Mark both ends of each hydraulic hose with a consistent color and a clear written identifier, then keep a matching key with the machine. Before reconnecting a line, check its label and port against the machine’s approved service information. The marker helps identify the intended line; it does not prove the hose or fittings are compatible.
How to mark hydraulic hoses so you can identify them
- Choose a small color set. Pick colors that remain distinguishable in the machine’s working conditions. Assign each color to a documented circuit, port, or attachment function; there is no universal hydraulic color code established by the sources cited here.
- Mark both ends. Place the identification where it can be seen at each connection point. Pair the color with text or a number—such as a circuit name, port number, or attachment function—so the meaning does not depend on color alone.
- Keep a machine-specific key. Record what each label means in the machine’s service records or near the connection point. Update the key when hoses, circuits, or attachments change.
- Verify before connecting. Compare the identifier and intended port with the machine manual or approved service information. If the line’s identity or suitability is uncertain, stop and resolve the uncertainty rather than guessing.
Choose a marker that fits the work
A quick color cue may be enough for routine identification, while maintenance records may call for more detail. Compare options by readability at the connection, resistance to the actual environment, whether the mark carries text as well as color, fit with the coupling and installation, and how much information the job requires.
Color and polarity markers
KENNFIXX offers purpose-made markers in 10 colors, engraved with plus and minus symbols, according to the maker’s product page. That is a product-specific identification system, not an industry-wide color standard.
Hose tags
Tags can carry information beyond a quick color cue, including hose type and part number, ratings, fluid, installation date, supplier, or equipment location. Big City Manufacturing lists plastic, stainless steel, aluminum, and brass tag options on its hose tag page. Select a tag for the operating environment and confirm that it suits the hose and coupling design.

- Outback Wrap Hydraulic Hose Markers - 4-Pair (Remotes 1-4) This package contains (8) Outback Wrap Hydraulic Hose Markers for remotes 1 to 4 (green, blue, brown and black). The wraps will fit 1/4"" to 1-1/2"" hoses.
- Tag Identification System: Outback Wrap Hydraulic Hose Markers, also known as hydraulic hose tags, use a simple hydraulic hose identification system. A number system is laser etched into the hose to make it easy to identify and pair equipment connectors. Wraps are color-coded, and numbers and letters are laser etched into the hose to make it easy to identify and pair equipment connectors. Our hose markers are one-size-fits-all for hoses 1/4"" TO 1-1/2".
- Industrial Hose Protection: Bundle, contain, and protect hoses from damage using our durable hose protection solutions. Wraps can withstand temperatures from -60 degrees F (-50 degrees C) to 212 degrees F (100 degrees C). Made with polyethylene to protect from grease, oil, or dirt to prevent cracking and fading.
- Improves Safety & Efficiency: Outback Wraps' innovative solution to streamline hose management on various farming equipment has been recognized by the Worksafe Organization. Helping to keep Farmers and their equipment safe by tagging and organizing hydraulics hoses efficiently.
- Industry Recommended: Industry leaders are praising our product for its simplicity and time-saving benefits, recommending it to fellow farmers and planning to order more for future use. The product's innovative design has impressed users, providing a solution to the common problem of organizing hoses and making connections.
Protected text-and-color labels
Sani-Tech West describes its SureView system as a printed polyolefin label on a hose cuff, covered by FEP heat shrink. See the maker’s SureView page for its product description. As with tags, suitability depends on conditions such as temperature, abrasion, and oil exposure.
Digital tracking for specialized assemblies
For more detailed records, CEJN describes its CIS NFC system for ultra-high-pressure hose kits, associating technical data and inspection history with each kit. It is a specialized tracking approach rather than a substitute for a clear identifier at the connection; details are on CEJN’s CIS page.

Color coding does not establish hose compatibility
A label answers “which line is this supposed to be?” It does not verify hose selection, fitting selection, or assembly quality. Parker’s Hose and fittings terminology handbook treats the hose, fittings, assembly equipment, and know-how as an integrated system and warns: “Never mix & match one manufacturer’s fittings with hoses from another manufacturer!” Follow the applicable manufacturer assembly data and the machine’s service information; never treat a matching color as permission to substitute components. See Parker’s handbook.
Do not infer a universal code from a manufacturer’s product markings either. Gates describes distinctive design and pressure color coding for its own MegaSys products for stock or service identification in its catalog; that description does not establish a general meaning for hose colors across brands or machines.

Use standards only within their stated scope
The SIST EN 12115:2021 listing concerns rubber and thermoplastic chemical hoses, not all hydraulic hose applications. Its identification section describes durable identification bands near the fitting and permits permanently adhered labels carrying the same information, including colored labels at the coupling. The SIST / iTeh listing is not a basis for assuming that the standard governs a particular hydraulic installation. For regulated work, consult the actual standard and the requirements that apply to the equipment and application.
