chicken feed

Nest veterans launched Mill: what the $33/month food-scrap-to-chicken-feed service did—and what it costs now

Mill’s original $33/month food-scrap service turned dried household grounds into a potential chicken-feed ingredient. Here is how the system worked, what changed by 2026, and what buyers need to know now.

The $33-per-month figure was real—but it was Mill’s January 2023 launch price, not its current residential price. Mill, founded by former Nest colleagues Matt Rogers and Harry Tannenbaum, paired a connected kitchen bin with a return-shipping service. The bin dried and ground household food scraps into a shelf-stable material called Food Grounds, which Mill could process into a chicken-feed ingredient.

As of August 12, 2026, Mill’s residential offering is structured differently: the Food Recycler is listed from $799, or $67 per month for 12 months, while Food Grounds pickup is a separate $16-per-month plan when billed annually. The system is unusual because it is not simply a countertop composter; it is an appliance, logistics network, and feed-processing pathway in one.

What Mill originally promised for $33 a month

Mill came out of stealth on January 17, 2023. The company was founded in 2020 by Matt Rogers and Harry Tannenbaum, who had previously worked together at Nest. Its launch proposition was straightforward but unusual: instead of sending household food scraps to a landfill or asking residents to manage a conventional compost pile, customers would put the scraps into a connected Mill bin and let the system prepare them for return to the company.

The original annual-billing price was $33 per month. Month-to-month billing cost more. The package included the bin, filters, return boxes, labels, and shipping. When the bin filled, the customer used the app to request a prepaid box and USPS pickup.

Compost Tumbler Bin Composter Dual Chamber 43 Gallon (Bundled with Pearson's Gardening Gloves)
  • ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
  • ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
  • ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
  • ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
  • ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.

Mill’s pitch was therefore broader than “buy a food recycler.” The customer was paying for an ongoing material-handling loop:

  1. Put household food scraps into the Mill bin.
  2. Allow the appliance to dry and grind the material, generally overnight.
  3. Store the resulting Food Grounds until the bin is full.
  4. Request a prepaid return box through the app.
  5. Send the grounds back through USPS for inspection and processing.

The process reduced the scraps’ volume and suppressed odors, making storage and shipping more practical than sending wet food waste through the mail. Mill said the returned material could be processed into an ingredient for chicken feed.

How the Mill bin works

Mill accepts a broad range of household food scraps, including many leftovers, bones, eggshells, and some soiled paper products. The device does not operate like a traditional compost pile. Its primary job is to dry and grind the material, rather than independently create finished compost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters. A conventional compost system uses biological decomposition to produce compost over time. Mill’s appliance creates dried, ground Food Grounds. Those grounds may then be:

  • Returned to Mill through its shipping program;
  • Placed into an appropriate local organics or composting stream; or
  • Properly composted before being used in a garden, where local composting conditions and applicable guidance allow it.

Mill describes its current device cycle as including drying, grinding, and heating. That processing helps reduce moisture and volume and is part of the company’s safety approach for material that may enter its commercial feed pathway. It does not mean every item placed in the bin automatically becomes approved chicken feed.

What happens after the Food Grounds are returned

Mill says returned Food Grounds are inspected for contaminants such as produce stickers and twist ties. Material that meets the company’s quality standard is processed into a chicken-feed ingredient and sent to Wilcox Farms and other small farms in the Pacific Northwest.

Mill also says that a batch failing its quality standard is composted rather than sent to landfill. That is an important qualification to the headline: the service creates a potential chicken-feed ingredient, not a guarantee that every customer’s grounds become chicken feed.

Mill describes several controls for the commercial feed pathway:

  • Food-library guidance for customers;
  • Nightly drying, grinding, and heating;
  • Inspection when material arrives at the processing facility;
  • Manufacturing controls;
  • A final microbial-control step; and
  • Nutritional and toxicological testing of the final feed ingredient.

These are Mill’s reported process claims. They should be understood as the company’s description of its controls, not as independent verification of every stage or every environmental result.

Is Mill’s material actually chicken feed?

Mill’s own guidance describes Food Grounds as a feed ingredient, not a complete poultry ration. That difference is essential for anyone keeping backyard chickens.

Food Grounds should not replace nutritionally complete poultry feed. A backyard chicken owner using the material would need to provide other appropriate feed and follow ordinary poultry-care guidance. Mill also warns that some scraps—including avocado pits and onions—can be harmful to chickens if fed directly. The fact that a scrap can be processed by a machine does not mean it is safe to hand directly to a chicken.

For a flock owner, the sensible interpretation is that Mill’s processed grounds may be a supplemental input within a broader feeding plan, not the flock’s sole diet. Anyone buying complete chicken feed should treat that as the nutritional foundation and consider Food Grounds, if used at all, only as a supplement consistent with manufacturer and animal-care guidance.

What changed after the $33 launch

The $33/month launch offer should not be used as Mill’s current residential price. Mill’s current product pages, as described in its August 2026 materials, list the residential Food Recycler from $799, or $67 per month for 12 months.

