NASM33537 is the National Aerospace Standard for standard assembly dimensions for inch-series helical-coil wire inserts in coarse- and fine-thread applications. It helps engineers define the prepared tapped hole, countersink, insert position, and related drawing requirements for an installed insert. It is not, by itself, a complete specification for insert materials, product qualification, or every installation procedure.
The current government status record identifies NASM33537 as active and reaffirmed on September 1, 2024. A commercial standards listing identifies the latest purchasable edition as AIA NASM33537 Revision 4, published July 31, 2025. Always verify the controlled edition required by the applicable drawing, contract, customer, or maintenance procedure before production work.

A helical-coil insert is not a solid bushing. It is made from formed wire with a shaped cross-section and installed in a specially prepared tapped parent hole. Once installed, the coil provides a nominal internal screw thread for a bolt, screw, or other threaded fastener.

NASM33537 addresses the dimensional and drawing framework needed to assemble that type of insert in an inch-threaded component. Depending on the application, the engineering definition may need to identify:
- the nominal internal Unified thread size;
- whether the thread is coarse or fine, such as UNC or UNF;
- the required insert engagement or length;
- the prepared-hole and countersink arrangement;
- the depth at which the insert is installed below, or in relation to, the component surface;
- whether the hole is blind or through;
- the insert’s free-running or self-locking function; and
- tang treatment, including whether the tang is retained, broken off, or avoided with a tangless insert system.
These details matter because the insert is an assembly inside a parent material, not simply a replacement bolt thread. The prepared hole, the insert, the installation tool, and the final fastener must all be compatible.
What the standard does not cover by itself
NASM33537 should not be treated as a universal helical-coil product, material, or process specification. It is primarily an assembly-dimension standard. Separate documents, purchase specifications, manufacturer instructions, and engineering approvals may be needed for:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- wire material, coating, plating, or corrosion resistance;
- insert strength, qualification, and environmental performance;
- locking-torque requirements;
- special aerospace or defense procurement controls;
- installation lubricants and process controls;
- inspection acceptance criteria beyond the applicable drawing or procedure;
- special materials such as composites, thin sections, high-temperature alloys, or brittle castings; and
- alternate insert families or nonstandard installation methods.
In other words, citing NASM33537 may establish how the hole and assembly are dimensioned, but it does not automatically approve any insert sold under a familiar brand name. The insert’s size, series, material, configuration, and procurement documentation still need to be verified.
Why use a helical-coil insert?
Helical-coil inserts are commonly considered when an inch-threaded hole has been stripped, worn, corroded, or damaged by over-torque. They are also used where the parent material needs a durable internal thread or where repeated servicing would otherwise damage the original tapped hole.

The repair replaces the damaged internal thread with a new thread formed by the installed coil. This can restore the nominal fastener size without simply moving to a larger bolt, provided the surrounding material, hole geometry, edge distance, engagement, and design loads are suitable.
An insert is not a cure for every damaged component. Cracks, severe distortion, inadequate wall thickness, insufficient edge distance, pulled-out material, or damage extending beyond the permitted repair area may require a different repair or engineering disposition. For load-bearing, safety-critical, aerospace, or contract-controlled work, follow the approved drawing and repair procedure rather than treating a consumer repair kit as an automatic authorization.

NASM33537 versus MS33537
MS33537 is the superseded predecessor designation. The cancellation notice identifies MS33537E, dated June 11, 1991, as canceled and superseded by NASM33537 on July 3, 2002. Therefore, a current drawing or specification should not casually call MS33537 the active standard. Older drawings, tooling records, and repair instructions may still contain the MS designation, so the applicable contract, revision history, and engineering authority should be checked before substitution. [CIT-c005]
The change from MS33537 to NASM33537 does not mean that every historical part or installation becomes unusable. It means that the document designation and controlling revision must be resolved. Do not assume that an old table, reproduced PDF, or inherited shop note contains the current dimensions or requirements.

