Natural Spider Control That Actually Works: A Builder’s Guide to Keeping Spiders Out

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To get rid of spiders from your home naturally, start with the structure, not the spray bottle. Spiders usually show up because a house is giving them three things: insects to eat, small openings to enter through, and quiet, undisturbed places to build webs. A natural plan that works has to remove all three.

On our job sites, we treat spider problems the same way we treat water, air, and pests in general: find the pathway, correct the condition, and then maintain it. A vinegar or peppermint spray may discourage spiders for a few days, but it will not seal a gap under a door, remove an egg sac behind storage boxes, or stop insects from swarming around a porch light every night.

The practical approach is simple: vacuum webs and egg sacs, reduce clutter, manage moisture, repair screens and door sweeps, seal cracks and utility penetrations, adjust outdoor lighting, and then use low-toxicity natural deterrents as a final layer. Most homeowners can make a noticeable difference in one weekend and a strong difference in 7 days.

The 7-Day Natural Spider Reset

If you want a clear starting point, use this 7-day reset. It is designed for a typical single-family home, garage, basement, attic, or crawl-space edge. You can compress it into a weekend, but spreading it over a week keeps the work manageable.

Pre-mixed and easy to use—just spray and go for natural protection wherever it’s needed most.

Day 1: Vacuum Webs, Spiders, and Egg Sacs

Use a vacuum with a hose attachment and hit corners, ceiling lines, closets, under furniture, behind curtains, basement joists, garage corners, porch ceilings, soffits, and around exterior doors. The most important target is the egg sac. Removing one egg sac can prevent dozens or hundreds of spiderlings from appearing later.

Empty the vacuum outdoors into a sealed trash bag when you are done. If your vacuum uses a disposable bag, remove it right away. Wear gloves when working in garages, crawl spaces, sheds, or around stored boxes.

Day 2: Declutter the Places Spiders Prefer

Spiders like still, dark, low-traffic areas. Cardboard boxes in a basement or garage are especially attractive because they hold dust, moisture, and insects. Replace cardboard storage with lidded plastic bins where possible. Keep bins on shelves or pallets instead of directly on a basement or garage floor.

Focus on closets, attics, basements, crawl-space access areas, garages, utility rooms, under stairs, and behind furniture. You do not need a showroom-perfect house. You need fewer undisturbed hiding places and easier access for cleaning.

Day 3: Inspect and Seal Obvious Gaps

Use the 1/16-inch rule: if you can see a small crack, a credit-card edge can slip into it, or daylight shows around a joint, insects and spiders may be able to use it. Check around foundation cracks, sill plates, siding transitions, window trim, door frames, hose bibs, electrical penetrations, cable lines, dryer vents, gas lines, and gaps where decks or porches meet the house.

For small stationary cracks, use exterior-grade acrylic latex or polyurethane sealant. For wider gaps around pipes or utility penetrations, use copper mesh or stainless pest-blocking mesh packed into the opening, then seal around it with appropriate exterior sealant. Do not spray foam carelessly around mechanical equipment, combustion air openings, or drainage paths.

Day 4: Repair Screens and Door Sweeps

A torn window screen or loose door sweep can undo a lot of good housekeeping. Patch small screen holes with a $5 to $20 repair kit. Replace badly stretched or brittle screens instead of patching them repeatedly.

At exterior doors, the sweep should make consistent contact with the threshold without dragging so hard the door will not close. A replacement door sweep usually costs $10 to $40. Check the latch side, hinge side, and top weatherstripping too. If you can see daylight, you have an insect pathway.

Day 5: Move Debris, Firewood, and Vegetation Away From the Foundation

Spiders often build up outside first, then drift indoors. Move firewood, lumber, buckets, tarps, bins, leaves, and unused materials away from the foundation. Where space allows, 10 to 20 feet is a practical target for firewood and stored materials. Keep it elevated on a rack so the bottom row is not sitting in damp soil.

Trim shrubs and groundcover so they do not press against siding, windows, vents, or porch framing. Leave enough room to inspect and maintain the exterior wall. A dense planting bed tight to the house traps moisture and gives insects and spiders protected travel lanes.

Day 6: Change the Lighting Pattern

Spiders follow insects, and insects gather around certain lights. At dusk, walk the outside of your home with a flashlight. Look for insects around porch lights, garage lights, soffit lights, and windows where interior light shines through.