A separate configuration page lists:

Current configuration Listed price Notes
Mill Food Recycler From $799, or $67/month for 12 months Base residential product listing
Mill Essential $999 Configuration with model-specific features
Mill Plus From $1,149 Higher-priced configuration with additional model differences

The models differ in features including height, lid operation, child and pet safety, and finish. The exact configuration a household needs depends on its space, users, and safety priorities.

Food Grounds pickup is now separate from the purchased bin. Mill’s support material lists pickup at $16 per month when billed annually, charged as $192 plus tax upfront. Pickup availability depends on address eligibility, and USPS pickup or drop-off is used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a household buying the lowest listed $799 unit and adding one year of the pickup plan, simple arithmetic gives a pre-tax starting point of $991. That is an illustration, not a guaranteed all-in quote: the final amount can depend on the selected model, taxes, financing, address eligibility, and the terms shown during ordering.

Do you need the pickup subscription?

Not necessarily. The pickup plan is most relevant to a household that wants Mill to take responsibility for the Food Grounds after the bin fills. A customer with access to a suitable local composting or organics program may be able to use the grounds locally instead, subject to that program’s rules.

That changes the economics considerably. The current product can be viewed as two separate decisions:

How the feed-regulatory pathway should be described

Mill announced in 2023 that the Association of American Feed Control Officials Ingredient Definition Committee unanimously approved a definition for Dried Recovered Household Food. Mill later stated that its feed ingredient was approved for commercial distribution in Washington State, where its feed-manufacturing facility operates.

The careful wording is therefore: Mill’s ingredient is approved for commercial distribution in Washington under the applicable regulatory pathway. That is not the same as saying the product is approved nationwide. Distribution or use in other states can involve the relevant commercial-feed licensing requirements.

This regulatory distinction also explains why the company’s process includes screening and testing. Household food scraps can contain contaminants, packaging fragments, and ingredients that are unsuitable for direct animal feeding. The material must meet the applicable quality and manufacturing requirements before it can enter the commercial pathway.

Mill compared with ordinary composting

Mill addresses a different problem from a backyard compost pile. A compost pile requires outdoor space, management of moisture and carbon-rich material, adequate aeration, and enough time for decomposition. Mill is designed for kitchens and households that want to process scraps indoors, reduce odor, and avoid storing wet waste.

But the convenience comes with trade-offs:

Question Mill Traditional composting
Primary process Dries and grinds food scraps Biological decomposition
Indoor use Designed for kitchen or household use Usually requires an outdoor or managed system
Output Food Grounds Finished compost when properly managed
Ongoing logistics Filters and, for the return loop, boxes and shipping Local management, collection, or drop-off
Potential downstream use Mill’s feed-ingredient pathway, local organics processing, or composting Soil amendment after composting is complete

Mill is best understood as a controlled preprocessing and collection system. It can make food scraps easier to handle, but it does not eliminate the need for a downstream destination.

Mill versus other countertop food recyclers

Products such as Lomi and FoodCycler are relevant alternatives for readers who want an electric food waste composter or food recycler at home. They are not interchangeable with Mill’s service.

Option What it is designed to do Important distinction
Mill Dry and grind household scraps, with an optional return loop and Mill’s commercial feed pathway Connected to a logistics and processing service
Lomi Create a dry, soil-oriented household by-product Does not represent Mill’s chicken-feed pathway
FoodCycler Process food waste into a dry, soil-oriented by-product Does not represent Mill’s chicken-feed pathway
Local composting Biologically process organics through a municipal, community, or private program May avoid appliance purchase and parcel shipping, but availability varies

The right choice depends on the desired endpoint. Choose Mill for the combination of indoor processing and the possibility of returning grounds into its feed system. Choose a conventional or local organics route when soil-building or local diversion is the priority. Choose another appliance when you want in-home drying and grinding without Mill’s return subscription.

What Mill says about its environmental impact

The environmental case starts with a real waste-management problem. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies wasted food in landfills as a major source of landfill methane and notes that diverting food waste from landfills can reduce methane emissions.

Mill has published its own customer and device statistics, but they need to be labeled as company-reported figures rather than universal, independently verified results. In June 2024, Mill reported that its system had processed more than two million pounds of household food during its first year. The company also said internal device data showed roughly a 20% reduction in the amount of material added during customers’ first four months of use.

In June 2025, Mill reported that households and workplaces using its systems had kept nearly 10 million pounds of wasted food out of landfills. It also reported a survey-based increase in the share of food scraps recovered by customers.

Mill’s updated life-cycle analysis estimated 735 kilograms of carbon-dioxide equivalent avoided per device per year under its modeled typical-use case. The estimate rose to 899 kilograms for households that previously landfilled food and returned the grounds to Mill for chicken-feed production.

Those figures are model-dependent. They can change with the household’s previous disposal method, participation rate, shipping and processing assumptions, electricity use, and what ultimately happens to the grounds. They should not be presented as guaranteed savings for every user or as independently verified performance.

