The most reliable natural way to get rid of insects is not a single spray, oil, or household ingredient. It is an integrated pest-management (IPM) plan: identify the insect, remove its food and water, block entry points, eliminate shelter, monitor activity, and use targeted physical controls only when they are appropriate. This approach is usually safer and more effective than treating every insect the same way.

“Natural” does not automatically mean harmless, chemical-free, or effective against every pest. Even products marketed as minimum-risk pesticides contain active ingredients and must be used under their label conditions. The EPA’s IPM guidance puts prevention and accurate identification ahead of treatment.

Why prevention works better than spraying

Indoor insects remain indoors because the home supplies something they need: food, moisture, warmth, shelter, or a route inside. Killing the insects you can see may provide temporary relief, but it does not solve the source. A durable solution changes the conditions that support the infestation.

Use this order:

  1. Identify the insect and locate where activity is concentrated.
  2. Remove food and water that support it.
  3. Exclude it by sealing cracks, repairing screens, and closing gaps.
  4. Remove shelter such as clutter, damp debris, and vegetation touching the structure.
  5. Monitor with inspection, vacuuming, and pest-appropriate traps.
  6. Escalate carefully to heat, cold, bait, a labeled pesticide, or professional help when monitoring shows it is necessary.

This is the basic IPM sequence described by the EPA’s integrated pest-management principles. Physical and preventive controls are often the strongest “natural” methods because they address the building and the pest’s life cycle rather than merely repelling a few adults.

  • Traps and kills spiders, ants, cockroaches, crickets and other crawling insects
  • Kills Brown Recluse, Black Widow and Hobo Spiders
  • Non-toxic and pesticide-free

Step 1: Identify the insect before treating it

Different insects require different solutions. Ants may be following a food trail from an outdoor nest. Pantry beetles may be emerging from a bag of flour. Mosquitoes may be entering through a torn screen or developing in standing water. Bed bugs require a coordinated plan and are not reliably diagnosed from bites alone.

Before choosing a remedy, record:

  • Where the insects appear: kitchen, bathroom, basement, bedroom, windows, drains, pantry, or exterior walls.
  • When they are active: daytime, nighttime, after rain, after food preparation, or when lights are on.
  • What they are near: food, pet bowls, plumbing, houseplants, garbage, damp wood, windows, or doors.
  • Whether there are signs such as webbing, frass, shed skins, droppings, holes in packaging, larvae, eggs, or damaged wood.
  • Whether activity is isolated or occurring in several rooms or units.

Do not diagnose bed bugs from bites alone. The EPA’s bed bug detection guidance explains that bite marks are not a reliable indication of an infestation. Look for the insects, cast skins, eggs, dark spotting, or other physical evidence around mattress seams, bed frames, and nearby furniture.

Step 2: Remove food sources

Food sanitation is one of the highest-value controls for ants, cockroaches, flies, pantry pests, and rodents. Clean crumbs and spills promptly, rinse recyclable containers, empty garbage regularly, and avoid leaving pet food or water out overnight. Store dry goods and pet food in hard containers with tight-fitting lids rather than relying on thin bags or cardboard boxes.

For a food-related infestation, inspect more than the shelf where you first saw insects. Check flour, cereal, grains, oats, pasta, rice, dried fruit, spices, birdseed, pet food, and other dry goods. Look for webbing, clumping, larvae, holes, or adult insects. Finding pests in one area does not prove that the source is nearby, so inspect the entire pantry. Penn State Extension’s urban-pest guidance recommends discarding infested products, vacuuming cracks and shelf corners, cleaning the pantry, and transferring unaffected foods to sealed containers.

Sealed containers prevent reinfestation but do not repair an existing infestation. Discard contaminated food first, clean the storage area, and then use airtight pantry containers for replacement food, flour, cereal, and pet supplies. Choose rigid containers with tight-fitting lids; inspect new packages before storing them.

