frame and hardware, weave quality, and how much maintenance you will actually perform.
What really determines outdoor-furniture performance
Material labels are only a starting point. Two chairs sold as “metal” can behave very differently when one has a sound powder-coated aluminum frame and the other has thin steel with a damaged coating. “Wicker” describes a weaving method, not a single substance. “Wood” may mean a naturally durable species with a penetrating finish or a softer species left largely unprotected. Plastic can be ordinary resin or a heavy recycled-plastic lumber product.

Exposure changes the decision as much as the material. Direct ultraviolet light, repeated rain, salt air, freezing temperatures, standing water and a sheltered porch each stress furniture differently. The available guidance does not establish a controlled test ranking wood, metal, wicker and plastic in every climate, so treat broad claims about universal durability or service life skeptically.

At-a-glance comparison
| Material family | Weather performance and finish dependence | Routine care | Moving and storage | Look and feel | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weather-resistant wood | Species, finish and exposure determine resistance. It can function outdoors, but moisture and sunlight gradually change its surface. | Clean as directed; preservative or finish treatments depend on species, existing finish and climate. | Usually heavier than hollow metal or resin pieces; solid construction can be difficult to move. | Warm, natural grain; color can weather and turn gray. | Species identification, end-grain sealing, splinters, cracks, joints and compatible finish. |
| Aluminum | Aluminum resists rust, although its surface can pit. Finish quality affects fading and appearance. | Routine washing; inspect for pits, scratches and loose hardware. | Often easier to move than steel or solid wood; stacking depends on the design. | Clean, modern appearance; can feel light in windy locations. | Welds, joints, coating coverage, wall thickness and stability. |
| Steel or wrought iron | Iron-based metals rust when moisture reaches exposed metal. Protection depends on a continuous, maintained finish. | Keep clean and dry where possible; repair chips, scratches and exposed welds promptly. | Typically heavy and stable, but harder to store or relocate. | Substantial, traditional feel; elaborate forms are common. | Coating at joints and welds, hidden undersides, fasteners, drain points and any bubbling rust. |
| Natural wicker | Natural fibers such as rattan need weatherproofing and more shelter than synthetic alternatives. | Keep dry, clean gently and renew protective treatment according to the maker’s directions. | Often light, but should be stored or covered in severe weather. | Textured, handcrafted appearance. | Fiber condition, loose strands, frame rigidity and signs of water absorption. |
| Resin wicker | Synthetic resin is the more weather-oriented wicker option, but the weave and underlying frame still matter. | Wash periodically; check for cracked strands, fading and frame corrosion. | Usually manageable to move; stacking depends on frame design. | Can imitate natural weave in many colors and patterns. | Tight, even weave; UV-exposed surfaces; frame material, welds and hardware. |
| Resin plastic or recycled-plastic lumber | Resin furniture is generally durable and weather resistant for ordinary outdoor use. Recovered plastics such as HDPE are used for park benches and picnic tables, but that does not guarantee equal life for every consumer product. | Usually simple washing; fading, brittleness, fastener loosening and staining still require attention. | Many pieces stack or store compactly; lumber-style products can be very heavy. | Broad range from molded contemporary shapes to thick, board-like construction. | Plastic thickness, UV protection, drainage, hardware, flex under load and recycled-content claims. |
There are no current, comparable prices or universal service-life figures for these four broad categories in the available guidance. A price comparison is meaningful only when products have similar dimensions, construction, finish, cushions and warranty terms.
Wood: natural character with a maintenance commitment
Which outdoor woods are commonly chosen?
Landscape guidance identifies teak, redwood, cedar and cypress as weather-resistant choices. “Weather-resistant” does not mean impervious. The species, board thickness, joinery, end-grain treatment and finish all affect how the piece handles repeated wetting and drying.
What changes as wood weathers?
Unfinished or lightly finished wood commonly changes color as sunlight and moisture alter the surface. Teak and other species may develop a gray patina. That visual change is different from structural failure: preserving the original color requires a different care plan from simply keeping the furniture functional. Do not assume that oiling is mandatory for every species, or that every oil is compatible with an existing sealer.
How should wood be cared for?
- Find the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact species and finish before applying anything.
- Remove leaves, soil and spills so moisture is not held against the surface.
- Wash with the recommended cleaner and allow the piece to dry fully; avoid aggressive methods that erode the grain or finish.
- Inspect end grain, joints and fastener holes for checking, splinters or movement.
- Apply a preservative, oil or protective coating only when the instructions specify it and the surface is prepared for that product.
- Use a breathable cover or sheltered placement during prolonged wet or freezing periods when the maker permits it.
Wood suits buyers who value warmth and are willing to accept seasonal appearance changes and periodic care. It is a poor fit when you want to leave furniture neglected in constant exposure.