Mill’s move into workplaces and commercial kitchens

Mill’s business is no longer limited to residential subscriptions. In April 2025, the company launched Mill for Workplace, combining food recyclers with fleet-management software and analytics. The offering targets offices, data centers, retail businesses, hotels, universities, and municipal buildings. Mill said it had deployments in hundreds of such locations and cited early customers including Vornado Realty Trust and Duolingo.

That expansion is relevant to building owners, facilities teams, property managers, and construction professionals planning waste infrastructure. A commercial deployment requires more than placing a household unit in a break room. Operators must consider collection points, staff workflow, contamination control, equipment placement, electrical service, ventilation and heat considerations, storage, cleaning, access, and the final hauling or processing route.

For larger facilities evaluating commercial food waste recycling, Mill’s workplace and commercial plans point toward a managed system with fleet data and analytics rather than a simple appliance purchase. The business case would still need to be tested against local organics hauling, labor costs, building operations, and the facility’s actual food-waste volume.

Announced 2027 partnerships are future plans, not completed deployments

In December 2025, Amazon and Mill announced an investment and collaboration involving Whole Foods Market. The announcement said the companies planned to begin deploying Mill Commercial in Whole Foods back-of-house operations in 2027. The intended pathway would process fruit and vegetable scraps into a chicken-feed ingredient for Whole Foods private-label egg suppliers. The announcement also described AI-assisted measurement and characterization of commercial food waste.

In April 2026, Mill announced a strategic partnership with Compass Group North America to deploy Mill Commercial in corporate campuses, hospitals, universities, stadiums, and other food-service locations beginning in 2027.

A practical decision guide for households

Mill may make sense if you:

  • Want to process food scraps indoors and reduce wet-waste odor;
  • Have enough kitchen or utility-room space for the selected model;
  • Value a managed return pathway rather than maintaining a compost system;
  • Are willing to pay the appliance cost plus any ongoing pickup cost; and
  • Have an address eligible for Mill’s Food Grounds service.

Look at local composting or organics collection first if you:

  • Already have reliable curbside food-scrap collection;
  • Can use a community or private composting program;
  • Want the material handled locally rather than shipped by USPS; or
  • Do not want a separate appliance and filter-maintenance obligation.

Consider another countertop recycler if you:

  • Mainly want a dry, garden-oriented by-product;
  • Do not need Mill’s chicken-feed pathway;
  • Prefer to compare appliance-only options; or
  • Cannot use Mill’s return service at your address.

Questions to answer before ordering

  1. What is the current total price? Confirm the appliance model, financing or payment terms, tax, filters, and whether Food Grounds pickup is included or separate.
  2. Is pickup available at your address? Use Mill’s current eligibility flow. Do not assume USPS return service is available in every location.
  3. What will you do with the grounds? Decide between Mill’s return plan, a permitted local organics route, and properly managed composting before buying.
  4. Do you expect to feed chickens? Treat the material only as a potential feed ingredient or supplement. It is not a complete poultry ration.
  5. Are you evaluating the system for a building? Compare equipment, staffing, contamination controls, storage, power, cleaning, hauling, and analytics with existing commercial organics services.

How to read the claims: Product pricing, processing descriptions, customer-volume figures, life-cycle estimates, regulatory statements, and partnership timelines above are attributed to Mill or to the organizations making the relevant announcement. Mill’s impact statistics and safety controls are company-reported. General landfill-methane context comes from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mill still $33 per month?

No. The $33-per-month price applied to Mill’s January 2023 residential launch when billed annually. As of August 12, 2026, Mill lists its Food Recycler from $799, or $67 per month for 12 months, and lists Food Grounds pickup separately at $16 per month when billed annually, charged as $192 plus tax upfront.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Mill turn every household’s scraps into chicken feed?

No. Mill says returned grounds are inspected for contaminants. Material that meets its quality standard can be processed into a chicken-feed ingredient, while material that fails the standard is composted rather than sent to landfill.

Can I feed Mill Food Grounds to backyard chickens?

Mill describes Food Grounds as a feed ingredient, not a complete poultry ration. Backyard chicken owners should provide appropriate complete feed and should not directly feed chickens scraps that may be harmful, including avocado pits and onions.

Is Mill a composting machine?

Not in the conventional sense. The appliance primarily dries and grinds food scraps. The resulting Food Grounds can be returned to Mill, directed into an appropriate organics stream, or properly composted before garden use.

Is Mill available everywhere in the United States?

Do not assume so. Mill’s pickup service depends on address eligibility, and customers should check the current ordering and pickup flow for their location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the Whole Foods and Compass Group Mill installations already operating?

The announcements described deployments beginning in 2027. As of August 12, 2026, they should be treated as planned future deployments rather than completed installations.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Mill’s original $33/month offer was a 2023 launch membership that combined a food-scrap-drying bin with prepaid returns. The current residential model is more expensive and separates the appliance from the Food Grounds pickup plan. Mill’s distinctive advantage is the potential path from household scraps to a processed chicken-feed ingredient, but that path involves inspection, quality standards, regulatory limits, and no guarantee that every batch becomes feed. For a buyer today, the key question is not simply whether Mill costs $33 a month; it is whether the appliance, pickup logistics, and downstream destination justify the total cost for the household or facility.
