“Neon plants” are plants with vivid, attention-grabbing leaves—not a botanical group, and not plants that glow in the dark. A glow garden can create that luminous look with bright foliage colors, contrasting patterns, and thoughtful placement.
What makes a plant look “neon”?
Bright foliage gets its color from pigments and patterns. The Royal Horticultural Society explains that chlorophyll gives leaves their green color, while carotenoids and anthocyanins contribute red, orange, and purple tones. Variegation describes streaks, blotches, or patches of different colors. These effects can look striking, but they are not light emission. The RHS guide to foliage plants explains these color effects.
Which colorful plants suit a glow garden?
Coleus: versatile color for beds and containers
Coleus foliage comes in green, yellow, pink, red, and maroon. It grows in garden beds or containers and can be started from seed or cuttings. Cultivars differ in light tolerance: some handle full sun, while others are better suited to shade, so check the guidance for the variety you choose. University of Minnesota Extension’s coleus guide covers growing options and cultivar differences.
Caladium: vivid leaves for shade
Caladium has heart- or arrow-shaped leaves marked with pink, red, white, and green speckles, streaks, or splashes. It suits partial to full shade; harsh afternoon sun can scorch its thin leaves. Keep the growing medium moist but well-drained. Penn State Extension notes that “Their colorful, heart-shaped foliage can stand alone or blend with other plants that thrive in tropical conditions.” Read Penn State Extension’s caladium guide.

Polka dot plant: splashes of pink, red, or white
Hypoestes, commonly called polka dot plant, has leaves splashed with red, pink, or white. Give it bright indirect light and moderate to high humidity. In too little light, its color may fade or the foliage may revert toward green. See the RHS growing guide for Hypoestes.

Croton: color for a brighter indoor position
Croton brings colorful foliage to a bright indoor spot, where bright indirect light helps maintain leaf color. Intense sun can scorch its leaves; insufficient light can fade color and lead to leggy growth. The RHS croton growing guide describes its light needs.

How to choose plants for your space
Start with the conditions you can provide, then choose the color and pattern you want. Group plants with similar care needs rather than choosing by leaf color alone.
| Plant | Best-fit conditions | Foliage effect |
|---|---|---|
| Coleus | Beds or containers; light tolerance depends on cultivar | Green, yellow, pink, red, or maroon leaves |
| Caladium | Partial to full shade; moist, well-drained growing medium | Heart- or arrow-shaped leaves with colorful markings |
| Fittonia | Bright light out of direct sun; humid air | Compact leaves with contrasting veins |
| Hypoestes | Bright indirect light; moderate to high humidity | Leaves splashed with red, pink, or white |
| Calathea / Goeppertia | Warm, humid conditions; bright indirect light | Bold color variations, stripes, or intricate patterns |
| Croton | Bright indirect light indoors; protect from intense sun | Colorful foliage |
For an outdoor shade display, caladium is a strong choice; coleus gives you more cultivar variety, but its sun or shade suitability depends on the selection. In a bright indoor room, fittonia and hypoestes offer compact patterned leaves, while calathea adds larger, intricately marked foliage. Croton is a better match for a brighter position with protection from harsh direct sun.

How to arrange a glow garden
- Match the plants to the light. Place shade-loving caladium where afternoon sun will not scorch it. Check the light guidance for your coleus cultivar, and reserve bright indirect positions for tropical houseplants.
- Group plants with similar care needs. Keep humidity-loving plants together where you can provide humid air, and avoid combining them with plants that need a different routine.
- Build contrast. Set red or pink leaves against green foliage, place pale patterned leaves beside darker ones, and vary leaf shapes to create visual layers.
- Choose a display scale. Use containers for a moveable indoor or patio arrangement, or combine plants in beds where their light and moisture needs match.
If you want to start a colorful container display from seed, coleus is one option: University of Minnesota Extension explains that coleus can be started from seed or cuttings.