Practical NASM33537 installation workflow
The following is a planning framework, not a substitute for the current standard, the insert manufacturer’s instructions, or an approved repair procedure. Exact drill sizes, STI tap dimensions, countersink dimensions, gaging limits, insert lengths, and tolerances must come from the controlled documents for the selected thread and application.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Identify the required thread. Confirm the nominal inch thread, pitch series, and fastener requirement. A UNC insert is not automatically suitable for a UNF hole, and a metric kit is not a substitute for an inch-series assembly.
- Assess the parent component. Determine whether the damage is limited to the tapped thread. Check for cracks, distortion, corrosion, inadequate section thickness, restricted access, and nearby features that could affect drilling or countersinking.
- Confirm the insert family. Select the required free-running or self-locking type, insert length or engagement, material, finish, and configuration. Confirm whether the design calls for a tang-equipped insert or a tangless family such as the referenced NAS1130 type.
- Obtain the governing dimensions. Use the current NASM33537 edition and the applicable insert or process documentation. Do not scale dimensions from an online reproduction or infer a drill size from the nominal fastener diameter.
- Prepare the damaged hole. The damaged thread is typically removed or corrected using the specified preparation method. The operation must leave the correct hole size, alignment, depth, and surface condition for the selected insert.
- Apply the specified countersink. NASA’s PRC-9008 process notes that the standard countersink affects how far below the surface the insert is set. If a different countersink is required, the engineering drawing must identify the alternate countersink and insert depth. [CIT-c004]
- Tap with the correct STI tap. A standard fastener tap is not necessarily the correct tap for a helical-coil insert. Use the insert-system tap specified for the thread and verify the resulting thread with the required gage.
- Clean and inspect the prepared hole. Remove chips and debris using the approved method. Confirm that the tapped hole and countersink meet the applicable drawing or process requirements before installing the insert.
- Install the insert to the specified depth. Use the correct mandrel or installing tool and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Avoid forcing the insert, stretching it, or setting it at an unapproved depth.
- Deal with the tang as required. A tang-equipped insert may require a specified break-off operation, especially in a blind hole. A tangless insert requires its compatible installation system. Do not improvise a tang-removal method where the drawing or procedure controls the process.
- Perform the final inspection. Check insert position, internal thread function, cleanliness, surface condition, and any required gaging or fastener-fit inspection. Record the repair if the quality system, maintenance procedure, or contract requires traceability.
Countersink and insert depth are not minor details
For a flush or near-flush installation, the countersink determines where the top coil begins relative to the component surface. That relationship affects the specified insert depth and the usable engagement of the installed fastener. A hole that is countersunk differently from the governing requirement may place the insert too high, too low, or at the wrong position for the drawing.
This is particularly important in blind holes, where the available depth, chip evacuation, tang removal, and bottom clearance must be considered together. Through holes may have different access and tang-treatment requirements. Public reproductions of older standards can help explain the terminology and drawing logic, but they should not be used as the authority for current production dimensions. [CIT-c006]
Buying checklist for an inch repair kit
A repair kit is a practical way to obtain several matched components, but the words Heli-Coil or thread repair do not by themselves prove suitability for a NASM33537 application. Before ordering, verify each of the following:
- Nominal thread: Match the exact inch thread size and pitch.
- Thread series: Confirm UNC, UNF, or the specified Unified series.
- Insert function: Choose free-running or self-locking as required.
- Insert length: Match the specified engagement and available parent-material depth.
- Insert configuration: Check tang-equipped versus tangless construction.
- Material and environment: Confirm compatibility with the parent material, temperature, corrosion exposure, and service conditions.
- Kit contents: Look for the correct STI tap, installation tool, inserts, instructions, and—where required—the proper drill, tang-break tool, gage, or extraction tool.
- Documentation: For controlled work, check manufacturer part numbers, material or finish information, certificates, and procurement requirements.
- Quantity and length mix: A small consumer kit may not contain the insert lengths or tooling required for production repair.
Buying shortcut: A Heli-Coil thread repair kit can be a sensible starting point for a damaged inch hole because typical kits combine inserts, a compatible tap, an installation tool, and instructions; some include a drill or tang-removal tool. Select one only after matching the exact Unified thread size, UNC/UNF series, insert length, locking or free-running requirement, and parent-material application. [CIT-c010][CIT-c011]
For recurring maintenance or shop use, a professional Heli-Coil kit may be more appropriate than a small general-purpose kit because professional sets can provide multiple insert lengths and additional tooling. The product still needs to be checked against the governing drawing and application; branding alone is not evidence of compliance.
When to buy individual tooling instead
If inserts are already available, the missing item may be the dedicated tooling rather than a complete kit. SAE AS59158 covers the relevant tool categories, including taps, thread plug gages, inserting tools, expanding or staking tools, tang break-off tools, extracting tools, and thread-repair kits. Use an individual STI tap when the existing tap is worn, damaged, the wrong size, or not actually intended for the selected insert system. An installation mandrel, gage, or extraction tool may also be needed for controlled work. The tap and gage must correspond to the exact thread and insert system; a generic tap selected only by bolt size is a common source of an unusable repair.

