New Year’s Laundry Superstitions, Safer Homes, and Smarter Laundry Rooms

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some families will not wash clothes on January 1 because they believe New Year’s Day laundry can wash away good luck, wash away a loved one, or set the tone for a year full of chores. We are builders, not folklore judges, so our advice is simple: if you follow the superstition, make the pause useful.

Do not run a load. Walk the laundry area instead. Check the dryer vent. Look at the washer hoses. Test the shutoffs. Measure the cabinet gaps that annoy you every week. Notice whether the room has enough light, enough folding space, enough hamper space, and enough protection against leaks.

That one-hour New Year’s inspection can prevent bigger problems than a full hamper. Laundry rooms combine water, heat, lint, electricity, gas in some homes, vibration, and storage in a compact space. Done well, they are efficient utility rooms. Done poorly, they become moisture traps, fire risks, and daily frustration points.

Here is the practical homeowner’s guide to New Year’s Day laundry superstitions and the resolutions that actually matter: safer drying, better storage, lower utility use, smarter finishes, and realistic 2026 remodeling costs.

What Is the New Year’s Day Laundry Superstition?

The superstition usually shows up in three versions. One says washing clothes on New Year’s Day will wash away good luck. Another says it may wash away someone you love. A third says starting the year with laundry means the year will be filled with chores.

Whether you believe it or not, the custom has a useful rhythm. Most homes run laundry constantly. The average U.S. family washes about 300 loads per year, according to ENERGY STAR. That means the washer, dryer, drain, vent, and storage system are used almost every day in many households.

So if January 1 is your no-laundry day, use it as a no-laundry inspection day. You are not remodeling yet. You are collecting facts before you spend money.

A 20-Minute January 1 Laundry Room Check

  • Pull the lint screen and clean it fully, including residue from dryer sheets if buildup is visible.
  • Look behind the dryer for crushed, kinked, plastic, or thin foil ducting.
  • Go outside and confirm the dryer vent flap opens freely and is not blocked by lint, snow, leaves, mulch, or a screen.
  • Check washer hoses for bulges, cracks, corrosion, or slow drips at the valves.
  • Turn hot and cold shutoff valves gently to confirm they move.
  • Look under and around the washer for staining, cupped flooring, soft trim, or mildew odor.
  • Run your hand along shelves and cabinets to find clutter zones that need pullouts, bins, or better spacing.
  • Measure the room: appliance width, depth, door swing, walkway, counter height, and any unused wall space.

On our job sites, the laundry rooms that work best are not always the largest. They are the ones planned around clearances, airflow, drainage, lighting, and the way the household actually moves clothes through the space.

The Laundry Resolutions Worth Keeping

Most New Year’s resolutions fail because they are vague. Laundry resolutions should be mechanical, visible, and easy to repeat.

Clean the Dryer Lint Path

Clean the lint filter before or after every load. That is the daily habit. At least once a year, clean the dryer vent duct from the appliance to the exterior termination. If drying times increase, clothes come out hotter than normal, the laundry room feels humid, or lint appears around the exterior vent, do it sooner.

Fire data makes this more than a housekeeping preference. NFPA estimates U.S. fire departments responded to about 15,970 home fires per year involving clothes dryers or washing machines in 2010-2014. Those fires caused an estimated 13 civilian deaths, 440 injuries, and $238 million in direct property damage annually. Most involved dryers, and failure to clean was the leading cause category. USFA data also reports about 2,900 residential clothes dryer fires per year in 2008-2010, with failure to clean accounting for 34 percent of them.

Use Better Washer Hoses

If your washer still has rubber supply hoses, replace them with braided stainless steel hoses. Most are inexpensive compared with one water damage claim, and they are especially valuable for second-floor laundry rooms. Leave enough slack for service, but not so much that hoses kink behind the machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Label the shutoff valves. Everyone in the house should know which valves stop the washer water supply. If the valves are stiff, corroded, hidden, or impossible to reach without moving the washer, that belongs on the upgrade list.

Wash Full Loads, Not Overloaded Loads

Running full loads saves water and energy. Overloading does the opposite. It reduces cleaning performance, strains the washer suspension and bearings, and can make vibration worse. For front-loaders and high-efficiency top-loaders, follow the appliance manual for load height and detergent quantity. Too much detergent leaves residue, creates odor, and can make clothes rinse poorly.