Use motion sensors where practical. Turn off unnecessary exterior lights overnight. Close blinds after dark. Consider yellow, amber, or sodium-vapor-style bulbs where security and visibility still allow. The goal is not darkness at all costs; it is fewer insects collecting at the exact places spiders can enter.

Day 7: Apply a Mild Natural Deterrent at Cleaned Entry Points

After cleaning and sealing, you can use a mild deterrent around entry points as a maintenance layer. A common option is a vinegar-water spray on non-sensitive hard surfaces. Some homeowners use peppermint, cedar, mint, citronella, lemongrass, or citrus-based products.

Treat these as short-lived. Scent fades, rain washes products away, and sunlight breaks them down. Test a small area first, keep sprays away from children, pets, aquariums, food surfaces, natural stone, unfinished wood, and delicate finishes, and follow the product label. Natural does not automatically mean harmless.

Why Spiders Are In Your House in the First Place

Spiders are predators. If you are seeing them regularly indoors, the house may also be supporting flies, moths, beetles, ants, crickets, silverfish, mosquitoes, or other small insects. The spider is often the visible symptom, not the root cause.

The biggest drivers are insects, moisture, gaps, exterior lighting, and storage conditions. A damp basement attracts prey insects. A porch light pulls insects to the door. A loose sweep gives them a path in. A quiet storage room gives spiders a place to stay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is why the best natural spider control looks a lot like good building maintenance. A tight envelope, dry crawl space, repaired screens, managed lighting, and clean storage areas do more than any single home remedy.

The Builder’s Exclusion Checklist

When our crews inspect a house for pest entry points, we do not look for one magic hole. We work by building component. Spiders and insects use small defects in combination: a light gap under the garage door, a torn screen, an unsealed cable penetration, and a damp storage corner together can create a persistent problem.

Roofline and Soffits

Look for webs around soffit vents, porch ceilings, fascia returns, gutter corners, and roof-to-wall transitions. Make sure vent screens are intact and not painted shut, torn, or missing. Do not block soffit ventilation with caulk, foam, insulation, or improvised mesh. Ventilation openings exist for a reason, and restricting them can create attic moisture and heat problems.

Siding and Trim Penetrations

Inspect hose bibs, exterior outlets, light fixtures, cable entries, gas lines, condensate lines, and siding butt joints. Use exterior-rated sealant where materials meet and leave designed drainage gaps alone. If trim is rotten or siding is soft, sealant is only a temporary patch. Damaged material may need repair or replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows

Check screens, sash locks, weep holes, exterior casing, and gaps between trim and siding. Screens should fit tightly in the track. Weep holes should remain open for drainage; do not caulk them shut. If a window has recurring condensation or soft trim, solve the moisture issue before treating it as a simple spider problem.

Doors

Exterior doors are one of the most common entry points. Look for daylight under the slab, loose thresholds, cracked weatherstripping, and gaps at the top corners. Door sweeps typically cost $10 to $40, and weatherstripping often runs $8 to $30. These are low-cost fixes with a strong return because they also help with drafts.

Foundation and Sill Plate

Walk the foundation slowly. Check cracks, pipe penetrations, vents, crawl-space doors, basement windows, and the joint where the framed wall meets the foundation. Seal small cracks with compatible masonry or exterior sealant. Larger foundation cracks, water entry, or structural movement should be evaluated before you cover them.

Garage

Garages are spider-friendly because they combine clutter, insects, gaps, and outdoor exposure. Check the garage door bottom seal, side seals, corners, service door, attic access, and storage walls. If light shows under the overhead door, insects can get in. Store shoes, gloves, sports gear, and seasonal decorations in sealed bins.

Crawl Space and Basement

Use a hygrometer. If relative humidity stays above roughly 50% to 60%, investigate drainage, leaks, missing vapor barrier, open soil, blocked vents, or poor air movement. Many prey insects prefer damp conditions, and spiders follow them.

Do not casually close, block, or alter crawl-space vents without understanding the design of the space. Ventilation, vapor barriers, combustion air, drainage, and local code requirements all matter. In some homes, crawl-space improvements are straightforward. In others, especially homes with gas appliances, older foundations, or chronic moisture, the wrong change can create a safety or mold problem.

Utilities and Mechanical Openings

Dryer vents, bath fan terminations, utility chases, refrigerant lines, electrical meters, and plumbing penetrations deserve close attention. Use proper vent covers and pest-resistant screens sized for the application. Do not reduce airflow on dryer vents, combustion appliances, bath fans, or kitchen exhaust systems.