Metal: separate rust-resistant aluminum from iron-based frames
Does aluminum patio furniture rust?
Aluminum resists rust because it does not form the same red iron oxide as steel or wrought iron. Iowa State University Extension notes that aluminum surfaces can still pit, especially when dirt, salts or moisture remain in contact. Cleaning helps preserve the surface, but it does not make aluminum indestructible.
Inspect aluminum for thin or incomplete coating, deep scratches, pitting around fasteners and welds that flex when you sit down. Lightweight frames may be convenient to move, yet they can be less stable in strong wind unless the design includes broad feet or anchoring provisions. A cover can help limit finish fading during the off-season, but it cannot correct poor drainage or a weak frame.
How do steel and wrought iron differ in care?
Steel and wrought iron can rust wherever moisture reaches bare metal. Paint or powder coating is a barrier, not a permanent guarantee. Pay special attention to welds, screw heads, tube ends, undersides and places where two parts rub. Bubbling paint often signals corrosion beneath the finish.
- Rinse or wash away salt, soil and bird residue rather than allowing deposits to remain.
- Dry joints and horizontal surfaces where water pools.
- At the first chip or scratch, follow the manufacturer’s preparation and touch-up procedure; do not simply paint over loose rust.
- Replace badly corroded hardware with compatible outdoor-rated hardware.
- Cover wrought iron or place it on a covered porch or patio when practical, particularly during a wet off-season.
Iron-based furniture can be an excellent choice when you want weight and stability and will maintain the coating. It is not the low-maintenance equivalent of aluminum.

Wicker: identify the weave and the material underneath
Is wicker furniture acceptable in the rain?
Wicker is a woven form that may use natural fibers or synthetic resin. Natural rattan and similar fibers absorb moisture more readily and need weatherproofing every few years according to landscape guidance. Repeated saturation, trapped dampness and freezing can distort or split the weave, so natural wicker is best on a protected porch or moved indoors during severe weather.
Why resin wicker is more outdoor-oriented
Resin wicker uses synthetic strands designed for outdoor exposure and generally lasts longer outside than natural fiber. Consumer guidance recommends waterproof resin wicker and a tight weave. The word “resin” still does not specify the quality of the polymer, UV stabilizers or frame. A resin weave on a rust-prone steel frame can fail at the frame before the strands do.
What to inspect before buying
- Run your hand over the weave: strands should be tight, evenly spaced and free of sharp cut ends.
- Press lightly on the seat and arms to detect excessive flex or rattling.
- Look beneath the weave for coating gaps, rust at welds and hardware that cannot drain.
- Check that cushions fit without forcing the weave outward and that covers can be removed for drying.
- Ask whether replacement strands or cushions are available if a section is damaged.
Clean wicker gently with the method specified by the maker. Abrasive brushes and harsh solvents can roughen resin or remove protective treatments from natural fibers.
Plastic: practical resin and heavier recycled-plastic lumber
What ordinary resin furniture does well
Iowa State University Extension describes plastic resin furniture as durable and weather resistant for ordinary outdoor use. Many molded pieces are easy to wash, stack or store compactly. These advantages make resin useful for dining sets, occasional seating and households that need frequent rearrangement.

Plastic is not automatically maintenance-free. Ultraviolet exposure can fade or embrittle some formulations; thin sections can crack under impact; dark surfaces can become hot; and wind can move lightweight chairs. Check for drain holes, wall thickness, flex at the seat and a stable base. Follow the cleaning instructions instead of assuming every household solvent is safe.
What recovered plastic means
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency procurement guidance lists recovered wood, steel, aluminum, HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE and PP among materials used for park benches and picnic tables. This confirms that recovered plastics, including HDPE, are established options for outdoor public furniture. It is not a controlled lifespan comparison and does not prove that every consumer product contains the same recycled content or has the same structural performance.
Recycled-plastic lumber is often thick and heavy, which can improve stability but make moving and storage harder. Examine the board-to-frame connections, fastener pullout, surface warping and water-shedding details just as you would with wood.

