Old Farmer’s Almanac Last Frost Dates: Average Dates vs. the 2026 Outlook

The Almanac’s frost-date calculator gives a historical average, while its 2026 map offers a broad seasonal outlook. Neither guarantees frost-free conditions in your yard.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac offers two different kinds of spring frost guidance: a location-based average date from its frost-date calculator and a separate outlook for spring 2026. The average helps with crop planning; the map estimates whether frost timing may be earlier or later than usual. Neither guarantees that frost is over in your garden, so use a current local forecast before planting vulnerable crops.

What does the Almanac mean by “last frost date”?

The Almanac’s calculator gives an average spring date for a location, not a prediction that frost will stop on that date in a particular year. It says the U.S. dates use 1991–2020 NOAA climate data and a 30% probability threshold: there is a 30% chance frost could occur after the stated spring date. The Almanac describes the dates as typical conditions, not a forecast of the future. See the Almanac frost-date calculator.

The calculator covers U.S. and Canadian locations. Its Canada note refers to 1981–2010 Environment Canada Climate Normals. Separately, the Almanac’s 2025 Quarterly table gives a 30% chance for the United States and 33% for Canada that frost will occur after the spring date and before the fall date. These are statements from different Almanac sources; the pages do not explain the difference in Canadian period or probability, so they should not be combined into a single Canadian estimate. Read the 2025 Almanac Quarterly table.

How the 2026 map differs from the calculator

The 2026 Last Frost Date Map is a seasonal outlook for spring 2026, built from the Almanac’s long-range forecast and historical averages. It categorizes expected timing relative to average rather than supplying a precise date for each yard.

Local short-range forecast and alerts Near-term weather conditions for your area. Check as planting approaches and protect sensitive plants if frost or freezing conditions are forecast.

On the 2026 map, green means about one to two weeks earlier than average, yellow means roughly within one week of normal, and blue means about one to two weeks later. The map describes broad shifts, not a yard-by-yard guarantee; the Almanac characterizes most changes as modest.

How to use a last-frost date when planning a garden

  1. Look up the closest relevant location. Use the Almanac’s location lookup for an average, then treat it as a regional starting point rather than an exact reading for your property.
  2. Use the planting calendar for the specific crop. The Almanac Planting Calendar and Guide separates dates for starting seeds indoors, transplanting outdoors, direct sowing, and last planting. Those windows vary by crop; one frost date does not mean every plant should go into the ground at once.
  3. Account for your garden’s microclimate. A nearby station or ZIP-level result may not match your yard. Cold air can settle in low spots, while a sheltered, sunny area near a wall may be warmer. Soil condition also matters.
  4. Check the forecast close to planting. Average dates and the 2026 seasonal outlook are planning aids. Use current local weather information to decide whether to plant now or keep frost protection ready.

What the frost date cannot tell you

A last-frost date is not the date after which frost cannot happen. It summarizes typical timing using historical data; unusual weather and local conditions can still bring frost later. The Almanac itself advises treating the dates as flexible guidelines because microclimates vary. Its frost guidance also distinguishes frost from freeze conditions, so a forecast’s actual temperatures and local alerts matter. Read the Almanac’s frost and freeze guidance.