Step 3: Remove moisture and standing water

Leaking plumbing, condensation, damp storage areas, and standing water create favorable conditions for mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, flies, and other pests. Repair dripping faucets and supply lines, correct leaks under sinks, improve ventilation in bathrooms and basements, and dry wet areas rather than masking them with fragrance or repellent.

For mosquitoes, inspect both the home and the surrounding property. At least once a week, CDC guidance recommends emptying, scrubbing, turning over, covering, or discarding water-holding items. Check buckets, toys, planters, saucers, gutters, tarps, pet bowls, wheelbarrows, and unused equipment. Cover water-storage containers securely. Containers that cannot be covered can be protected with wire mesh whose openings are smaller than an adult mosquito.

A metal drain screen may help keep some insects out, but it is not a substitute for cleaning a drain or repairing a plumbing problem. If flies continue to emerge from a drain, garbage disposal, floor drain, or other moist organic area, investigate and clean the breeding site rather than relying on a trap alone.

Step 4: Seal entry points and reduce shelter

For many homes, the most effective natural pest control is building maintenance. Inspect the exterior and interior perimeter, especially:

  • Window and door frames
  • Foundation joints and siding transitions
  • Utility penetrations and plumbing pipes
  • Vents, soffits, crawl-space openings, and attic access
  • Cabinet backs and gaps around appliances
  • Garage doors and thresholds
  • Cracks where walls meet floors or ceilings

Use caulk for small stationary cracks. Install weather stripping or a door sweep where light or air passes beneath an exterior door. Repair torn screens and close garage doors when they are not in use. For larger openings, use a material suited to the pest and location, such as metal mesh, hardware cloth, cement, or sheet metal.

  • Can be used as flat or folded and placed where rodent or other target pests activities have been observed.
  • Includes 12 peanut butter scented glue boards
  • Boards are scented

Rodent gaps require especially durable repairs. The CDC recommends steel wool secured with caulk or spray foam for small rodent openings, and metal or cement materials for larger holes. The same exclusion principle helps with crawling insects, but do not assume one material is suitable for every opening: heat, moisture, movement, fire-rating requirements, and the pest itself matter.

Repairing screens is particularly valuable where flying insects enter through windows. A window screen repair kit can address small tears and loose edges; replace badly damaged screens rather than patching every opening. Good screens do not eliminate mosquitoes breeding outdoors, but they reduce indoor access when combined with closed doors and standing-water control.

For doors, a door sweep and weather stripping can close the gap beneath and around an exterior door. Check the seal after installation by looking for daylight and feeling for drafts. In older homes, sealing these gaps can improve both insect exclusion and weatherization, but preserve required ventilation openings and do not block combustion-air or mechanical-ventilation pathways.

Reduce outdoor shelter as well. Prune vegetation that touches the building, move firewood and brush away from the structure, remove unnecessary debris, and reduce clutter in basements, garages, crawl spaces, and utility rooms. These changes make inspection easier and remove hiding places used by ants, fleas, cockroaches, and other pests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Use physical removal and monitoring

Vacuum visible insects, webs, egg clusters, shed skins, and debris. Empty the vacuum promptly and dispose of contents in a sealed bag when dealing with a persistent infestation. Use extra care with material that may contain rodent droppings or other contamination; do not stir contaminated dust into the air.

Monitoring tells you whether prevention is working and where activity remains. Place monitors near suspected routes, food-storage areas, appliances, doors, or other locations appropriate to the pest. Indoor sticky insect traps can help monitor or reduce some spiders, cockroaches, and other insects, but they are not a universal solution. In particular, the EPA states that sticky traps are not a bed bug treatment.

Check monitors on a schedule and record what they catch. A declining count suggests that exclusion and sanitation are working; continued activity in the same place points to an overlooked food source, water source, entry gap, nest, or breeding site.

Pest-specific natural and low-chemical approaches

Ants

Begin by wiping up food residue, storing food securely, following the trail, and sealing the crack or gap where ants enter. A mild vinegar-and-water solution may temporarily disrupt an ant pheromone trail on a washable surface, but it does not eliminate the nest or act as a universal insecticide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If ants continue foraging indoors, a species-appropriate bait can be more effective than killing individual workers. Workers carry bait back to the colony, so avoid spraying repellent insecticide over the trail or contaminating a bait station. Baits can take weeks or even months, and different ant species prefer different foods. Keep bait inaccessible to children and pets and follow its label.