Landscaping

Keep mulch, leaves, vines, and dense shrubs from becoming a damp bridge to the siding. Maintain a visible inspection strip around the foundation where possible. Keep firewood, lumber, and spare pavers elevated and away from the wall. Clean up leaf piles, stacked pots, tarps, and unused materials before they become insect habitat.

Natural Repellents: What They Can and Cannot Do

Natural repellents can help as a maintenance step, but they are not the foundation of the plan. Peppermint, cedar, citrus, citronella, lemongrass, vinegar-water, and similar products may repel some spiders temporarily or affect insects on contact, depending on the product and concentration. They do not remove hidden egg sacs, fix a torn screen, dry out a crawl space, or eliminate the insect population that is feeding the spiders.

If you use an essential-oil product, read the label and respect the surface. Oils can stain porous materials, damage finishes, irritate skin or lungs, and create concerns around cats, dogs, children, aquariums, and sensitive occupants. Keep products off food-prep surfaces. Do not spray bedding, toys, pet areas, or HVAC filters.

EPA minimum-risk pesticide rules allow certain ingredients, including oils such as cedar, citronella, lemongrass, mint, and others, in products that meet specific requirements. That does not mean every natural product is equally safe or effective. The label still matters.

A Practical Natural Spray Routine

For cleaned, non-sensitive hard surfaces, homeowners sometimes use a simple vinegar-water spray or a labeled minimum-risk product around thresholds, window trim, garage corners, and exterior entry points. Apply only after webs and dust are removed. Reapply after rain, cleaning, or every few days to weekly during heavy spider activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not spray spiders blindly into cracks if you have not sealed the opening. That can push pests deeper into the structure and does nothing to improve the building. Clean, seal, dry, and then treat lightly if needed.

Moisture Control Matters More Than Most Homeowners Think

Basements, crawl spaces, garages, and lower-level storage rooms are common spider hotspots because they are quiet and often damp. Moisture supports insects. Insects support spiders.

Start with measurement. A basic hygrometer usually costs $10 to $25. Place one in the basement or crawl-space access area and check it over several days. If indoor relative humidity is consistently above about 50% to 60%, look for the cause. A dehumidifier may cost $150 to $350, but it should not be used to ignore bulk water problems.

Check for plumbing leaks, sweating pipes, disconnected downspouts, negative grading, clogged gutters, wet insulation, missing vapor barriers, standing water, and open soil in crawl spaces. If the crawl space smells musty or shows condensation on framing, ducts, or pipes, you are dealing with a building condition, not just a spider issue.

What Natural Spider Control Costs in 2026

A small DIY natural spider-control project is usually inexpensive. Most homeowners spend about $15 to $75 if the work is limited to cleaning, caulking a few gaps, patching a screen, adding a door sweep, and using a mild deterrent. The cost rises when moisture, damaged trim, multiple screens, or crawl-space repairs are involved.

Item or Service Typical 2026 Cost Best Use
Exterior caulk or sealant $4-$12 per tube Small cracks at trim, siding joints, and penetrations
Weatherstripping $8-$30 Door jamb gaps and air leaks
Door sweep $10-$40 Daylight gaps under exterior doors
Screen patch kit $5-$20 Small tears in window or vent screens
Spray bottle, vinegar, or natural oil $6-$30 total Short-term deterrent after cleaning and sealing
Sticky traps $5-$15 Monitoring activity in closets, garages, and basements
Plastic storage bins $8-$25 each Replacing cardboard storage in spider-prone areas
Dehumidifier $150-$350 Basements or crawl-space-adjacent rooms with high humidity
Professional pest visit $100-$300 Heavy activity, recurring spiders, or suspected venomous species
Recurring pest plan About $40-$70 per monthly visit Ongoing prevention where insects and spiders are persistent

Durable exclusion work can range from under $100 in materials for basic caulking and weatherstripping to $150 to $500 or more for multiple screen repairs, vent covers, door seals, and utility penetrations. If rotten trim, door alignment, water damage, crawl-space drainage, or vapor-barrier work is involved, the project can move into several hundred or several thousand dollars because labor and repair scope dominate the cost.

Natural sprays are cheap but short-lived. The best return is usually physical: a tight door sweep, repaired screens, sealed penetrations, better lighting habits, dry storage, and a cleaner foundation perimeter.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY is a good fit when you are seeing occasional house spiders, webs in predictable corners, a few gaps around doors or windows, or spider activity tied to cluttered storage. A homeowner with a vacuum, gloves, flashlight, caulk gun, screen patch, and a free weekend can make real progress.

