Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) Review: Beautiful, Capable—and Expensive

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat is a substantial redesign with a larger display, a bundled remote temperature sensor, improved HVAC support, and Matter compatibility. It is easiest to recommend to Google Home households that value appearance and room-temperature prioritization. At its $279.99 list price, however, it is a luxury upgrade rather than an obvious value—especially for owners of a reliable third-generation Nest.

Buy it if you want a premium Google Home thermostat, have noticeable hot or cold spots, or are replacing an older Nest. Buy it on sale or with a utility rebate if you mainly want a cosmetic refresh. Investigate compatibility before buying if your HVAC system is zoned, heat-pump-based, accessory-heavy, or otherwise complex.

Price and value

Google lists the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) at $279.99. Google’s Store showed a temporary price of $239.99 when this review’s research was checked; promotions change, so verify the current price on the official product page.

The thermostat includes one second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor. Your real cost may be higher if you need professional installation, a Nest Power Connector, a replacement trim plate, or additional sensors. Tom’s Guide cited approximately $435 for the thermostat and professional installation in its review context, but that is not a universal installation price. Labor varies with location, wiring, wall access, HVAC type, and service provider.

  • Nest’s smartest, most advanced thermostat yet, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is a beautiful, brilliant way to save energy, keep your home comfortable, and help make sure your heating and cooling systems are running smoothly[4]
  • Savings you can count on: The Nest Learning Thermostat can help save up to 31% on heating and cooling bills[2]
  • Improved compatibility: It works with most 24V systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced air, heat pump, and radiant, and no C wire is required for installation in most homes; visit the Nest Compatibility Checker for more info[5]
  • Easy control in the Google Home app: Adjust on your phone from anywhere[1] or by using your voice with Alexa, Siri, or Google Assistant smart speaker[3], it’s easy to install yourself and it’s Matter compatible for simple integration into your smart home[5]
  • Beautiful design: With a 60% larger display[11] and Dynamic Farsight, you can see info from across the room[1]; choose the design, like a clock or the weather; it automatically adjusts brightness for the best readability or you can adjust manually

That makes the fourth-generation model difficult to justify solely as an energy-saving purchase. It is designed to reduce energy use through scheduling, presence detection, and Eco features, but actual savings depend on your climate, insulation, HVAC efficiency, utility rates, baseline thermostat habits, and willingness to accept temperature setbacks.

A more substantial redesign than the name suggests

Released August 20, 2024, the fourth-generation Learning Thermostat is not merely a new face on the third-generation model. Google redesigned the hardware, display, installation process, sensing system, and smart-home integration.

The thermostat measures 3.9 inches in diameter and 1.1 inches deep, and weighs 5.7 ounces. Its 2.7-inch circular LCD has a 600-by-600-pixel resolution. It is available in Polished Silver, Polished Obsidian, and Polished Gold. The complete specifications are listed by Google.

Design: genuinely distinctive, not universally attractive

The fourth-generation Nest looks more like a polished decorative object than a conventional white touchscreen thermostat. Its reflective finish can make it a more attractive wall fixture in a renovated kitchen, hallway, or living area. The larger circular display is also easier to read from across a room than the smaller screen on older Nest models.

That styling is subjective. The reflective surface can be conspicuous, and the silver, black, or gold finish may clash with a room where a discreet thermostat would be preferable. You are paying for something that remains visible on the wall, so the design premium has more practical relevance than it would on an appliance hidden in a cabinet—but design alone does not lower your heating bill.

The rotating outer ring remains the best part of the physical interaction. It is more deliberate than tapping a small touchscreen: rotate to change a setting, then press to select it. The display can show temperature, weather, time, or other information through Google’s Dynamic Farsight behavior, while Soli motion sensing wakes the display as you approach. The thermostat also includes temperature, humidity, and ambient-light sensors.

A trim plate is included for covering marks or holes left by a previous thermostat. Do not assume that an existing Nest backplate can simply be reused; the fourth-generation model has redesigned mounting hardware and its own installation process.

Learning thermostats are less appealing to people who prefer a fixed, fully predictable schedule. A manual temperature change does not necessarily become a permanent instruction, and automated behavior can feel intrusive if occupants frequently work from home, keep irregular hours, or disagree about preferred temperatures. You can override the thermostat, but you should spend time reviewing the resulting schedule rather than assuming its first guesses are perfect.

Presence detection and Adaptive Eco

Presence-related behavior can reduce heating or cooling when the home appears empty. Adaptive Eco is intended to balance comfort with energy use rather than simply turning the HVAC system off. These features can be valuable in a home with changing occupancy, but they work best when the household allows the thermostat to make meaningful adjustments.

If everyone already follows a disciplined programmable schedule, rarely leaves unexpectedly, and chooses efficient set points, the improvement may be modest. Conversely, a household that routinely heats or cools an empty house may see more benefit.