Large numbers of winged ants, recurring carpenter-ant activity, sawdust-like frass, or ants associated with damp or damaged wood warrant further evaluation. Carpenter ants do not create moisture problems, but they often exploit wood that is already wet or compromised; correcting the moisture source is part of the control plan.

Fruit flies and house flies

For fruit flies, remove overripe produce, clean spills, empty garbage, wash recycling, and inspect drains, garbage disposals, mop heads, and other moist organic areas. A simple trap may catch adult fruit flies and help confirm activity, but it will not eliminate the breeding site.

Cleanuper 58 Pack Yellow Sticky Gnat Traps for Plants - Fungus Gnat Killer, Fruit Fly Traps for Indoors, Gnat Sticky Traps for Plants, Family Friendly Design, Sunflower + Butterfly Shapes
  • [Catches Gnats, Fruit Flies, Whiteflies And More] Yellow sticky traps with top-grade adhesive grab fungus gnats, aphids, fruit flies, thrips, and whiteflies on contact from both faces. Place each card at soil level near drainage holes for fastest results. Works for indoor plants and outdoor gardens.
  • [Decorative Shapes That Stay In Your Pots Year-Round] Yellow sunflower and butterfly designs look intentional in any plant display rather than calling out a pest problem. The yellow color attracts insects and decorates at the same time. Leave one trap per pot as a permanent monitoring layer; if a new infestation starts, you will spot insects on the surface before your plants show damage. Two options offer flexibility across pot sizes and styles.
  • [Peels Clean Without Tearing] Start at the bottom and slowly peel one protective film at a time to cleanly reveal the adhesive face. The thicker rigid plastic stake and trap keep the card flat and straight throughout setup so you do not wrestle a floppy surface. No glue on hands, tearing, accidental folding before insertion, or hassle. Three steps: peel, hold, push into soil.
  • [Family Friendly Design & Odorless] The family friendly physical adhesive trap is odorless and leaves no residue on surfaces near your plants. Keep out of direct reach to avoid hair or skin contact with the glue surface.
  • [Works Indoors, Outdoors And In Hanging Baskets] UV-resistant construction holds up under direct sunlight without degrading the adhesive. The pointed plastic stake inserts directly into soil; use the included wire to hang traps near hanging baskets, window herb gardens, or bare-root seedling trays where no soil is available. Two deployment modes, one pack.

Persistent house flies require source-finding. Check garbage storage, compost, pet waste, dead animals, dumpsters, manure, and other organic material near the home. Screens, closed doors, sanitation, and source removal are more dependable than an indoor device used by itself. If flies repeatedly appear despite cleaning, investigate wall voids, attic areas, vents, and inaccessible organic sources.

Pantry moths, beetles, and other stored-food pests

  1. Discard visibly infested food in a sealed bag.
  2. Inspect adjacent packages and unopened products, including pet food and birdseed.
  3. Vacuum shelf joints, cracks, corners, and cabinet holes.
  4. Wash the storage area and allow it to dry fully.
  5. Move unaffected food into airtight, rigid containers.
  6. Continue inspecting because adults may appear after the original source is removed.

Do not assume that killing flying adult moths solves the problem. The larvae and infested package are usually the more important targets. Freezing or heat may be appropriate for some food items, but use a method suitable for the product and do not rely on an improvised treatment that could spoil food or create a fire hazard.

Mosquitoes

Focus first on outdoor standing water and indoor entry. Empty or scrub water-holding items weekly, cover containers, repair screens, close doors, and use air conditioning where available. Reduce damp, shaded areas around the building and correct drainage problems that leave puddles.

Larvicides and adulticides are pesticide treatments, not automatically “natural” solutions. If you use one, confirm that it is labeled for the specific site and pest, follow the directions, and keep people, pets, food, and water sources protected as instructed. Do not apply a product indoors simply because it is sold for outdoor mosquito control.

