For a Christmas display that is not built around evergreen foliage, choose flowering bulbs or houseplants for blooms, or caladium for striking leaves. The best fit depends on the room: a sunny, warm spot suits amaryllis, while cyclamen and some orchids prefer cooler conditions. Check each plant’s care and safety needs before placing it where children or pets can reach it.
Choose a plant by the effect you want
These plants bring color and shape without relying on evergreen branches. Their displays differ in scale and care, so match the plant to the space and the way you want it to look.
| Plant | What it adds | Room and care fit | Display and safety notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amaryllis | Large trumpet-shaped flowers on tall stalks; blooms may be red, white, pink, orange, or bicolored. | Warm, sunny placement; keep the growing medium on the dry side and do not let it become waterlogged. | Some bulbs are sold wax-coated and need no pot. Bulbs, leaves, and flowers contain toxins; keep away from children and pets. |
| Paperwhite narcissus | Fragrant, pale flowers grown from bulbs. | A bulb option described by UF/IFAS as easy to force to flower. | Mississippi State includes paperwhites in its holiday houseplant guidance; a specific display duration is not stated. |
| Cyclamen | Twisted red, pink, or white flowers above dark green to silvery leaves. | A cool-season accent; choose a suitable cool position in the home. | RHS lists cyclamen among its Christmas houseplants; a specific display duration is not stated. |
| Kalanchoe | Compact flowers in red, pink, yellow, orange, and pastel shades. | Durable and tolerant of warm, dry conditions; a practical choice for someone likely to miss a watering. | Drought stress can shorten flower life; a specific display duration is not stated. |
| Gloxinia | A low, spreading plant with large fleshy leaves and trumpet-shaped flowers. | Use indirect light; keep the soil moist, not waterlogged, water with warm water from the saucer, and protect from drafts. | A specific display duration is not stated. |
| Christmas cactus | Seasonal blooms on a compact, arching plant. | Give it a bright winter window. Water as the soil begins to dry, but do not let it dry out completely or become soggy. | UVM says blooms may last 4–6 weeks and the plant can live for many years. It is not poisonous to humans or pets, though eating fibrous segments may cause digestive issues. |
| Orchids | Long-lasting-looking, sculptural flowers; Phalaenopsis and Cymbidium are among RHS’s Christmas choices. | RHS describes Phalaenopsis as suited to warm rooms and Cymbidium as suitable for cooler positions out of full sun. | A specific bloom duration is not stated in the cited guidance. |
| Caladium | Bold foliage patterned in white, silver, green, pink, or red rather than flowers. | Indoors, provide medium to bright light, good soil moisture, and humidity; keep it away from heating vents and cold drafts. | UGA says it can remain indoors through Valentine’s Day before dormancy. Toxic if eaten; keep out of reach of children and pets. |
Other possibilities mentioned by NC State include ornamental peppers and forced hydrangeas; UF/IFAS also lists anthurium and bromeliads as colorful gift plants. Their detailed room requirements and display durations are not established in the cited guidance.
Match the plant to the room
RHS advises selecting plants that suit the conditions available in the home. A bright window, a cool room, and a warm spot near a heating vent are not interchangeable environments. Avoid drafts, abrupt temperature changes—often an issue beside windows—and hot locations such as above radiators.

Care that protects the display
Planting and growing amaryllis
NC State recommends leaving about one-third of the bulb above the soil, placing it somewhere warm and sunny, and keeping the medium on the dry side rather than waterlogged. Temperatures should be above 60°F. High light helps keep the leaves and flower stalk from stretching and toppling. Some amaryllis bulbs are wax-coated and do not need a pot, according to UF/IFAS.
Watering Christmas cactus
Water when the soil begins to dry. Avoid both extremes: the plant should not dry out completely, and it should not sit in soggy soil. UVM recommends a bright winter window and notes that flowers may last four to six weeks.
Keeping caladium attractive indoors
Provide medium to bright light, maintain good soil moisture and humidity, and keep the plant clear of heat registers and cold drafts. Caladium eventually enters dormancy, so it is a seasonal foliage display, not a promise of colorful leaves year-round. UGA says an indoor plant can remain in the home through Valentine’s Day before dormancy.

Watering other holiday plants
Follow the care needs of the particular plant rather than applying one watering routine to every pot. RHS describes briefly standing pots in water and allowing them to drain as a general method, but plant-specific needs differ: for example, NC State advises keeping amaryllis on the dry side, while gloxinia should be kept moist but not waterlogged.

Do not assume every seasonal plant is either poisonous or harmless. UVM says amaryllis bulbs, leaves, and flowers contain toxins that can cause abdominal pain, vomiting, and other distress. UGA identifies caladium as toxic if eaten. Keep both out of reach of children and pets.
UVM says Christmas cactus is not poisonous to humans or pets, although eating its fibrous segments may cause digestive issues. Poinsettia is also not considered poisonous by UVM, but its sap may irritate skin and ingestion can cause mild stomach upset. That distinction matters when choosing a plant for a household with curious children or animals.

Plan for what happens after Christmas
Some choices can stay attractive after the holiday itself. UVM says Christmas cactus blooms may last four to six weeks, and the plant can last for many years. Caladium can extend a foliage display indoors through Valentine’s Day, according to UGA, before it goes dormant. For other plants in this guide, the cited sources do not establish a precise display duration, so treat the look as dependent on the plant’s condition and home environment.
For outdoor planting or moving a plant outside after the season, local climate matters. The care advice here is general indoor guidance, largely from U.S. extension services and the UK RHS; it does not establish that any of these plants will tolerate winter outdoors in a particular region.
