The documented ideas below range from themed craft or 3D-printed pieces to traditional wood boards, a foldable storage design and an art-led historical prototype. These are project examples and instructions, not results from a head-to-head test, so none is ranked as the easiest, cheapest or most durable.
Choose a build path that fits your tools and design goals
Before choosing a board method, decide whether you want to make the pieces, the board, or both. Consider what tools you can access, how clearly your pieces will read across the board, and how much modeling or hand-finishing the design needs. MIT’s K-12 Maker Lab presents several possible approaches without ranking their results.
1. Themed pieces made from craft materials, wood or foam
MIT’s project invites makers to create pieces around a shared theme, using general craft materials, laser-cut wood, 3D-printed pieces, or rigid foam cut with a hot-wire cutter. The listed equipment includes craft tools, a 3D printer and modeling software, or a laser cutter and 2D modeling software, depending on the route. See the MIT K-12 Maker Lab chess-set project.
This is the most open-ended design route in the set: you can adapt piece shapes and materials to the theme, but the project source does not establish which method produces the clearest pieces or requires the least finishing. Plan for the pieces to remain distinguishable during play, and choose a process that matches your available tools and skills.

2. A traditional board made from wood strips
Dremel’s US project plan describes a board assembled from eight 2-inch wood strips. The maker paints four strips black and four white, edge-glues them into a panel, cuts that panel back into eight 2-inch strips, then glues the squares together in alternating colors and frames the board. Its materials and supplies include wood, glue, clamps, paint and sandpaper; the plan names the DSM20-03 Saw Max Tool Kit and SM500 Wood & Plastic Carbide Wheel. Those are the tools in Dremel’s instructions, not established requirements for every board build. See the Dremel chess-board project plan.
This approach depends on accurate cutting and gluing to keep the squares aligned. It makes a board, so plan separately for pieces if you want a complete set.

Make a chessboard from reclaimed wood
For a board built from salvaged material, artist John Ward-Knox’s Objectspace guide describes cutting 64 blocks, sanding them, coloring alternate squares and gluing them to a framed base. The guide, dated 9 April 2020, calls for salvaged or other wood, a handsaw, hammer, sandpaper, PVA glue, and nails or screws. A drill and clamps are described as helpful; torch, paint, nail polish, contrasting woods or textures can distinguish the squares. Beeswax or household or furniture oils are offered as possible finishes. See Ward-Knox’s Objectspace guide.
Unlike the strip method, this plan begins with individual blocks, so it calls for manual cutting of all 64 squares. Ward-Knox treats some irregularity as part of the board’s character. The result depends on the wood you can salvage and the finish you want; the guide does not compare the method’s cost or durability with other builds.

Build a foldable board that stores its pieces
Princeton EPICS students documented a portable design made from maple and mahogany. The board is split in two and hinged so it folds into a storage box; a metal latch secures it. The students designed chess pieces in Fusion 360 and 3D-printed them, then coated the wood with polyurethane and attached sticky felt to the piece bases. Read the Princeton EPICS project account.
This design combines piece-making with added woodworking operations for the hinges, box and latch. It suits makers who want integrated storage and have access to a 3D printer and shop tools. Princeton describes the work as a year-long student project involving many hours, tools and woodshop skills; that account includes the students’ learning and construction process, so it is not a typical build-time estimate.
Let the pieces and board become the artwork
A chess set can prioritize visual concept over conventional piece forms, provided the design still communicates how to play. The Philadelphia Museum of Art records sculptor Julien Levy’s 1944 plaster prototypes: discarded soft-boiled egg shells served as molds for rounded pieces, and seashells were inserted into the plaster board. The museum says the later oak pieces based on those prototypes were likely made by a local carpenter. See the Philadelphia Museum of Art collection record.

This is historical inspiration rather than a build guide. Its unusual materials and forms show one way to make the set itself the design subject, but the record does not provide instructions for reproducing the prototypes.

Historical material is not a modern build recommendation
The British Museum records a chess set with carved and turned ivory pieces in a papier-mâché box, registered in 1849 and probably produced around 1850. This is historical context only, not a recommendation to use ivory in a contemporary DIY set. See the British Museum record.
