For outdoor wood framing, choose corrosion-resistant connectors and fasteners that are compatible with the treated wood, with each other, and with the connector manufacturer’s approved fastener schedule. Hot-dip galvanized hardware may suit many exterior applications when the treatment and product instructions allow it; stainless steel is commonly recommended for saltwater and severe exposure, with Type 316 offering better pitting resistance than lower stainless grades.
What makes outdoor framing hardware corrode?
Outdoor moisture and preservative-treated wood can increase corrosion risk. The exposure matters: a dry, sheltered deck connection is not the same environment as framing beside saltwater, a swimming pool, or a surface treated with de-icing salts. The wood’s preservative chemistry and the hardware’s material and coating also affect compatibility.
Start by checking the treated-wood label or asking the treatment provider what hardware is suitable for that specific product. Then assess the expected exposure, including whether the framing will remain wet or encounter salt, pool chemicals, or other corrosive materials. Choose the material for the exposure

These are selection principles, not a substitute for checking the actual treatment formulation and hardware approval. Products described broadly as corrosion resistant are not automatically suitable for every outdoor environment.

Keep connectors and fasteners compatible
Match the fastener material and finish to the connector system. The general pairing guidance is stainless fasteners with stainless connectors, and galvanized fasteners with galvanized connectors. Simpson Strong-Tie warns that galvanized fasteners can corrode faster when used with stainless connectors; it also says its Type 316 connectors should not be paired with lower-grade 304 or 305 fasteners. For stainless connectors, the manufacturer states: “Even with the protection of stainless-steel connections, structures in corrosive environments can be compromised over time when these connectors are installed with fasteners or anchors that are not stainless steel.” Simpson Strong-Tie

Use the connector’s listed fasteners and schedule
A structural connector’s required fastener type and installation pattern are part of its intended use. Do not replace a listed connector fastener with a generic deck screw simply because the size appears similar. Simpson Strong-Tie lists Strong-Drive SD SS connector screws for use with stainless connectors, but the particular screw must still be approved for the specific connector and application. Choose the correct connector category for the framing detail—such as a joist hanger, post or column base, strap, or tie—and follow that product’s instructions for fasteners, placement, and installation. A matching metal finish alone does not establish that a connection is structurally adequate.

Check the connection before buying hardware
- Identify the wood treatment. Read the lumber label or obtain compatibility guidance from the treatment provider for the specific preservative-treated wood.
- Classify the exposure. Note whether the framing is sheltered or regularly wet, and whether it is near saltwater, a pool, de-icing salts, or other corrosive materials.
- Select a compatible material system. Compare the treatment and exposure guidance with the connector and fastener manufacturer’s approved materials and finishes.
- Find the exact connector instructions. Confirm that the fastener is listed for that connector and use its required schedule; do not infer structural suitability from a fastener’s general description.
- Confirm the project design. Connector size, capacity, and fastener count depend on the framing geometry, loads, lumber, product model, and applicable local code.
What the hardware guidance cannot determine
General corrosion guidance cannot specify the connector size, load capacity, or number of fasteners for a particular deck, fence, pergola, or other structure. Those values require the actual connection geometry, loads, lumber, connector model, and jurisdiction. Follow the connector documentation and applicable local requirements, and obtain project-specific design help when those details are uncertain.