Use Cold Water When It Makes Sense

Cold water works for many everyday loads and reduces energy use. Hot water still has its place for certain whites, towels, heavily soiled items, or sanitation needs based on the fabric label and detergent directions. The practical resolution is not “always cold.” It is “default to cold unless the load needs heat.”

Dryer Venting Is a Construction Detail, Not an Afterthought

When homeowners ask us to make a laundry room prettier, we still start behind the machines. Dryer vent routing affects drying time, energy use, lint buildup, fire risk, and where appliances can safely sit.

The best dryer duct is short, smooth, rigid or semi-rigid metal, and accessible for cleaning. A direct path to the exterior wall is usually better than moving the dryer to a visually convenient spot that requires a long duct with multiple elbows.

What We Look For on Site

  • Duct material: Avoid plastic and thin foil ducts. Use code-appropriate metal ducting and listed transition duct.
  • Crushing: A dryer pushed tight to the wall can crush the transition duct and restrict airflow.
  • Elbows: Every turn adds resistance. Fewer elbows usually means better performance.
  • Exterior termination: The vent hood should open freely and should not have a screen that catches lint.
  • Access: If nobody can clean the run, it will not be cleaned often enough.

Modern residential codes limit dryer exhaust duct length based on the dryer manufacturer and code tables. The 2024 IRC includes dryer exhaust provisions, including equivalent length identification where concealed ducting is used. In plain English: the longer and more complicated the run, the more carefully it needs to be designed and documented.

A recessed dryer box can help in tight rooms. It lets the transition duct sit partly inside a framed recess so the dryer can move closer to the wall without crushing the duct. It is not a magic fix for a poor vent route, but it is often a clean solution in closets, mudroom-laundry combinations, and narrow utility rooms.

Electrical, Plumbing, and Permits: Where Laundry Rooms Get Serious

Laundry rooms are not just cabinets and tile. Moving a washer or dryer can trigger electrical, plumbing, venting, and permit requirements. That is where a remodel becomes a construction project.

Electrical Planning

Most electric dryers need a dedicated 240-volt circuit. Washers need properly protected receptacles. Many laundry area receptacles now require GFCI protection, and depending on the circuit and local code adoption, AFCI protection may also apply. Local amendments matter, so this is not a place for guesswork.

When we plan laundry electrical work, we look at the actual appliances, not just the room. A stacked unit, gas dryer, heat pump dryer, compact washer, or laundry center may have different requirements. We also plan outlets for ironing, charging a cordless vacuum, task lighting, and future service access.

Plumbing and Drainage

A washer needs hot and cold supply, a properly sized drain and standpipe, accessible shutoffs, and a layout that allows the machine to be serviced. If you are moving the washer across the room, into a closet, or upstairs, the cost is driven less by the washer and more by the path for water supply, drain, venting, floor protection, and wall repair.

For second-floor laundry, we like to see a drain pan, leak alarm, accessible shutoffs, and a vibration-conscious layout from the beginning. Do not wait until cabinets and flooring are installed to think about water escape. Upper-floor laundry is convenient, but a failed hose or overflowing washer can damage finished ceilings, insulation, flooring, trim, and electrical below.

When Permits Are Usually Involved

Rules vary by city and county, but permits are commonly required when you add or relocate plumbing, add a 240-volt dryer circuit, run a new gas line, modify structural framing, create a new laundry room addition, or significantly change exhaust routing. A basic cosmetic refresh with paint, shelves, and like-for-like appliance replacement may not need the same review.

For Bettesworth projects, we treat permit questions early because they affect sequencing. Walls may need to stay open for inspection. Electrical and plumbing rough-ins must happen before drywall. Vent routing may need to be confirmed before cabinets are ordered.

2026 Laundry Room Remodel Costs

For 2026, a realistic U.S. laundry room remodel usually falls between about $6,000 and $17,000, with national averages around $11,000. Smaller refreshes can stay closer to $1,300 to $5,000 when hookups remain in place. Major remodels, additions, or upper-floor relocations can move into the $17,000 to $30,000-plus range, and high-end laundry-mudroom combinations or complex additions can reach $42,000 to $65,000 or more in higher-cost markets.

