In a 2014 feature, Make: describes the works as “dioramas of people’s lives inside sardine cans” and frames them as reflections on modular housing and the intimacy of living in compact, neighboring spaces.
What is Home Sweet Home?
Artist Nathalie Alony’s Home Sweet Home takes the familiar sardine can and turns it into a container for a miniature home scene. Make: presented the works as dioramas of people’s lives, bringing domestic space into an object associated with standardized packaging.
The title “tiny homes” can suggest small houses designed for people to live in. Here, it refers instead to miniature artworks: the cans contain representations of domestic life, not habitable dwellings.
How the work connects small homes and modular housing
The feature interprets the repeated cans as compact, adjacent domestic units—a visual echo of standardized apartments and the way people live close to one another. Its accompanying text describes “unnatural micro condominiums” and imagines different lives, stories, histories, and futures compressed into neighboring “little boxes” that people call home.

What the feature does—and does not—tell us
Andrew Salomone’s Make: feature, published May 18, 2014, is a short introduction to the artwork, not a catalogue or construction tutorial. It names the series and describes its central idea, but does not provide dimensions, scale, a count of the works, fabrication steps, or a complete materials list. Sardine cans are the only specific construction material established there.

That means the feature can support an interpretation of the work, but not a technical reconstruction. A person making a scene inspired by it would need to develop their own design and choose suitable miniature-diorama materials; those choices should not be attributed to Alony.
