An optical-illusion end-grain cutting board is made by assembling contrasting hardwoods into a geometric pattern, then cutting and reassembling the work so the end grain reveals the illusion. The exact dimensions and sequence depend on the design: the available examples include downloadable plans, a magazine plan, a plug-based approach and a video lesson. Choose one method before buying lumber; their measurements and assembly steps are not interchangeable.

How the illusion board is built

Most of the documented approaches rely on contrast and precise sequencing. Hard maple and black walnut are one proven color pairing: their light and dark tones make the geometric pattern legible. The maker mills the stock to consistent dimensions, assembles patterned panels, cuts those panels into pieces, and reassembles them in a specific orientation to expose end grain and create the visual effect.

The details vary by plan. A Baton Rouge Woodworking Club build report describes strips assembled into opposing panels, then recut, rotated, laid out in order and glued again. WOOD magazine describes gluing identical blanks, slicing them into slabs, joining the slabs into strips, and gluing the strips together. These are distinct sequences, not interchangeable instructions.

Source and format What it describes Specifications and access
Baton Rouge Woodworking Club build report A maple-and-walnut build using opposing panels, repeated cutting, rotation and ordered reassembly. The June 8, 2019 report says its downloadable plan is available from mtmwood.com after registration and includes a SketchUp model. The plan uses metric dimensions; the report notes SketchUp can convert measurements.
WOOD magazine plan Glue identical blanks, slice them into slabs, join slabs into strips, then glue the strips into the board. The page was updated January 5, 2024 and directs readers to WOOD Store for the plan. The cited description does not state finished dimensions.
Newton Makes digital plan A plan for a 3D end-grain optical-illusion board. The listing accessed October 8, 2026 describes an approximate finished size of 1-1/4 inches thick by 12 inches wide by 18-1/4 inches long, plus 13 pages, more than 30 pictures and illustrations, 3D diagrams, and imperial and metric measurements. Dimensions and download terms are listing-specific and may change.
Canadian Woodworking plug-based design Alternating walnut and maple, opposing panels, crosscut slices, drilled plugs, glue-up, sanding and mineral-oil finishing. Lisa Chemerika’s article was published November 21, 2014 and revised November 14, 2023. She says her described board is better suited to art than food preparation; that caution applies to this specific plug-based design.
Class Central video listing A maple-and-walnut project by Ryan Hawkins covering milling, glue-ups, flattening, sanding, oil-and-wax finishing and feet. The listing, accessed October 8, 2026, describes a free, self-paced 25-minute intermediate video. It is an instructional alternative, not proof that its steps match any downloadable plan.

Choose a plan before buying materials

Use the design and assembly sequence to determine your stock dimensions and quantity. The examples vary in finished size, format, units and access requirements, so do not combine one plan’s measurements with another plan’s cut sequence.

  • Pattern and method: Confirm whether the design uses repeated panel cuts, slab-and-strip assembly or drilled plugs.
  • Instruction detail: Check whether you need a cut list, diagrams, a 3D model or video demonstrations. The club report’s plan includes a SketchUp model; the Newton Makes listing describes 3D diagrams; the Class Central listing is for a video lesson.
  • Units and finished dimensions: Check the plan’s measurement system and target size before calculating stock. Only use the Newton Makes dimensions for that seller’s listed design.
  • Access terms: Confirm the current download or purchase requirements directly with the plan provider. The club report describes registration; store listings and terms can change.
  • Intended use: Read any use caveat attached to the specific design, especially for the plug-based board described by Canadian Woodworking.

Materials, tools and waste planning

Contrasting hardwoods are central to the effect. The Baton Rouge build used hard maple and black walnut; it also emphasizes consistent thickness, which helps patterned parts align during glue-up. The sources do not establish one universal cut list or lumber quantity, so derive both from your selected plan and finished dimensions.

Plan for material lost to saw kerf, planing and cleanup. In the club’s particular build, 42 strips were cut from 30-inch stock, and the author estimated that saw kerf accounted for about five inches of width lost. Those figures describe that build only. Calculate your own allowance from the plan, saw blade and setup rather than treating them as standard requirements.

The documented workflows use equipment such as a table saw, jointing and planing tools, clamps and sanding tools. The plug-based design also describes drilling jigs and a hand drill. Match the tools to the plan’s operations and your ability to make repeatable, accurate cuts.

Construction workflow and precision checks

  1. Mill the stock consistently. Prepare the contrasting woods to the dimensions and thickness required by your chosen plan. Consistent pieces help prevent misalignment in later glue-ups.
  2. Assemble the first pattern. Follow the plan’s specified panel, blank or plug arrangement. Keep track of orientation and order as pieces are glued.
  3. Make the planned cuts. Cut panels or blanks into slabs, strips or slices only where the chosen design calls for it. Account for kerf and avoid substituting another plan’s sequence.
  4. Lay out the final pattern before gluing. Orient every piece as instructed. The end-grain direction and ordering of the pieces are what produce the finished visual effect.
  5. Complete the final glue-up and flatten the board. After the glue has cured, use a flattening and sanding workflow suited to your tools. The club report describes a drum sander and orbital sander; the video listing describes router-sled flattening. These are examples, not mandatory methods.
  6. Apply the finish specified for the design. Mineral oil appears in the club build and Chemerika’s description; the video listing describes an oil-and-wax finish. Follow the plan’s directions and verify that the chosen finish is appropriate for the board’s intended use.

Food-use caveat for the plug-based design

Canadian Woodworking’s warning is specific: Chemerika says her plug-based board is better suited to art than food preparation. Do not extend that judgment automatically to the panel-based designs. The sources do not establish a general food-safety assessment for every optical-illusion board, so determine intended use from the instructions for the exact design you choose.
