ORIX says construction has begun on two grid-connected battery energy storage plants in Japan, rated at a combined 145 MW of output and 589 MWh of capacity. The sites are Yufu in Oita Prefecture, scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2028, and Yonezawa in Yamagata Prefecture, scheduled for 2030. Those dates are company plans, not confirmed completion dates.
What ORIX is building
The 145 MW / 589 MWh headline figure combines two separate projects; it does not describe one plant. ORIX announced the construction start on September 30, 2026. ORIX’s announcement gives the individual ratings and schedules.

The ratios are arithmetic calculations from the announced ratings: capacity divided by output. They indicate the theoretical duration at rated output, not guaranteed dispatch time or usable energy. Independent trade coverage also reports the combined project scale. Energy Storage
How the projects are organized
ORIX says it holds a 23.7% interest in the projects. Three external investors collectively hold the remaining 76.3%. The announcement identifies a consolidated subsidiary of Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation as one participant, but does not name all three external investors.

ORIX will provide asset management, including decision-making support and business management related to development and operation. ORIX Renewable Energy Management Corporation is assigned safety management during construction and operations and maintenance once the plants are operating.
What the batteries are intended to do
ORIX says the plants will charge when electricity is in surplus and discharge when supply is short. The company presents this shifting of electricity as a way to help balance supply and demand and make more effective use of renewable energy. That is the stated operating rationale; the announcement does not report measured emissions reductions or project-level grid-balancing results.

What the announcement does not specify
ORIX’s announcement does not identify the battery supplier or chemistry, the engineering, procurement and construction contractor, project costs, or a detailed revenue model. Those details should not be inferred from the plants’ ratings or scheduled dates.

ORIX described its Kinokawa Energy Storage Plant in Wakayama as the first plant in its energy storage business. In a November 29, 2024 announcement, it said the project had 64 lithium-ion battery containers, 48 MW of rated output and 113 MWh of rated capacity, with commercial operation scheduled to begin December 1, 2024.