System Health and environmental information

Depending on the HVAC equipment and configuration, Google Home can provide system-health information and controls related to humidity, ventilation, or air quality. Availability is not universal: it depends on the supported equipment, wiring, region, and account configuration. Treat these as useful supporting features, not a substitute for HVAC maintenance, proper ventilation design, or professional diagnosis.

The included temperature sensor is useful—but it is not zoning

The second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor is arguably the fourth-generation thermostat’s most practical upgrade. Put it in a bedroom, office, nursery, or upstairs room that is consistently warmer or colder than the thermostat location. The system can use that sensor as the priority temperature location according to a schedule.

This can improve perceived comfort in the room that matters most at a particular time. It does not create independent HVAC zones. A single central system still heats or cools according to one thermostat decision; it cannot heat one room while cooling another. If you prioritize a hot bedroom, other rooms may become less comfortable because the HVAC system continues running until the selected room reaches its target.

Placement matters. Keep the sensor away from direct sunlight, supply vents, exterior doors, windows, and heat-producing electronics. A sensor in a frequently occupied room is generally more useful than one placed simply because it is convenient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google says up to six sensors can be used per thermostat, and existing generations of Nest Temperature Sensors are compatible with the fourth-generation Learning Thermostat. More sensors can help you schedule different priority rooms, but they still do not replace ductwork changes, dampers, or a properly designed multi-zone HVAC system. See Google’s sensor troubleshooting guidance if pairing fails or readings seem wrong.

Compatibility and the C-wire question

Does it require a C wire? Not necessarily. Google says many installations work without one using power-sharing technology, but some systems and wiring configurations still require a C wire or a Nest Power Connector. The Google Home setup process performs a compatibility check and can identify power requirements.

Do not treat “C wire not required” as a guarantee. A previous Nest installation is not proof that a fourth-generation installation will be trouble-free. Power warnings, repeated shutdowns, or a thermostat that loses its charge are signs to stop troubleshooting blindly and check the wiring or consult an HVAC professional. Google’s C-wire guidance explains the relevant options.

The thermostat supports most 24-volt systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced-air, heat-pump, and radiant systems. Google’s compatibility information lists support for:

  • Up to two stages of cooling.
  • Up to three stages of heating for conventional systems.
  • Up to four heating stages for heat pumps: two heat-pump stages and two alternate-heating stages.
  • Some humidifier, dehumidifier, and ventilation equipment through the AQ terminals.
  • Zoned systems, although some zoned installations require a C wire.

Potential trouble areas include communicating or proprietary HVAC systems, dry-contact systems, dual-transformer setups, complex boilers, steam or forced-hot-water systems requiring specialized controls, systems with too many heating or cooling stages, and complicated zoning. Use Google’s official compatibility guide and compatibility checker before purchase. The number of visible wires at the wall is not enough to establish compatibility.

Installation: improved guidance, not universal simplicity

The Google Home app provides a redesigned, step-by-step installation flow. For a straightforward compatible system, a careful DIY installer may find the process manageable. Turn off HVAC power before touching wiring; thermostat wiring can damage equipment if handled incorrectly.

  1. Turn off power at the HVAC breaker or service switch.
  2. Photograph the existing thermostat wiring.
  3. Use the compatibility checker and label wires before disconnecting them.
  4. Remove the old thermostat.
  5. Install the new base, using the trim plate or steel plate if needed.
  6. Connect each wire to the terminal identified by Google Home.
  7. Attach the display and restore HVAC power.
  8. Finish setup in Google Home.
  9. Configure the system type, location, schedule, and sensor priority.
  10. Test heating, cooling, fan, and auxiliary equipment before considering the job complete.

Professional installation is prudent for heat pumps with auxiliary or emergency heat, multi-stage systems, zoned equipment, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, ventilation controls, unclear wiring, or any system that reports a power problem. Google warns that incorrect wiring or installation settings can damage the thermostat or HVAC system; its fan and compatibility help is worth reviewing before starting.

Google Home is now central to the experience

The fourth-generation Learning Thermostat must be set up in the Google Home app. It is not a Nest-app-first product. Google Home handles schedules, modes, sensors, and smart-home integration, while the thermostat itself still provides local physical control.

This is convenient if your household already uses Google Home. It is less appealing if you prefer the older Nest app or want to keep thermostat administration separate from your broader Google account. Verify current feature availability in your country and account configuration, particularly if you depend on browser control, legacy workflows, or specialized HVAC settings.

Matter support is valuable, with an important limitation

The thermostat is Matter-certified, allowing control through Google Home and compatible third-party smart-home platforms. That is a meaningful improvement for households that use more than one smart-home ecosystem.

However, Matter interoperability should not be confused with complete feature parity. Basic functions such as temperature control may be available through Apple Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or another Matter-enabled platform, but Nest-specific functions—learning behavior, sensor prioritization, energy programs, and some automations—may remain dependent on Google Home.

