A no-weld rail-bike conversion is possible as a prototype concept, but the available example is not a tested set of plans. It combines a guide at the bicycle’s front wheel or fork with an outrigger that reaches the opposite rail. The source does not establish safe dimensions, materials, load limits, or compatibility, so it cannot support a reliable do-it-yourself build. Before considering any equipment, confirm that access to the specific railway is authorized: trains may arrive unexpectedly, and recreational riding on railroad property may be trespassing.
First: railroad access and train hazards
A rail-bike conversion does not give its rider permission to use a railway. In the United States, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) warns that trains can arrive at any time and that recreational bicycling on railroad property can be trespassing. FRA also says a train traveling at 55 mph can take more than a mile to stop; the page does not state a publication year. FRA’s track safety information describes federal Track Safety Standards as minimum requirements for track structure and geometry, along with railroads’ maintenance and inspection responsibilities. Those standards do not grant private individuals permission to ride a line.
How the no-weld concept is arranged
The reported prototype was more than a bicycle fitted with flanged wheels. It used a front guide to keep the bicycle on one rail and an outrigger to support it at the opposite rail. The prototype description mentions conduit, parts from razor scooters, a bicycle fork, steel pieces, nuts, bolts, washers, and retaining pins. These are materials reported by one builder—not a validated bill of materials or a recommendation that generic versions of those items are suitable.

The prototype account identifies spacing as difficult: the guide and support must align with the rails while limiting friction and unwanted play. It supplies no verified dimensions or rail-wheel profile, so it cannot tell a reader how to set that spacing for a particular track.
Why a reported prototype is not a build plan
A separate builder account says an early design without diagonal bracing flexed under pedaling or shifts in rider weight, and leaned when rail width varied. The builder reported that a later design clamped the bicycle fork and tracked better. Those observations can flag issues to investigate, but they are personal reports—not evidence of safety, durability, or compatibility across bicycles and railways.

The reviewed accounts establish no validated dimensions, material grades, load ratings, fatigue data, or inspection intervals for a no-weld conversion. Nor do they resolve how a specific bicycle’s geometry and fork strength, attachment method, rider loads, track gauge and condition, braking, or removal from the track affect safety. A mention of conduit or fasteners does not show that any particular grade, size, or assembly can withstand these demands.

- Structure: Whether the fork attachment, frame, bracing, materials, and fasteners can resist the forces imposed by pedaling, rider movement, and track conditions.
- Retention and control: How the guide and support stay engaged, and how the rider can brake, stop, and remove the vehicle from the track.
- Verification: What qualified engineering review, load testing, fatigue assessment, and inspection criteria would be needed for the specific design.
Without design-specific engineering and testing, the anecdotal prototype is not a sound basis for prescriptive construction instructions.

FRA research on wheeled devices concerns crossing tracks at road crossings, not traveling along rails. It summarizes findings that crash rates were highest when the crossing angle was under 30 degrees, lower at 30 degrees or greater, and absent in the cited study at 60 degrees or greater.