Hire a licensed pest professional when spiders keep appearing after cleaning and exclusion work, when you suspect black widows or brown recluse, when someone has bite symptoms, when activity is heavy in multiple rooms, or when the underlying insect problem is beyond basic housekeeping. Photograph suspicious spiders before disturbing them if you need identification. Use a clear container or a photo from a safe distance; do not handle them.

Hire a contractor or qualified handyman when the issue is really the building: rotten trim, failed door thresholds, damaged siding, missing vent covers, crawl-space moisture, poor drainage, loose basement windows, or large penetrations around utilities. A pest-control visit may reduce activity temporarily, but it will not rebuild a failed threshold or correct water against the foundation.

Venomous Spider Safety

Most spiders found in homes are not dangerous, but black widows and brown recluse spiders deserve caution. Wear gloves when moving firewood, stored boxes, lumber, tarps, and items kept in garages or sheds. Shake out gloves, boots, and clothing that have been stored in undisturbed areas. If a bite is suspected and symptoms develop, seek medical advice promptly.

Do not rely on folk identification alone. Lighting, age, markings, and crushed specimens can all mislead homeowners. A clear photo is often more useful than a damaged spider.

Common Mistakes That Keep Spiders Coming Back

The biggest mistake is treating visible spiders while leaving the conditions that attracted them. Spraying peppermint oil into a dusty garage corner without removing egg sacs, sealing the garage door gap, or reducing insects around the light is a short-term move.

Another mistake is over-sealing the wrong things. Do not caulk window weep holes, block soffit vents, restrict dryer vents, cover combustion air openings, or close crawl-space vents without understanding the system. Pest exclusion should tighten unwanted gaps while preserving drainage, ventilation, and mechanical safety.

Homeowners also underestimate cardboard. Cardboard boxes in damp storage areas create hiding places and attract insects. Switching to sealed plastic bins is not glamorous, but it works.

Finally, many people ignore exterior lighting. If your porch light draws insects every night and your door sweep has a gap, the house is inviting prey first and spiders second. Fix the insect pressure and the spider pressure usually drops.

A Maintenance Plan After the Spiders Are Gone

After the initial reset, keep the plan simple. Vacuum corners and storage areas monthly during active seasons. Check exterior doors and screens twice a year, especially after winter and after heavy use in summer. Walk the foundation at dusk a few times each season to look for lights attracting insects, new webs, torn screens, and gaps that have opened as materials moved.

Keep basement and crawl-space humidity on your radar. If readings climb above roughly 50% to 60% and stay there, investigate. Clean gutters, extend downspouts, maintain positive grading where possible, and keep stored materials off damp floors.

Use natural deterrents only where they make sense: cleaned entry points, thresholds, garage corners, and exterior areas protected from immediate rain. Reapply as needed, but do not let scent-based products replace physical repairs.

The durable natural solution is a tighter, drier, cleaner house with fewer insects around it. That is better for spider control, better for comfort, and better for the building.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest natural way to get rid of spiders indoors?

Vacuum spiders, webs, and egg sacs first, then remove clutter and seal the entry points you can see. A natural spray may help temporarily, but cleaning and exclusion create the fastest durable improvement.

Does peppermint oil really keep spiders away?

Peppermint oil may repel some spiders for a short time, but the scent fades and it does not fix the cause. Use it only after cleaning, sealing gaps, repairing screens, and reducing insect activity.

How small of a gap can spiders use to get inside?

A good inspection rule is 1/16 inch. If you can see a thin crack, daylight around a door, or a credit-card-edge gap, insects and spiders may be able to use it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does natural spider control cost?

A small DIY project commonly costs about $15 to $75 in materials. More durable exclusion work can run $150 to $500 or more in materials, while professional pest visits often fall around $100 to $300 in 2026.

When should I call a professional for spiders?

Call a licensed pest professional if spiders keep returning after exclusion work, activity is heavy, you suspect black widows or brown recluse, bite symptoms occur, or there is a larger insect infestation.

Can I seal every vent and crack to stop spiders?

No. Seal unwanted gaps, but do not block soffit vents, dryer vents, window weep holes, crawl-space ventilation, or combustion air openings. Those components protect the building and may be required by code.
