New construction planned on I-55 in Cape Girardeau County is the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Exit 93 Interchange Improvements project, not a statewide widening of I-55. Phase one is scheduled to rehabilitate three bridges, replace the Silver Springs Road/Business 61 traffic signal with a two-lane roundabout, and close access ramps at Route 74. MoDOT lists a tentative November 2026 letting, with construction as early as 2027. A local report published October 26, 2026, says work is expected to begin in spring 2027 and last about two years, but the schedule remains provisional until a contract is awarded.
What is the I-55 Exit 93 construction project?
The work is centered on the US 61/Kingshighway flyover and the Silver Springs Road/Business 61 intersection at Exit 93 in Cape Girardeau County. MoDOT identifies the project as 9P3122. It is the first phase of a preferred interchange plan presented at a July 27, 2022, public meeting.

After a reinspection with consulting engineers, MoDOT determined that the flyover can be rehabilitated rather than immediately replaced. Project Manager Tim Pickett said the rehabilitation is intended to extend the bridge’s service life.
Phase one includes these elements:
- Rehabilitation of the southbound US 61 flyover over I-55.
- Rehabilitation of the northbound I-55 bridge over the BNSF railroad near Route 74.
- Rehabilitation of the northbound I-55 bridge over Route 74.
- Replacement of the Silver Springs Road traffic signal with a two-lane roundabout.
- Closure of access ramps at Route 74 as part of the interchange changes.
The project page describes this as the first implementation stage, so later phases could address additional interchange needs. Those future decisions would be evaluated for safety and conflict reduction, merging and access, traffic level of service, bridge replacement requirements, clearance and flooding, construction disruption, and cost.

When will Exit 93 construction start?
MoDOT currently lists a tentative November 2026 letting, meaning the agency plans to advertise the work for contractor bids at that time. Its schedule allows construction to begin as early as 2027. In an October 26, 2026, report, MoDOT resident engineer Zachary Lee said the expected start is spring 2027 and that construction could take about two years.
Those dates are not final. The contractor had not been awarded as of October 26, 2026, and the letting remains marked tentative on MoDOT’s project information. The awarded contractor, weather, utility coordination, and final traffic-control plans can all affect the actual start and completion dates.

Drivers should expect an extended work zone around the flyover, Route 74 bridges, and Silver Springs Road. Lee said the initial staging is expected to use one-lane, head-to-head traffic for the first two to three months. In that arrangement, opposing directions share one side of the roadway while crews work on the other side.

The purpose is to keep the bridges under construction while maintaining a controlled route through the interchange. Drivers should allow extra time, follow temporary signs rather than familiar ramp movements, and watch for lane shifts or reduced speeds. Because the final traffic-control schedule had not been confirmed, travelers should check MoDOT’s current project notices before making a trip through Exit 93.
What changes at Silver Springs Road?
The existing traffic signal at Silver Springs Road and Business 61 is planned to become a two-lane roundabout. Entering vehicles will yield to traffic already circulating, and drivers must select the correct lane before entering so they can exit toward their intended destination. Large trucks may use the roundabout’s truck apron or wider swept path, so passenger-vehicle drivers should avoid stopping beside a truck while it circulates.
What happens to Route 74 ramps?
Access ramps at Route 74 are planned to close. The exact detours and signing will be established through the contractor’s approved traffic-control plan, so motorists should not assume today’s ramp connections will remain available during each construction stage.

Why is MoDOT rehabilitating the flyover instead of replacing it?
MoDOT says the US 61 flyover is in poor condition, but its inspection concluded that rehabilitation can extend the bridge’s useful life. Rehabilitation generally allows an agency to address structural and surface deficiencies while retaining the existing bridge, whereas full replacement would require a different design, longer construction sequence, or greater cost. The selected approach is specific to the inspection findings for this bridge; it does not mean every older bridge on I-55 will receive the same treatment.
How much will the project cost?
Published planning documents show two slightly different estimates. They are not the final price of an awarded contract.

Is this a general I-55 expansion?
No. The “new construction planned on I-55” description refers to targeted bridge, ramp, and intersection work at Exit 93 in Cape Girardeau County. The phase-one scope does not describe adding continuous I-55 lanes across the region. Most of the disruption will be concentrated at the interchange and its connecting roads.

What should local drivers do before work begins?
- Identify an alternate route in case Route 74 ramps are closed during your travel period.

What does a tentative project letting mean?
A letting is the bid-advertisement and selection stage in which MoDOT seeks contractor offers. A tentative letting date can change before advertising, and construction timing is more certain only after the contract is awarded.
Will every Exit 93 improvement be built in this contract?
No. The listed work is phase one of a preferred interchange plan. Additional improvements, if advanced, would be considered separately using criteria such as safety, traffic operations, bridge needs, flooding and clearance, disruption, and cost.