Match the material to your exposure
| Site condition | Questions to ask | Practical implications |
|---|---|---|
| Full, year-round sun | Will the finish fade? Is the polymer UV-stabilized? Can cushions be stored? | Prioritize documented outdoor finishes, plan for shade or covers, and expect some color change over time. |
| Frequent rain or snow | Where does water drain? Can the piece dry between storms? | Avoid designs that trap water in cushions, tubes, weave or end grain; sheltered placement reduces demands on every material. |
| Salt air or de-icing residue | How are fasteners and welds protected? Can surfaces be rinsed? | Increase washing frequency and inspect coatings, pits and hidden hardware. |
| Freezing conditions | Can absorbed water expand in fibers, cracks or joints? | Store natural wicker and vulnerable cushions; keep damaged finishes from taking on water before a freeze. |
| Windy, exposed site | Is the frame heavy or can it be anchored? | Heavy iron or recycled-plastic lumber may stay put; lightweight aluminum or resin may need secure storage or anchoring. |
| Covered porch | How much direct rain and sun actually reach the furniture? | A sheltered location can make wood or natural wicker practical while reducing cleaning for all materials. |
A pre-purchase inspection checklist
- Comfort: Sit in every chair. Check seat height, back angle, arm height and clearance beneath the table.
- Joints and welds: Push gently at corners and arms. Movement, creaking or sharp weld spatter indicates a problem.
- Finish coverage: Inspect undersides, tube ends, screw heads and areas hidden by cushions.
- Hardware: Confirm that bolts and screws are corrosion-compatible and replaceable.
- Surface safety: Reject splinters, burrs, exposed staples, cracked resin and unfinished edges.
- Water management: Look for drainage in frames, slatted surfaces and cushion covers; avoid pockets that stay wet.
- Weave quality: For wicker, check tightness, consistency and secure strand ends.
- Cushion fit: Cushions should sit flat, tie securely and use fabric intended for outdoor exposure.
- Storage reality: Measure your storage area and verify whether chairs actually stack or fold as advertised.
- Instructions: Obtain cleaning, touch-up and winter-storage guidance for the exact model before purchase.
Care practices that protect any material
- Place furniture where water can drain and air can circulate; do not leave legs in standing water.
- Clean dirt, pollen, food and salt before they become abrasive or corrosive deposits.
- Use covers or sheltered placement during the off-season when appropriate. Covers reduce exposure but can trap condensation if fitted over wet furniture.
- Inspect at the start and end of the outdoor season, including hidden surfaces and hardware.
- Repair a small finish failure promptly, using only products compatible with the existing material and coating.
- Store cushions dry and ventilated; outdoor fabric does not make a wet cushion immune to mildew.
- Record the care products and dates used so future treatments do not conflict with one another.
How to choose when two materials both fit
Choose wood when appearance is the priority
Select a documented weather-resistant species, accept that its color may change, and budget time for species-specific cleaning and finish care. Wood is compelling when natural grain and a substantial feel matter more than zero maintenance.

Choose aluminum when low rust risk and easy handling matter
Aluminum is appropriate for many exposed settings when you value lighter weight and straightforward washing. Verify coating quality and stability, especially in windy locations.
Choose steel or wrought iron when weight and traditional form matter
These frames can feel secure and durable, but only while their protective finish remains intact. Plan inspections and touch-up work as part of ownership.
Choose resin wicker for a woven look in a more exposed setting
Confirm that both the strands and frame are outdoor-suitable. A tight weave, sound welds and draining cushions matter more than the word “wicker” on the label.
Choose plastic for simple cleaning, stacking or recycled content
Compare wall thickness, UV protection, stability and hardware rather than assuming all molded or recycled plastic performs identically. Heavy recycled-plastic lumber can be highly stable but is not easy to move.
Bottom line
Start with the site, then evaluate construction and maintenance before choosing a material. Weather-resistant wood, aluminum, protected iron-based metal, resin wicker and well-made plastic can all serve outdoors when their limitations match the exposure. The best purchase is the one whose finish, frame, hardware, weave or polymer you can inspect—and whose care routine you will realistically follow.
