There is not enough verified evidence to recommend 15 residential washers that are both currently available and explicitly classified as non-HE. If “non-HE” means a traditional center-post agitator or the ability to add more water, those features are useful filters—but neither proves that a washer is non-HE. Check the detergent instructions and efficiency status for the exact model before buying.
What “non-HE” means when shopping
“Non-HE” is often used to describe the traditional top-load experience: a center-post agitator and, for some shoppers, a fuller tub. But wash mechanism, fill options, and high-efficiency classification are separate attributes. Whirlpool’s comparison chart, for example, lists both agitator and impeller top-load washers, including an agitator model with a Deep Water Wash option. For a meaningful comparison, confirm the exact model’s wash mechanism, permitted water-fill controls, detergent guidance, ENERGY STAR status, capacity, and dimensions. Independent results for cleaning, fabric gentleness, water and energy use, noise, and vibration can help assess performance, but manufacturer feature descriptions are not independent test scores.
What agitator and deep-fill features tell you—and what they do not
Agitator action
The U.S. International Trade Commission describes an agitator as a center post with vanes that moves back and forth. That action can twist and tangle clothes. The agency’s 2020 report also discusses shallow-fill technology and HE agitators as industry responses to efficiency standards; an agitator therefore does not automatically mean a washer is non-HE. Deep-fill options
A deep-fill control can add water on models that offer it, but that does not establish a non-HE classification or mean every load should use the maximum fill. Use the control as the model’s manual directs, for the loads and conditions it specifies.
Examples of models with agitator or deep-water features
These examples illustrate why feature descriptions should not be mistaken for proof of non-HE status. They are not a ranked list of verified non-HE machines.

Check detergent instructions before using regular detergent
Do not assume an agitator or deep-fill button means a washer accepts regular, non-HE detergent. Whirlpool owner’s manual W10824713 recommends HE detergent for the low-water washer it covers and warns that regular detergent can produce excessive suds. It also explains that Deep Fill adds more water. These instructions apply to the manual’s covered model, not automatically to every washer. Whirlpool owner’s manual W10824713, Rev. B
That manual says, “This low-water wash method uses less water and energy compared to a traditional agitator-style washer.” This is a statement about the washer covered by that manual, not a general comparison covering all machines.

How to evaluate a washer before you buy
- Identify what you want from “non-HE.” Decide whether your priority is a center-post agitator, a deeper fill option, or a model explicitly documented as non-HE. Do not treat those terms as interchangeable.
- Verify the exact model number. Check the manufacturer’s current product information for wash mechanism, capacity, fill controls, and ENERGY STAR status. Features can differ between models with similar names.
- Read the owner’s manual. Confirm the required detergent type and how any deep-fill setting works. Follow its instructions rather than inferring detergent compatibility from the machine’s appearance.
- Check installation fit. Compare the washer’s dimensions with the available space and account for the installation clearances and hookups specified by the manufacturer.
- Look for independent test results. Compare cleaning, fabric gentleness, water and energy use, noise, and vibration when model-specific results are accessible. Why a verified 15-model ranking is not available
The available model information supports a small number of examples with agitator or deep-water features, not 15 distinct residential washers verified as both currently available and non-HE. A ranked list would require confirming that classification for every exact model, rather than inferring it from an agitator, a deep-fill option, or a manufacturer’s use of “traditional.”