Fleas

Flea control must include the animal, the home, and likely outdoor sources. Have pets treated through a veterinarian or with an appropriately labeled product. Wash pet bedding, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture regularly, and dispose of vacuum contents promptly. Secure pet food, remove brush and clutter, and reduce shaded, humid areas where fleas may develop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wildlife and stray animals can reintroduce fleas. The CDC recommends year-round flea prevention for pets and attention to bedding and the surrounding environment. A vet-recommended flea prevention plan is often more reliable than attempting to treat the animal and house with an unverified essential-oil mixture. Never apply a dog product to a cat unless the label specifically permits it.

Bed bugs

Bed bugs are not a good candidate for casual essential-oil remedies, vinegar, or a single “natural” product. They hide in seams, cracks, bed frames, furniture, and nearby clutter, and missed individuals can restart an infestation. Use a coordinated IPM plan and expect repeated inspection.

Nonchemical measures supported by the EPA’s bed bug IPM guidance include:

  • Dry bedding, clothing, and suitable washable articles on high heat for 30 minutes. Washing alone generally does not kill all bed bugs.
  • Use heat treatment for suitable articles or professional whole-room treatment. Whole-room heat must reach at least 120°F (49°C) for 90 minutes to ensure eggs are killed.
  • Install properly fitted mattress and box-spring encasements and inspect them regularly.
  • Place interceptors under furniture legs to monitor and reduce movement.
  • Vacuum mattress seams, bed frames, baseboards, cracks, and nearby furniture, then dispose of the contents safely.
  • Reduce clutter so inspection and treatment are possible.
  • Repeat inspections because eggs and hidden insects may remain after the first cleanup.

Do not attempt to heat a room with space heaters, fireplaces, hair dryers, or a thermostat. DIY whole-room heating is dangerous and may fail to reach lethal temperatures throughout mattresses, walls, and furniture.

Never use rubbing alcohol, kerosene, or gasoline for bed bugs. They can poison occupants and ignite. Do not spread pool-grade or food-grade diatomaceous earth as a substitute for a registered pesticide. If you choose bed bug mattress encasements and interceptors, treat them as monitoring and containment tools within a broader plan, not as a guarantee that an infestation is eradicated.

What about essential oils, vinegar, and diatomaceous earth?

Essential oils

Peppermint, citronella, cedar, eucalyptus, lavender, lemongrass, and rosemary oils may show repellent activity in some situations. That does not make them dependable whole-home insect controls. Extension guidance notes that many plant-derived repellents have not demonstrated the broad, substantial effectiveness of established repellents and may provide less than two hours of protection.

Essential oils can also irritate skin and airways, stain surfaces, harm some pets, or create problems when concentrated. Never assume that an oil is safe to apply to bedding, pets, food-contact surfaces, or a child’s room. Use only a product whose label permits the intended application.

Vinegar

Vinegar is useful for cleaning some surfaces and may temporarily disrupt ant trails. It is not a universal insecticide, and a household ingredient is not automatically approved for every pest-control claim or use. The University of Minnesota Extension’s ant guidance supports trail disruption as a temporary measure while emphasizing sanitation, exclusion, and appropriate baiting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diatomaceous earth

Diatomaceous earth works as a desiccant: it can damage an insect’s outer body and absorb oils, causing the insect to dry out. Its effectiveness depends on correct placement, dryness, contact with the insect, and the target species. Applying piles of dust throughout a home can create an airborne-dust exposure problem.

The National Pesticide Information Center explains that food-grade diatomaceous earth is not evaluated for pest-control risks and does not provide pest-control directions or precautions. If a desiccant is appropriate, select an EPA-registered desiccant insecticide labeled for the intended pest and location, apply the smallest effective amount, minimize airborne dust, and keep children and pets away as directed. “Food grade” is not a substitute for a pest-control label, and pool-grade material should not be used for indoor pest control.