Use the controlled commercial edition for the actual technical tables and requirements. [CIT-c001]
Also check whether NASM33537 is merely referenced as a design convention or is made mandatory by a contract, engineering drawing, procurement specification, customer requirement, or maintenance procedure. National standards are generally voluntary until an applicable requirement incorporates them; once incorporated, the specified revision and associated documents become part of the work obligation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using MS33537 as though it were current: Treat it as the superseded predecessor and resolve the required NASM revision.
- Confusing NASM33537 with NASM8846: One primarily addresses assembly dimensions; the other relates to the insert product specification.
- Using a metric kit: NASM33537 is for inch-series applications. Metric assembly dimensions belong to a different standard family, including MA1567.
- Choosing by bolt diameter alone: Thread series, pitch, insert length, locking function, material, and tooling also matter.
- Assuming every branded kit complies: Verify part numbers and documentation for the intended application.
- Copying exact values from an old web PDF: Confirm current drill, tap, countersink, gaging, depth, and tolerance data in the controlled edition.
- Ignoring countersink and depth: These determine the installed position, especially in flush, blind, or restricted-access applications.
- Using a normal tap instead of an STI tap: The prepared thread must match the insert system.
- Installing an alternate insert without review: NASA’s process guidance notes that alternate part numbers may need special drawing instructions and advance materials-and-processes review. [CIT-c004]
Bottom line for contractors and maintenance teams
NASM33537 is the inch-series assembly-dimension reference for installing coarse- and fine-thread helical-coil inserts. It helps define the prepared hole and installed insert, but it does not replace the insert specification, tooling standard, manufacturer’s process instructions, or an approved repair procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is NASM33537 the same as MS33537?
No. MS33537 is the superseded predecessor designation. MS33537E was canceled and superseded by NASM33537 on July 3, 2002. Older drawings may still use the MS designation, so the controlling revision and contract requirements should be verified.
Does NASM33537 specify the helical-coil insert material?
Not by itself. NASM33537 primarily addresses standard assembly dimensions and drawing conventions. Insert material, finish, qualification, locking characteristics, and installation-process requirements may be controlled by NASM8846, manufacturer documentation, procurement specifications, or the engineering drawing.
Can I use a metric Heli-Coil kit for a NASM33537 repair?
No. NASM33537 covers inch-series coarse- and fine-thread applications. A metric repair requires the applicable metric standard and a kit matched to the metric thread.
What tools are normally needed for a NASM33537-style repair?
The work may require the correct drill or hole-preparation tool, an STI tap, a thread plug gage, an insert installation tool, and—depending on the insert and hole—a tang-break or extraction tool. The exact tooling must match the insert system and approved procedure.
The Bottom Line
NASM33537 defines how an inch-series helical-coil insert assembly is dimensioned—not every detail of the insert or repair process. Use the current controlled edition, match the insert and STI tooling to the exact UNC or UNF thread, and verify countersink, depth, gaging, and documentation requirements before production or aerospace work.
