Household drain mixtures may help with routine maintenance, light residue, or odor, but the sources reviewed do not show that they reliably clear serious blockages. For an active obstruction, a plunger or carefully used drain snake works mechanically; stop if the blockage persists or you are unsure what is in the pipe.
Below are five source-grounded DIY approaches: four household mixtures and a plunger. They are not equally suited to every drain, and none should be treated as a proven cure for a severe clog.
First, identify the problem
A slow drain and a smelly drain are not necessarily the same problem. The City of Mesa says odor can come from rotting debris or hair in the P-trap, biofilm on the drainpipe, or a dry P-trap in a rarely used fixture. More ingredients may not solve those causes.
For accessible strainers or stoppers, remove debris and clean the components and pipe sides with soap, water, and a bottlebrush, then rinse. If a fixture is rarely used, periodically run water to keep its P-trap filled. These odor-care steps are described by the City of Mesa.

Safety before trying a drain treatment
- Do not add household ingredients to a drain that may contain commercial drain opener. Iowa State Extension warns against using its baking-soda-and-vinegar method after commercial opener has been used or while it remains in standing water. Rhode Island DEM warns vinegar may react with a commercial opener and create dangerous fumes.
- Follow the cleaner label and avoid adding another substance when chemical residue in the drain is unknown. If drain cleaner contacts someone or is swallowed, follow emergency guidance from MedlinePlus; do not try to counteract an ingestion with vinegar or lemon juice.
- Boiling-water advice is not universal. Rhode Island DEM cautions that its baking-soda-and-vinegar method is for metal plumbing and that excess boiling water can melt plastic pipes. Check the pipe material and choose a conservative flush if you are unsure.
- Do not force a snake around bends, especially in PVC. UF/IFAS cautions against excessive force when snaking PVC plumbing.
- If a garbage disposal is jammed, turn it fully off and disconnect power before attempting any disposal-specific procedure. Iowa State Extension emphasizes this electrical-safety step.
Five DIY approaches for minor drain problems
1. Baking soda and vinegar
Iowa State Extension describes this household recipe, and the City of Mesa lists the same quantities as an option for drain cleaning. It is commonly suggested, but that is not proof it can remove a serious blockage.
- Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into the drain.
- Add 1/2 cup white vinegar and cover the drain if possible.
- Wait a few minutes.
- Flush only with water appropriate for the plumbing material; do not assume boiling water is safe for plastic or unknown pipes.
2. Washing soda for routine maintenance
UF/IFAS recommends this as a monthly maintenance rinse, not as a remedy for a blocked pipe.
- Dissolve 1/2 cup washing soda in 2 cups boiling water.
- Flush the pipe with the mixture.
- Rinse with clean water.
Because this instruction uses boiling water, check pipe material first and do not use it if the plumbing may be plastic or you cannot verify it is suitable.

3. Baking soda, salt, and vinegar
UF/IFAS publishes this household mixture but does not establish it as a proven way to clear severe blockages.
Recommended Free Tools
- Combine 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup salt, and 1 cup white vinegar.
- Pour the mixture into the drain.
- Wait 15 minutes.
- Flush thoroughly with water only if the plumbing material can safely take the temperature used.
4. Salt and baking soda for a disposal-related suggestion
Iowa State Extension associates this suggestion with a garbage-disposal clog context. Do not assume it is suitable for every drain or pipe.
- Pour 1/2 cup salt and 1/2 cup baking soda into the drain.
- Add 6 cups boiling water only if the plumbing is suitable for it.
- Let the mixture sit overnight, then flush with water.
Do not put your hands into a disposal. If the disposal itself is jammed, use the manufacturer’s instructions and disconnect power first, or call a professional.

5. Use a plunger instead of adding another mixture
UF/IFAS lists a plunger as an option for unclogging drains. It acts mechanically rather than relying on a household mixture. Do not plunge if commercial drain opener may remain in the water, since splashing can expose you to corrosive cleaner.
- Check that no commercial drain opener or unknown chemical residue is present.
- Use a suitable plunger and form a seal over the drain opening.
- Plunge carefully. Stop if it does not help or if you are uncertain about the condition of the plumbing.
When to use a snake or call a plumber
UF/IFAS recommends a rubber plumber’s snake for a seriously clogged drain, with a warning not to apply too much force at bends in PVC. A snake is a mechanical next step, not a reason to force an obstruction deeper or risk damaging a pipe.

Consider professional help if a blockage is serious, persists after a cautious attempt, or you do not know what chemicals may be in the drain. The sources reviewed here do not establish a comprehensive symptom checklist or a universal threshold for calling a plumber, so use judgment and follow local plumbing advice. If you have used a commercial cleaner, tell the plumber what product was used and when.

| Approach | Source-grounded use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Baking soda and vinegar | Published household drain-cleaning suggestion | Not evidence of reliable performance on serious clogs |
| Washing soda and water | UF/IFAS monthly maintenance suggestion | Maintenance guidance, not a blocked-pipe remedy; check water temperature suitability |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does baking soda and vinegar unclog a drain?
It is a published household suggestion, but the reviewed sources do not establish that it reliably clears serious clogs. Treat it as a minor maintenance attempt, not a guaranteed fix.
What can I pour down a slow drain naturally?
The sources describe baking-soda mixtures and washing soda for limited household uses. First consider whether the issue is an obstruction that needs mechanical removal; do not add anything if commercial drain opener may remain in the pipe.
How do I get rid of a smelly drain?
Remove accessible debris and clean the strainer or stopper and pipe sides with soap, water, and a bottlebrush. The City of Mesa also notes that a dry P-trap in a rarely used sink or shower can let sewer gas into a room; periodically running water can keep the trap filled.

Can I use boiling water in my drain?
Not universally. Rhode Island DEM warns excess boiling water can melt plastic pipes and says its baking-soda-and-vinegar method is for metal plumbing. Check your pipe material and use a suitable water temperature.
When should I call a plumber for a clogged drain?
Seek professional help when the blockage is serious or persistent, a cautious mechanical attempt does not help, or you are unsure what is in the drain. Tell the plumber about any commercial cleaner used.