Setup may still require Google Home even when day-to-day commands happen elsewhere. Matter also does not guarantee that every future Google feature will appear identically in every third-party app. If your priority is full control outside Google’s ecosystem, confirm the exact functions you need rather than relying on a “works with Matter” label.

Energy savings: use a payback calculation, not a promise

The fourth-generation Nest can potentially reduce consumption through automatic setbacks, Smart Schedule, presence detection, Eco modes, weather-related adjustments, and better prioritization of a room with a temperature sensor. But the thermostat cannot overcome poor insulation, leaky ducts, inadequate HVAC sizing, blocked registers, or fundamental zoning problems.

Its savings may be limited when a household already uses an effective schedule, occupants frequently override automation, or comfort takes priority over setbacks. A responsible estimate requires your climate, fuel type, utility rates, HVAC efficiency, existing thermostat behavior, and rebate eligibility.

Use this framework:

Payback period = installed cost ÷ realistic annual energy savings

Without those inputs, no honest review can tell you that the thermostat will recover its purchase price. Check local utility rebates separately; their availability and eligibility change by location and program year.

Fourth generation versus third generation

Category Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen)
Design Larger, more reflective finishes and redesigned hardware Older, more familiar Nest design
Display 2.7-inch circular LCD, 600 × 600 pixels Smaller previous-generation display
Room sensing Includes one second-generation sensor; supports up to six Requires compatible sensors purchased separately
App Google Home required for setup and control Older Nest workflow remains familiar to many owners
Smart home Matter-certified No equivalent fourth-generation Matter capability
HVAC support Expanded compatibility, subject to official checker Different compatibility limits
Upgrade value Best for design, sensing, Matter, and replacement needs Still adequate if working and meeting your needs

A functioning third-generation Nest still performs the core job well. Upgrade when you specifically want the larger display, bundled sensor, Matter support, newer HVAC compatibility, or replacement hardware. Do not upgrade merely because a new generation exists.

First- and second-generation Learning Thermostat owners have a stronger reason to move on: Google ended support for those models on October 25, 2025. Google said eligible users in the U.S. and Canada were offered account-specific replacement pricing, including $149.99 in the U.S. and CA$219.99 in Canada. Those offers should not be assumed to be universally available now; check Google’s support page.

Who should buy it?

Buy it if:

  • You want the most polished-looking thermostat in the Google Home ecosystem.
  • Your home has meaningful hot or cold spots and one priority-room sensor would help.
  • You want a bundled sensor, Google Home automation, and Matter interoperability.
  • You are replacing an unsupported or failing older Nest.
  • You can buy it on sale, use a rebate, or value the design enough to accept the premium.

Buy only on sale or with a rebate if:

  • You already own a reliable third-generation Nest.
  • You mainly want a cosmetic change.
  • You do not need room sensing or Matter.
  • A less expensive thermostat already provides the scheduling and app control you use.

Investigate first or skip it if:

  • Your system is communicating, proprietary, dry-contact, unusually complex, or heavily zoned.
  • You depend on humidifier, dehumidifier, or ventilation controls.
  • Your wiring is unclear or the compatibility checker reports a power issue.
  • You dislike Google Home account dependence or require every advanced feature in Apple Home, Alexa, or another platform.
  • You expect the included sensor to provide true room-by-room heating and cooling.
  • You live outside the U.S. or Canada and have not confirmed official sale and support for your location.

Common problems to plan for

A display that stays dark after installation usually points to power, wiring, or an HVAC service-switch issue; follow Google’s fourth-generation thermostat troubleshooting rather than repeatedly cycling wires with power on.

If heating runs when cooling is expected, the fan behaves incorrectly, auxiliary heat fails, or accessory controls are unavailable, stop and recheck the system type and terminal mapping in Google Home. Those symptoms can indicate incorrect configuration or unsupported equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a sensor will not pair, check Bluetooth, move the sensor closer to the thermostat, and retry setup as Google recommends. A sensor that reports an implausible temperature may be poorly placed rather than defective. Finally, if Google Home setup is blocked by Wi-Fi or account problems, local thermostat controls will not substitute for completing the required app setup.

Final recommendation

The fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat is a beautiful and capable premium thermostat, but its price is doing real work. The strongest reasons to buy are the larger, more attractive display, included room sensor, Google Home integration, expanded compatibility, and Matter support—not a guaranteed reduction in utility bills.

For a new buyer in the Google ecosystem, especially one dealing with uneven room temperatures, it is a strong choice if the HVAC compatibility check passes. For a satisfied third-generation Nest owner, it is primarily a luxury upgrade and makes more sense on sale or with a rebate. For complex HVAC systems, cross-platform households seeking complete feature parity, or budget-focused buyers, investigate alternatives before committing.

Compare the Nest with options such as the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, the lower-cost ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential, and Honeywell Home smart thermostats based on current price, sensor behavior, HVAC compatibility, app experience, and ecosystem preference.
