Much of it is held in organic matter and must be converted by soil microbes before roots can take it up. Yellowing older leaves and weak growth can indicate a shortage, but they are clues—not a diagnosis. Natural sources include soil organic matter, legumes, manure, compost, and crop residues; each releases nitrogen at a different pace.
What nitrogen does in soil
Nitrogen is an essential plant macronutrient. Plants generally cannot use the large pool of nitrogen gas in the atmosphere directly. Soil processes and biological fixation transform nitrogen into forms plants can use, including ammonium and nitrate.
Most soil nitrogen is organic, held in soil organic matter, plant residues, and microorganisms. Microbes gradually convert this organic nitrogen into inorganic forms through mineralization. As a result, total soil nitrogen is not the same as the amount available to a crop at a particular time. The amount released depends on the quantity and quality of organic matter, as well as soil temperature and moisture.
Oregon State University Extension’s 2019 guidance says baseline soil nitrogen mineralization typically supplies about half of crop nitrogen uptake in the context of that publication. This is not a universal estimate for every soil or crop. Oregon State University Extension: Baseline Soil Nitrogen Mineralization.

Signs that a plant may be nitrogen-deficient
- Yellowing or pale older leaves: Nitrogen can move within a plant, so a shortage may show first in older leaves as nitrogen is redirected toward newer growth.
- Weak or stunted growth: A plant without enough available nitrogen may grow slowly or appear less vigorous.
These symptoms can have other causes, including other nutrient problems or plant stress. Do not treat a single yellow leaf as proof of nitrogen deficiency. A suitable soil test or plant tissue analysis can help confirm the issue; interpret results for the crop and region. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources discusses crop nutrient requirements and diagnosis at Crop Nutrient Requirements. The University of Florida IFAS Extension also outlines nutrient roles and symptoms in Plant Essential Nutrients and Their Role.
Natural sources of nitrogen
| Source | How it supplies nitrogen | Timing and considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Soil organic matter | Microbes mineralize organic nitrogen into plant-available forms. | Release varies with organic matter quantity and quality, temperature, and moisture. |
| Legume cover crops and green manures | Legumes partner with bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen. Nitrogen in their biomass can become available after termination and decomposition. | Amount and timing depend on species, stand quality, growth stage, and termination timing. |
| Nonlegume cover crops and crop residues | They capture residual nitrogen and recycle it as their biomass decomposes; they do not fix atmospheric nitrogen. | Mature, carbon-rich residues can temporarily tie up available nitrogen as microbes decompose them. |
| Manure | Much of its nitrogen is organic and must mineralize. | Availability depends on the material and conditions. Account for carryover and other nutrients when applying it. |
| Compost | It can contribute nitrogen while adding organic material to soil. | Nitrogen release is generally slow. Compost may also contribute substantial phosphorus or potassium, so consider its full nutrient analysis. |

How nitrogen availability changes
Warm, favorable conditions can speed decomposition and nitrogen release; cool conditions slow them. Heavy rain can leach nitrate, while saturated soil can contribute to gaseous nitrogen losses. High-carbon materials such as straw may temporarily immobilize available nitrogen because microbes use it while breaking down the residue. The University of Missouri Extension explains these transformations in Nitrogen in the Environment: Mineralization — Immobilization; Rutgers Cooperative Extension also discusses soil nitrogen dynamics in its Soil Management guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a source for a crop
Match the source to the crop’s nitrogen demand and the time when the crop needs it. Legumes can add biologically fixed nitrogen; nonlegume cover crops mainly capture and recycle nitrogen already in the soil. Compost and manure contribute nutrients, but release rates vary and their phosphorus and potassium contributions may matter as much as their nitrogen content.

- BIGGER BLOOMS & CROPS: Our all purpose fertilizer makes flowers bloom bigger and helps grow more fruit & vegetables. It works great as a flower food, fruit tree fertilizer & vegetable fertilizer.
- Check whether a material adds new nitrogen or mainly recycles existing nitrogen.
- Consider how quickly its nitrogen may become available relative to crop demand.
- Allow for temporary immobilization from carbon-rich residues.
- Consider all nutrients supplied, not nitrogen alone, particularly with compost and manure.
- Use crop-specific recommendations for your location. There is no universal application rate or single best cover crop for every soil, crop, and climate.
Soil tests do not all measure the same thing. Oregon State Extension notes that some laboratory tests for nitrogen mineralization are more useful for tracking relative changes in soil health than for directly setting fertilizer rates. For a specific crop and location, consult current regional extension guidance and choose a test appropriate to the decision you need to make.