Label and safety rules for “natural” products

Read the product label before using any pesticide, bait, desiccant, oil blend, or insect repellent. The label determines where it may be used, which pest it controls, how much to apply, how to ventilate, and what precautions are required. Do not mix products unless the label specifically allows it.

Be skeptical of absolute claims such as “chemical-free,” “kills all insects,” or “repels all insects.” The EPA’s conditions for minimum-risk pesticides make clear that products in this category still contain active ingredients and must satisfy specific conditions. A low-toxicity claim does not remove the need for identification, ventilation, storage, or label compliance.

A practical home insect-control checklist

  1. Photograph or collect evidence of the insect without spreading it.
  2. Inspect food, plumbing, windows, doors, vents, baseboards, appliances, and exterior walls.
  3. Discard infested food and clean the surrounding storage area.
  4. Repair leaks, dry damp areas, and remove standing water at least weekly.
  5. Seal small cracks with suitable caulk and close door and window gaps.
  6. Repair screens and install door sweeps where appropriate.
  7. Remove clutter, damp debris, brush, and vegetation touching the structure.
  8. Vacuum visible insects and debris; dispose of contents appropriately.
  9. Use pest-appropriate monitors and check them consistently.
  10. Choose a targeted, labeled control only if activity continues, and reassess rather than repeatedly applying treatments.

When to call a professional

DIY prevention is sensible for a few occasional insects, but professional assessment is the better choice when the pest may damage the structure, involves contamination or disease risk, is difficult to identify, persists after prevention, or is spreading through a multi-unit building.

Escalate promptly for termites and other wood-destroying insects, recurring cockroach infestations, bed bugs, inaccessible nests, large mosquito problems, or infestations affecting infants, older adults, people with respiratory conditions, or immunocompromised occupants. In apartments and condominiums, notify management because treating only one unit may not address movement through adjoining walls, plumbing, or utility spaces.

Ask a provider to explain the pest identification, source, exclusion work, monitoring plan, treatment options, reinspection schedule, and occupant precautions. A professional IPM pest control service is most useful when it investigates the cause and combines exclusion and sanitation with targeted treatment instead of defaulting to repeated broad spraying.

If you rent, live in an older home, or cannot safely repair gaps and screens yourself, a home insect-proofing service or screen-repair professional can handle sealing, door gaps, and building-envelope repairs. Those improvements can reduce both pest entry and unwanted drafts, but they should not conceal required vents or create moisture problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest natural way to get rid of insects in a house?

For a small, visible problem, remove the insects with a vacuum, clean the food or moisture source, and seal the entry point. The fastest durable solution depends on the insect: pantry pests require discarding infested food, mosquitoes require standing-water and screen control, and bed bugs require coordinated IPM rather than a single household remedy.

Does vinegar kill household insects?

Vinegar can clean surfaces and temporarily disrupt ant trails, but it is not a universal insecticide. It will not reliably eliminate nests, breeding sites, pantry infestations, mosquitoes, fleas, or bed bugs.

Are essential oils safe and effective for insects?

Some essential oils repel insects briefly in certain circumstances, but many provide limited protection and are not dependable whole-home treatments. Concentrated oils can irritate people, damage surfaces, or harm pets, so use them only according to the product label.

Can I use food-grade diatomaceous earth for bed bugs?

No. Food-grade diatomaceous earth is not evaluated for pest-control risks or labeled with pest-control directions. If a desiccant is appropriate, use only a registered pesticide labeled for the specific pest and location, minimize dust, and follow all safety instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I call an exterminator?

Call a qualified pest professional for bed bugs, termites or other wood-destroying insects, recurring cockroaches, inaccessible nests, persistent infestations, major mosquito problems, contamination concerns, or situations involving vulnerable occupants or multiple housing units.

The Bottom Line

The best natural insect control is usually a combination of identification, sanitation, moisture repair, exclusion, clutter reduction, and pest-specific monitoring. Use oils and household ingredients cautiously, never treat “natural” as synonymous with harmless, and bring in a professional when the pest is persistent, structural, difficult to identify, or unsafe to manage casually.