Project Type Typical 2026 Cost What It Usually Includes
Minor laundry refresh $1,300-$5,000 Paint, shelving, basic flooring, hardware, simple lighting, appliance replacement with existing hookups
Mid-range remodel $5,000-$15,000 or $6,000-$17,000 New flooring, cabinets, counters, lighting, utility upgrades, appliance installation, improved storage
Major remodel or layout change $17,000-$30,000+ Moved hookups, new dryer vent route, electrical upgrades, higher-end cabinetry, wall repair, structural coordination
Laundry room addition, 35 sq. ft. $5,000-$11,000 Small dedicated addition or conversion, depending on utilities and structure
Laundry room addition, 60 sq. ft. $9,000-$18,000 More usable room for appliances, counters, cabinets, and hamper storage
Laundry room addition, 100 sq. ft. $14,000-$30,000 Larger laundry, mudroom, storage, or utility combination

Appliance installation is its own line item. With existing hookups, washer and dryer installation labor is often about $100 to $300. New hookups commonly run $650 to $2,000. Gas dryer installation may be about $150 to $350, while stackable installation often lands around $150 to $300. Actual cost depends on access, appliance type, venting, stairs, shutoffs, and whether old units must be disconnected and hauled away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Washer and dryer set prices vary widely. In 2026, mainstream sets commonly fall around $500 to $3,000, with some recommended pairs ranging roughly from $875 to $4,200. Retail sale pricing often shows popular sets around $1,198 to $1,538, while stacked ENERGY STAR laundry centers may be around $1,899. Capacity, gas versus electric, compact sizing, finish, smart features, and sale timing all affect the number.

Soft Costs Homeowners Forget

If the project becomes an addition or structural remodel, include soft costs. Permits may run about $150 to $2,000. Architect plans can be around $550 to $2,200. Structural engineering may cost about $350 to $800. Interior design support can run about $200 to $2,100, depending on scope.

Those numbers are not decorative extras when the project involves structure, drainage, or a new footprint. They are part of getting the work designed, approved, built, and inspected correctly.

Storage That Actually Works in a Laundry Room

Laundry storage fails when cabinets are chosen before the workflow is understood. Before ordering built-ins, measure the appliances and the chores.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with appliance clearances. Confirm width, depth, door swing, dryer vent connection, washer hose location, pedestal height, and service access. Then plan the path: dirty clothes in, sorting, washing, drying, folding, hanging, ironing or steaming, and clean clothes out.

Useful Storage Features

  • Full-extension drawers: Better than deep upper cabinets for detergent, stain removers, dryer balls, and cleaning supplies.
  • Pullout hampers: Good for families that sort by color, fabric, sports gear, or towels.
  • Folding counter: Best placed directly above front-load machines or beside the dryer if space allows.
  • Hanging rod: A simple rod over a counter or drip zone saves dryer time and protects shirts, uniforms, and delicates.
  • Fold-down drying rack: Useful in compact rooms where a standing rack blocks the walkway.
  • Tall utility cabinet: Good for broom, mop, vacuum, ironing board, and bulk supplies.

For detergent shelves, avoid placing heavy bottles so high that they are awkward to lift. For hampers, leave enough clearance to remove the bin without scraping cabinet faces. For wall cabinets above machines, account for the appliance lid if you use a top-load washer.

Seasonal storage can share a laundry room only when moisture is controlled. Paper goods, holiday decor, keepsakes, and cardboard boxes do not belong beside chronic humidity, leaking hoses, or an unconditioned exterior wall.

Moisture-Resistant Finishes Beat Pretty Finishes

A laundry room should be easy to clean and tolerant of water. That does not mean it has to look industrial, but the materials need to match the risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Flooring

Luxury vinyl plank, porcelain tile, sheet vinyl, and sealed concrete can all work well. The right choice depends on budget, subfloor, room location, and whether the laundry is upstairs. Carpet is a poor fit. Hardwood can be risky unless the design accepts the maintenance and water exposure.

For second-floor rooms, we pay close attention to transitions, pans, drains, and thresholds. A beautiful floor that directs water into a hallway is not a good laundry floor.

Walls, Trim, and Counters

Use durable, washable paint. PVC or well-sealed trim can be smart in splash-prone areas. Counters should resist water, detergent, and abrasion. Laminate can be cost-effective. Solid surface, quartz, and sealed butcher block each have a place, but butcher block needs maintenance and should not be used casually in a wet zone.

Lighting

Laundry rooms are often dim. That is one reason people miss stains, mismatched socks, lint accumulation, and small leaks. Add strong overhead lighting and task lighting over folding counters and machines. A practical target is bright, even light without shadows behind the washer or inside deep cabinets.

Appliance Efficiency and Buying Decisions

ENERGY STAR-certified clothes washers use about 20 percent less energy and about 30 percent less water than regular washers. ENERGY STAR also reports full-sized certified washers use about 14 gallons per load compared with about 20 gallons for a standard washer, with about $530 in lifetime energy savings.

