Octopus Energy’s Cosy Cooler is expected to cost £500–£600, but that price is for an add-on rather than a complete air-conditioning system. It is a prototype indoor cooling unit that requires an existing compatible Octopus Cosy heat pump. Households starting from scratch would also need to buy and install the heat pump, so the headline figure mainly benefits current Cosy owners.
What the Cosy Cooler is
The Cosy Cooler is an indoor unit designed to work with Octopus Energy’s Cosy heat-pump system. It is not a standalone air conditioner: without a compatible Cosy heat pump and suitable heating pipework, it cannot operate.

How it provides cooling
A fan draws warm room air across a heat exchanger. The unit returns cooler air to the room while transferring the extracted heat into the existing radiator pipework. That heat travels to the outdoor Cosy heat pump, which releases it outside.

Octopus’s corrected explanation says the water in the pipework remains above the conditions that would create condensation. This differs from a portable compressor air conditioner, which normally needs a hose to discharge hot air through a window or wall.

Two or three units may be able to run in different rooms, but that depends on the Cosy heat-pump model. Higher-tier models are required for multiple units. The £500–£600 price therefore should not be read as a whole-home cooling price.

What it costs in practice
Existing Cosy heat-pump owners
For a homeowner who already has a compatible Cosy heat pump and usable pipework, the expected £500–£600 add-on price is the main equipment cost reported by Octopus. Installation details and any site-specific work could still affect the final invoice.
Households buying a new system
Anyone without a Cosy heat pump must add the cost of that system. Ideal Home reported a typical Octopus heat-pump price of £4,064 after the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in 2026. Radiator or pipework upgrades may also be needed, depending on the property.

That makes the cooler a very different proposition for a new installation: the relevant budget is the heat pump, installation and any upgrades, plus one or more indoor cooler units. Ideal Home judged fitted air conditioning potentially more cost-effective when a household is starting from zero.

A portable unit remains the simplest immediately available alternative for a home without a Cosy heat pump. Fitted air conditioning may make more financial sense for a new cooling installation, particularly where several rooms need dependable simultaneous cooling.

What has not been published yet
Octopus has not released a complete technical datasheet for the Cosy Cooler. The following figures are therefore not available for a reliable buying comparison:
- Rated cooling capacity
- Electrical consumption and running cost
- Airflow rate
- Noise level
- Seasonal efficiency
- Detailed whole-home performance limits
Until those measurements are published, it is not possible to calculate how quickly the unit will cool a particular room, how it will compare with a portable or fitted system at the same load, or how much electricity it will use during a hot spell.
Who should consider waiting for it?
- Existing Cosy owners: the add-on is the group for whom £500–£600 has the clearest meaning, provided the heat-pump model supports the required number of units.
- People planning a new heat-pump installation: compare the complete installed cost with a dedicated fitted air-conditioning design rather than comparing £500 with an entire cooling system.
- Anyone needing cooling now: the Cosy Cooler is still in trials, so a portable or currently available fitted system is the practical route.
Bottom line on the £500 claim
The Cosy Cooler could add room cooling without an exhaust hose or major building work, using the pipework already connected to a compatible Cosy heat pump. The £500–£600 figure is an expected add-on price, not the cost of heat-pump heating and whole-home air conditioning. With trials continuing in October 2026 and key performance specifications still unpublished, the sensible decision is to wait for the 2027 launch details unless you already own a qualifying Cosy system and can verify compatibility.
