Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has deferred Phase 5 of its cement-concrete road programme while it prioritises drinking-water supply and conservation. The package was estimated at about ₹900 crore and, after additions proposed by elected representatives, covers 265 roads with a reported total length of about 89.22 km. The move is a postponement linked to water conditions, not a reported cancellation.
Why NMC stopped the Phase 5 road work
Officials have put the road package on hold because Nagpur is facing tighter water conditions and deficient rainfall. NDTV reported on 15 October 2026 that NMC was giving priority to drinking-water needs and conservation before proceeding with the cement-road programme.

Prime Time 24 attributed the decision to the district’s rainfall situation, reporting that Nagpur recorded its lowest rainfall in 18 years. The same report said dams supplying the area were about 58% full. Those figures are reported observations from that outlet; a current water-department bulletin would be needed to independently establish them.
Cement-concrete road construction can require water for concrete production, curing and associated site work. NMC has not published a quantified construction-water requirement for this package, so the immediate decision should be understood as a precautionary allocation of water resources rather than a response to a stated project consumption figure.

How many roads are included in Nagpur cement-road Phase 5?
The scope changed substantially during planning. The initial programme listed 135 roads. Submissions from corporators and MLAs added 130 more, taking the working list to 265 roads.

The ₹900 crore and 89.22 km figures are therefore best treated as the package’s working figures, not a final approved cost and measurement for the enlarged list. One search result displayed 900.22 km, but the corroborated figure in the cited reports is approximately 89.22 km.

Is the project cancelled or postponed?
Available reporting describes a hold or deferral, not cancellation. NMC has not been reported as withdrawing the project, scrapping the road list or terminating the proposed works. A pause allows the corporation to reassess water availability and complete planning before issuing or advancing construction decisions.
The timing also reflects uncertainty that predates the water-related decision. A July 2026 report said the detailed plan for the ₹900 crore Phase 5 project was not ready. The subsequent expansion from 135 to 265 roads created another unresolved issue: NMC had not yet published a revised financial requirement or confirmed road length for the added scope.

NMC has not established a revised cost after adding 130 roads. The ₹900 crore figure remains the original working estimate associated with the earlier scope.
Detailed plan and tender timetable
Reporting does not establish that a final detailed project plan, tender schedule or work-order programme is ready. Those documents would clarify which roads qualify, their sequencing, specifications and funding.

Restart date
No formal NMC timetable for resuming Phase 5 has been reported. Restart will depend on water-supply risk, rainfall and reservoir conditions, project readiness and the corporation’s updated cost and road schedule.