Those savings matter, but the best appliance is still the one that fits the room and the household. A large-capacity washer can help a family reduce loads, but only if the dryer can keep up and the room has space for baskets. A stackable pair can save floor area, but controls must be reachable and service access must be planned. A front-load pair can support a folding counter, but door swing and ventilation around the gasket matter.

Before buying, measure the appliance depth including hoses, dryer duct, handles, and door swing. Many machines advertised by cabinet-opening width still need more real-world depth than homeowners expect. If the laundry is in a hallway closet, also measure the path from the delivery truck to the final location, including stairs, turns, door casings, and railings.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

Some laundry improvements are good homeowner projects. Others should be handled by licensed trades or a remodeling contractor because mistakes can cause fire, flood, gas leaks, or failed inspections.

Reasonable DIY Projects

  • Installing freestanding shelves or simple wall-mounted shelving into proper blocking or studs
  • Painting walls and trim with washable coatings
  • Adding labeled bins, hampers, and drawer organizers
  • Replacing a visible, accessible washer hose if the valves are in good condition and you know how to check for leaks
  • Installing a battery-powered leak alarm under or behind the washer

Hire a Pro For

  • Moving washer supply lines, drain lines, or standpipes
  • Adding or relocating a 240-volt dryer circuit
  • Gas dryer line work
  • New dryer vent routing through walls, ceilings, roofs, or masonry
  • Second-floor laundry conversions
  • Structural framing, floor reinforcement, or additions
  • Built-in cabinetry that must coordinate with plumbing, electrical, and appliance clearances

The dividing line is consequence. If a mistake only means repainting a shelf wall, DIY may be fine. If a mistake can put water into the ceiling below, trap lint in a concealed duct, overload a circuit, or fail inspection, bring in the right professional.

A Practical New Year’s Laundry Room Plan

If you want to turn the superstition into a useful annual habit, use this sequence.

  1. January 1: Skip the load if that is your tradition. Inspect lint, hoses, shutoffs, flooring, lighting, storage, and vent termination.
  2. Week 1: Clean the dryer vent, replace questionable hoses, reduce detergent clutter, and label shutoffs.
  3. Week 2: Measure the room and appliances. Include door swings, walkways, hookups, vent route, and cabinet clearances.
  4. Week 3: Price the project honestly. Separate cosmetic work, appliance replacement, utility changes, cabinetry, flooring, permits, and design costs.
  5. Week 4: Decide whether this is a refresh, remodel, relocation, or addition. That decision controls the budget, schedule, and permit path.

A minor refresh may take a weekend or two. A mid-range remodel can take several weeks once materials are selected and trades are scheduled. A major relocation or addition can take longer because design, permitting, rough-in inspections, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, and appliance installation all need to line up.

The superstition says not to start the year with laundry. The builder’s version is better: do not start the year ignoring the room that handles 300 loads, hot air, lint, water pressure, drainage, and storage. Give it one focused inspection, then decide what deserves a simple habit change and what deserves a proper remodel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it bad luck to do laundry on New Year’s Day?

That is the superstition, but it is folklore, not a building rule. Many people believe January 1 laundry can wash away good luck, wash away a loved one, or lead to a year full of chores. A practical approach is to skip the load if you follow the tradition and use the day to inspect your laundry room.

What should I do instead of laundry on January 1?

Clean the lint filter, check the dryer vent outlet, inspect washer hoses, test shutoff valves, look for water stains, and measure storage problems. It is a good annual safety and planning check.

How much does a laundry room remodel cost in 2026?

A typical U.S. laundry room remodel runs about $6,000 to $17,000, with averages around $11,000. Minor refreshes can be $1,300 to $5,000, while major layout changes or additions can reach $17,000 to $30,000-plus.

Do I need a permit to move my washer and dryer?

Often, yes. Moving plumbing, drains, dryer circuits, gas lines, exhaust ducts, or structural framing commonly requires permits. Like-for-like appliance replacement with existing hookups is usually simpler, but local rules control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

Clean the lint filter every load and clean the dryer vent duct at least annually. Clean it sooner if clothes take longer to dry, the dryer runs hot, the room feels humid, or lint builds up at the exterior vent.

What are the best laundry resolutions for homeowners?

Clean lint every load, clean the vent annually, avoid overloading the washer, use cold water when appropriate, replace rubber hoses with braided stainless, label shutoffs, add leak detection, and avoid running laundry appliances while asleep or away.
